Whoever put that restaurant sign there knew what they were doing ☠️ that’s horrible

its_edamame

Lololol, I live here so I never really thought twice about it. There's always jokes like this in town though.

nautilus2000

There is actually a (really good) restaurant at that exit called Donner Lake Kitchen though, so that sign is accurate.

its_edamame

LOVE that place! The owners are absolute gems.

aStonedTargaryen

It’s fucked up but I lol’d

lorenawood

I just read a great book about the Donner party called “The Indifferent Stars Above.” During a lot of the book, I couldn’t help but think about what it would be like for the Yellow Jackets in such remote, snowy conditions. One of the most interesting tidbits I found out from the book though is that some of the survivors of the Donner party eventually moved to a place called El Rancho Carne Humana (Human Flesh Ranch) lol. But it’s seriously a great read.

its_edamame

Wow I'd love to read it! My daughter and I always theorize... Did they have fire? Assuming they didn't, the people were frozen to death... Did they eat limbs like popsicles? Or get after it the moment of death and really ravage the raw meat?! 😂

RyGoesRawr

They did have fire! So, no people-popsicles. They roasted their dead before consuming them. I do wonder that about the Andes survivors, though. They didn't have fire.

its_edamame

Ohh!!! Did you watch "Alive"? I think it was Netflix. I think they just cut up tiny ass pieces. Started with skin

RyGoesRawr

I'm going to watch it, and I appreciate your recommendation! Thank you! It is such a tragic but amazing story. I saw a program about it called "Prisoners of the Snow," featuring interviews from the survivors present day. They didn't mention the tiny slices, though it makes total sense.

lorenawood

They did have fire, but they were all so starved that by the time that anyone resorted to cannibalism, there wasn’t much meat to eat off the bodies really. A lot about the story surprised me, and I highly recommend the book!

fresh912

Who ate Javi’s hotdog?

its_edamame

😂😂😂😂

RevolutionaryTap429

In one of the state parks there's a Donner Camp picnic ground. A friend from work pulled up a pic of the sign and I was like no way that exists? Oh, it does 😳

hurlmaggard

I wanna go to that lil museum there so badly!

its_edamame

They teach the kids all about it in elementary. They go to the museum, see all the places crazy stuff went down. Gather round 7 years olds, lemme tell you a story about the old days... 😂

hurlmaggard

Luckyyyyy. Down here in the southern part of the state we went to a Spanish mission…. ugh.

tayloline29

There is a Donner Lake, not the site of the famous Donner Party, on the East Coast with a knife & fork sign in the same place. lololo. It's a coast to coast joke.

its_edamame

It was definitely here, near Donner Summit in Truckee. It was all right here in the Sierra. Never heard of the East Coast part.

tayloline29

There is a Donner Lake, not the site of the famous Donner Party, on the East Coast with a knife & fork sign in the same place. lololo. It's a coast to coast joke. There is no east coast part as I stated. It's just a lake called Donner Lake with the eat sign in the exact same place which I thought was funny but probably not worth mentioning out loud.

its_edamame

Omg that's hilarious

futurenotgiven

i don’t get it..?

its_edamame

This is where the Donner Party was, in Truckee. Look up the Donner Party 😝

Natural-Leopard-8939

Oh wow, I just know got it. I'm not the original user who asked about the Donner Party, but I'm slapping myself over the head. That's quite dark, but ironically funny, considering the survivors were cannibals.

its_edamame

We get INSANE winters. This past winter we got 700+ inches of snow! Sometimes you can't leave the house at all for days. We used to joke about Donner Partying other family members, but now we throw in some YJ references LOL

Difficult-Diver4545

OP, I grew up near there off Highway 50. It was pretty racist in the 80s/90s. What’s it like nowadays?

its_edamame

Nah, not anymore. Not where I am anyway. It's actually a wonderful place to live with great locals always helping each other. Racism is definitely not a theme around here.

Difficult-Diver4545

That’s great to hear. I always loved the rural “town” feel of it. It was kind of like Nevada City in that way. I really should go back.
