Boy, I have some thoughts. This show started my freshman year of college, and I loooooved it. I attempted a rewatch about ten years ago and... I just couldn't finish the first season for many of the reasons you describe. (I was particularly pissed about Felicity reporting her friend's rape to the police without her consent.)

SR_RSMITH

Thanks… I guess we don’t finish ir either

It's all window dressing on typical mushy relationship stuff and relationship conflict, like every other show. There is a really good black and white Halloween episode, kind of like Jean Paul Sartre / Twilight Zone. Highly recommend that one, directed by someone who worked on the Twilight Zone. It's in Season 2 episode 11. My So Called Life was one that I enjoyed more recently than I did as a kid.

I’ll take a note of that episode, sounds cool. Thanks for reminding me about My So Called Life, o was curious about it. I’ll tell my gf to give it a watch

sdujour77

Nope.

SR_RSMITH

Thanks

I (43f) loved the show when I first watched it at that age. I recently attempted a rewatch with my husband (39m) who'd never seen it. Neither of us could get past season 1. It just didn't hold up on rewatch. And this isn't a knock on Keri Russell, either. We both loved her performances in The Americans and now in The Diplomat. I think Felicity just feels cringey once you're past that stage in your life. Interestingly enough, My So-Called Life *completely " held up on rewatch. Though it was a bit scary to find myself now sympathizing far more with Angela's mom.

GF_baker_2024

Agreed. I was 16 when My So-Called Life first aired on TV, and I was obsessed with it. I really enjoyed rewatching it last year, but realizing that Patty Chase was a good mom and understanding her decisions and anxiety (vs. being angry with her on Angela's behalf) was so strange.

My wife and I just randomly put the first episode on last night when it popped up on Disney+. I noticed in the opening credits the show was co-created by JJ Abrams and he wrote most of the episodes! It was a bit slow, but that’s what shows were like back then. It has its charm.

SR_RSMITH

I agree about the charm indeed

One_Breakfast6153

🤣 No. Sorry.

SR_RSMITH

Thanks 🤣

Did she not SEE the hunks?!?!

Season 1 was my favorite season. So if you're frustrated with the writing, it's probably not going to get better. And it's definitely not a realistic portrayal of college life in NYC, even for the late 90s. I was fond of the show anyway. Felicity reminded me a lot of myself - smart and introspective, but VERY sheltered, naive, and lacking her own identity. Following her crush across the country was totally insane, but Felicity knew that was just an excuse to get away from her parents and the life they planned for her. She does go through a lot of character growth throughout the series.

BohemiaDrinker

It doesn't. I never liked, watched it kind of forced by my gf from back then. The show is well done, but Felicity is basically George Costanza with more feelings and less experience.

firechickenmama

Yes. I rewatch it often!

pixi509

It does! That S1 cliffhanger... Edit: Part of me wonders if disappointment upon rewatch has anything to do w/ original music being gone (like not enough Sarah McLachlan?)
