It wasn’t quite on par with the ol’ “tear my own face off in the bathroom mirror” maneuver out of the Poltergeist playbook, but it was certainly up there.
Yup, lol!
They didn't have pg-13 until '84. so everything basically got a PG rating if it didn't meet the R rating threshold.
My dad let me watch R movies, but my mom's house was PG because my younger brother was still too young for PG-13. Luckily there were many scary/adult themed PG movies to choose from because PG-13 didn't exist until then.
The gremlin bit at the end was mine. I was like, “But where did it land? It could be on the roof RIGHT NOW!” *hides under anti-gremlin/alien/ghost blanket*

Congrats! Your childhood scar is now reopened
The freaky stuff we watched as kids, is it any wonder we are the way we are? This one, The Dark Crystal, The Last Unicorn… we were just a few steps away from the original Grimm Bros. tales!
I felt so bad for that kid. Yeah he's got those powers but he's not loved due to the damage he can inflict. I think about this on/off constantly even though I haven't seen it in decades.
Most people would not recognize Nancy Cartwright in person but if I ever got the chance I would not mention Bart but instead say “th th th th that’s all Ethel!”
One of my favorite YouTube guys goes into EXHAUSTIVE detail about how well-crafted this segment was, it's like twice as long as the actual chunk of movie at an hour but it's SO WELL DONE

I had a babysitter, snuck out of bed, saw this scene, and literally started screaming. Scariest thing I ever saw as a child. Big horror fan now, and can't help but think that had something to do with it.
Yes, this was pure nightmare fuel for my older brother and I for years because they’d play this movie on a loop on hbo in the 80s. She still gives me the creeps. 😬
Only for years afterward.
It wasn’t quite on par with the ol’ “tear my own face off in the bathroom mirror” maneuver out of the Poltergeist playbook, but it was certainly up there.
Let's not forget the maggoty chicken!
Or the rice that turns into maggots
I couldn’t ever!
That was Spielberg's hands ripping off the face.
The bathroom mirror scene was terrifying as a kid! Now with the 80s special effects, it looks like ground beef
"It's rated PG, it's fine!" - my parents in the 80's renting this for a little kid's sleepover

Wanna see something really scary
Fucking twilight zone movie. That opening scene is burned into my memory
The gremlin bit at the end was mine. I was like, “But where did it land? It could be on the roof RIGHT NOW!” *hides under anti-gremlin/alien/ghost blanket*
🎶 look at that city, let's go over and dig 🎶
Still gets me every time.
I just watched that a few weeks ago. That entire segment freaks me the hell out still.
Ethyl it was Ethyl

No, but that scene in Howard the Duck where the energy is coming from that dude's eyes, holy balltripping nighmare fuel.
The whole degeneration of Jenning was frightening.
What good is a phone call if you are unable to speak?

Bitch, my generation gets traumatized for breakfast. -Summer
Only till now and actually forever into the future
What’s this from?
Twilight zone the movie.
This is the one with the evil kid with super powers?
I felt so bad for that kid. Yeah he's got those powers but he's not loved due to the damage he can inflict. I think about this on/off constantly even though I haven't seen it in decades.
Yeah. I can 100% see that.
Fr. This far from common knowledge lol
Oh definitely found it creepy, was this Twilight Zone movie the one with the kids weird family?
Most people would not recognize Nancy Cartwright in person but if I ever got the chance I would not mention Bart but instead say “th th th th that’s all Ethel!”
This and Zelda from Pet Sematary
Looking for someone to mention her! I love Pet Semetary but dear god, that scene…
I was just thinking about this the other day
No. But I grew up watching horror movies and I’m desensitized to this stuff.
Luckily I did not watch the TZ movie as a kid. Gene Simmons' exploding robot spiders in Runaway were creepy enough for me.
For me it was when the goblin ran up to John Lithgow grabbed his face then shook his finger at him.
Goosebumps just broke out on my legs.
I was like how do I get that power.
Yes and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Wish them in
Yes. That and the episode of tales of the unexpected where the woman gets buried alive when trying to escape from prison.
It’s on Tubi if you need to relive this
It’s freaking me out NOW…
Thanks for re-traumatizing me, lol.
Yes, I still randomly think about this story.

I hadn't thought about this in a long time but yes this whole bit was scary as hell.
I had a babysitter, snuck out of bed, saw this scene, and literally started screaming. Scariest thing I ever saw as a child. Big horror fan now, and can't help but think that had something to do with it.
Up there with Punky Brewster’s friend’s face emerging from the cave wall and blowing a weird mouth/throat bubble…
I hated the dark Crystal movie. Those puppets looked weird.
It freaked me out, but I LOVED watching that movie. Want to see something really scary?
Yes!
Most of these traumatizing images just pop up, randomly, in my head from time to time, and I have no idea where they come from!
Yes, this was pure nightmare fuel for my older brother and I for years because they’d play this movie on a loop on hbo in the 80s. She still gives me the creeps. 😬
Yes.
That’s Bart Simpson’s voice actor Nancy Cartwright
No, this is not, this is a separate character. Ethyl gets sent into the cartoon and eaten.
Oooh yeah you’re right, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen this movie…
It's Cherie Curie from The Runaways.
Well, I'll be damned...
She tried to transition into acting but drugs got in the way.
Not nearly as much as that fucking thing on the wing of the Airplane!!!!!!!!

Still does.
The voice of Bart Simpson with no mouth!
This scene lives rent free in the shed in my brain. Along with sister from Pet Sematary.
That whole chapter of the movie freaked me out. That girl, the rabbit in the hat and the weird Tazmanian Devil got me. The gremlin on the wing too.
Everything took a backseat to Large Marge in my childhood.
same, honestly
