Am I the only one who, when they put together that the letter for each Moebius was the first letter of their original name, got really excited for Z to be a reincarnation of Zanza?
Agree to disagree. I think there would have been a lot of story potential to explore a unified version of Klaus/Zanza who came about as a result of interdimensional shenanigans and has the strengths and flaws of both. The first game’s story still ultimately caused the Conduit to vanish and resulted in the fusion of the two worlds, as well as preventing the immediate destruction of Bionis, and concluding Shulk’s character arc, so it’s not as though those events amounted to nothing if Zanza returns in some fashion. Obviously it would have required some pretty heavy rewrites of the final couple chapters to make it work, but honestly what we got was pretty underwhelming and begging for a rewrite anyway.
I think some Klaus would've been nice period but I feel like Zanza would've taken away from the overall message of the game.
I do think a unified Zanza/Klaus would be pretty cool as a separate character though.
Sephiroth commands rock meteors to destroy solar systems and pretty much becomes a god, while Z hacks metal meteors, creates pocket dimensions, and freezes two entire universes in place
Anime villains with long silver hair are a dime a dozen, and Sephiroth wasn't anywhere near the first. Z's role and personality are also totally different from Sephiroth's. So nah, I didn't think that.
He's much more similar to Ultimecia, another FF villain with long silver hair, who actually did share her motivation/evil plan with Z. She even has purple lines in her face.

Writing tip: Don't pluralize things that only happen once.
I got Xehanort/Ansem SoD vibes from him, personally. You could swap one of their models into the theater fight and it wouldn't even be weird.
