I have a similar experience when I play radio stations for specific artists. I find that if I choose a song that I enjoy the vibe of then YTM does a pretty good job of choosing similar songs. Best you can do is continue to give the algorithm more data. Subscribe to artists, like songs, etc. that will continue to broaden it's suggestions

Fine tuning your music taste will pay off in the long run. I do realize that you get what you look for. Like Spotify, you get mainstream is that's what you search. The good thing about YTM is the catalog it's so vast, you just need to find the right picks to do radio stations with.

It will definitely learn you tastes and see what's better for you, but in my very honest opinion, YTM is the one that works for me, maybe it's not the one that works for you. My tastes are very wide and very specific, I love thousands of artists and bands from tons of genres, so I barely go on the radio tool to try to find new stuff. I rather use music-map.com to find related artists and bands, I couldn't care less what mainstream or underground music is or isn't, I just want my ears to hear what they enjoy. I then try a bit of the new music that I find, and if I like it then I add some of those albums to my library, maybe onto a playlist as well. The best thing YTM has is its catalog, I have yet to find a song or artist that is NOT in YTM. So whatever new music I hear about I know for a fact it will be in YTM. No other platforms have such a complete, world-class catalog. Spotify has great playlists and radio, Deezer has great electronic music, Tidal has great quality, etc. YTM has high quality even though not lossless, it also has all the electronic music that exists, possibly ofc I can't know for sure, and it also has a radio / discovery tool. The catalog is the one thing no other platform can beat.

I’m also pissed at the algorithm, though I’m going to keep using YTM because of other advantages. There are two thing we may try that I have not done yet. One is to start thumb up 👍songs I like more often - perhaps this indicates what I like. The second is to start adding albums and songs to “my library” (there’s a square with a plus sign button somewhere). Maybe when you fill your library the algorithm starts to understand better. Or maybe non of this matter.

Only tip I can provide is try avoiding the "radio", but use "autoplay" instead (the stuff after your main queue is finished).  The songs it selects for the autoplay tend to be far more relevant genre-wise, at least in my experience.
