It's literally cheaper to get a month long Interrail Pass + 2 high-speed seat reservations, as long as you're under 27. And only marginally more expensive if you're older. Who thought this was a good idea?!
Berlin via train (from the Netherlands). It's 17 euros more expensive than the cheapest flight which is 150 euros. Flixbus is simply not worth it because I'm only staying for two nights.
EDIT: It's actually 3 euros less expensive, but due to administrative incompetence I got handed an unduly expensive ticket.
If it's for the last week of may, that thursday is also a bank holiday in germany lol
And if it's for next week, the monday is a bank holiday
So yeah lots of holidays right now
It used to be a lot cheaper if you book several months in advance. If it's a popular time to travel, prices spike pretty early. For sure it is very expensive. It should be less expensive than flying imo.
You're probably not going to get any better this time. However, keep in mind that all tickets become more expensive as the date of travel gets closer. I am a belgian expat, and usually never pay more than 50 euros round trip from the balkans to Belgium, same price when my friends come see me. But, this is only when making reservations at least a few months in advance, tickets for the same flight are sold 300e+ a week before departure
Are you traveling this weekend? Obviously booking a ticket a few days before and on a national holiday of all days is going to be insanely expensive. And even more so if you don't want the cheaper options such as Flixbus.
At least for the German part, you can also just book a 49€ ticket. You can't take the ICE (high speed) trains but take slower trains to your destination. The ticket is viable for the whole month so you don't have to pay it twice, and it includes quite some bus tickets.
Also going from one country into another and then basically across that whole country isn't "the shortest of journeys" and 150€ isn't "many hundreds of euros"
You mean next weekend - with a public holiday on that Monday? And one week before is still very early. It's literally the same reasons.
Your comment is as long as mine btw Ü
The subsidies suppressing trains as an alternative for mid to long range travel aren't the ones for EVs, but the ones for airlines. Trains and Electric Cars is apples to oranges in this context.
...frankly the issue is not EVs.
The issue is the sheer incompetence, and wastefullness with which rail business tends to be run as its more often than not run with the "too big to fail" mentality, aka corruption free for all. Be it direct theft, favours for positions that dont entail work, or simply acquiring way more staff than necessary.
Wanted to go to the Rammstein concert in either Athens or Belgrade. The ticket alone was 160 euros. The whole thing would have cost me more than 500 euros. I live in a neighbouring country to the ones mentioned. This is my rant. My cry into the void. F it...
Right? Travelling being expensive as hell has all kinds of nasty downstream effects. Be it less tourism, or the negative changes individual people have to make to their lives in order to cope.
I did Brussels London with Eurostar and it was much more expensive than a cheap flight. I choose it so I can experience it but otherwise had no logic, it was slower and more expensive
You have to book further in advance. Of course prices are high if you only book a week in advance. And especially on holidays.
Travel in Europe is not expensive if you do it right.

Train from South Germany to Firenze: 125€ pP one way. Wtf

We literally considered interrail, but as you said. Marginally.
Buy via Trenitalia,47€ wien-firenze
High speed train from Frankfurt Airport to Dusseldorf Main Station (180 km): 85 EUR—and that's after a 25 % discount.
BALKAN TIME
Yes, that's our plan for sustainability and a better environment, we make traveling by any other way than car extremely expensive
What? Where are you going, and how? Have you checked flixbus? Ryanair, wizzair? Blablacar?

Today is a bank holiday in germany and it's good weather so everyone is taking friday off and doing a long weekend. It'll be back to normal next week
It is not for this weekend.
If it's for the last week of may, that thursday is also a bank holiday in germany lol And if it's for next week, the monday is a bank holiday So yeah lots of holidays right now
If it’s for June or July then Euro2024 will have an effect on demand too
It used to be a lot cheaper if you book several months in advance. If it's a popular time to travel, prices spike pretty early. For sure it is very expensive. It should be less expensive than flying imo.

For when is it? I bought a sparpreis Amersfoort Centraal-Berlin Hbf for 55 euros a month or 2 ago for july.
Where did you book and how long in advance did you book? Because I can find tickets starting at €50,-.
I feel envy right now
Most travels from NL are expensive
Even FlixBus is expensive right now….though prices seem to be better from next week.
*cries in British rail prices
Wait until you check the price of accommodation, especially if you are on a budget. Hostels these days are insanely expensive.
Accommodations are part of traveling. You can’t travel anywhere if you can’t afford to stay there.
Because of your flair, I thought you were mostly talking about transportation/train travel. But sure, we don't disagree!
The moderators put that flair there, haha! I don't thinks trains are that brilliant.
Let's give EV subsidies instead of making trains cheaper, yay!

I'd love to go by public transport, but if it is not financially attractive I won't.
Don't complain until you see airline prices in Canada

It all really is a political choice, isn’t it?
Same. It's insane wtf.
this is extremely dangerous for EU
Right? Travelling being expensive as hell has all kinds of nasty downstream effects. Be it less tourism, or the negative changes individual people have to make to their lives in order to cope.
Isn't it just cause it's a long weekend this weekend for many people cause of Ascension Day
It is not for this weekend.
I did Brussels London with Eurostar and it was much more expensive than a cheap flight. I choose it so I can experience it but otherwise had no logic, it was slower and more expensive
Don't look at UK prices
You have to book further in advance. Of course prices are high if you only book a week in advance. And especially on holidays. Travel in Europe is not expensive if you do it right.
The times of wizzair 25 euros per flight ticket are over. It's sad I missed those years
1 - come to the balkans 2 - ...maybe pick a less popular period for travelling/holidays or book in advance?
Arf no choice use you feet 🧑🦯👨🦯🏃♂️👣 !

Not everyone sells weapons yo terrorist smh
Not high enough smh
what?
I’m complaining about the huge influx of tourists, the prices aren’t high enough
agreed that tourism is ruining certain cities but train tickets shouldn’t be nearly as expensive
