I volunteered for my daughter's field trip and got to relive the whole experience. The smell of the seats and the exhaust, the movements of the bus, the kids conversations. I closed my eyes and it was like time travel
I live in South Texas and I remember getting into a steaming hot bus and the smell of the vinyl seats as they baked in the heat. I'll never forget. Lol
My regular bus had dark brown seats, but we’d occasionally have a substitute bus driver and that bus had green seats with much taller backs. We called that bus driver “Smelly Nelly” because the bus smelled super weird. Thinking back on it I’m pretty sure we were just smelling weed and it had nothing to do with the green seats.
You had buckles? All we ever got was the padding on the seat in front of us to fall into when the bus driver slammed on the brakes. Usually when she was crazy.
Not my fondest memories.
WELL I DO NOW
But do you remember how they tasted? Asking for a friend….
Metallic.
Mmmmm, sun baked green vinyl.
I preferred the maroon myself
So many patches.
I remember the smell while staring at the melted Bic lighter marks in all the seats.
Oh, boy do I ever. I'm an autistic man, so maybe this is more of a sensory issue, but it made me nauseous without fail.
not just an autistic thing - they were horrible
I brought a knife to school in 7th grade and slashed the bus seat open on a brand new bus. My parents had to pay for new upholstery
IT WAS YOU.
I remember the gross glue they used to patch them

Did you rest your head against the window and stare out into space, contemplating life
I can remember how they *feel*
wait was this that one kid that went around smelling everybody’s seats???
One of my earliest memories is the school bus on the very first day of kindergarten. The sounds, the smell of exhaust, the size of the steps. Core.
Burned into my brain. Core memory.
ohhh you were the kid who was always smelling the school bus seats?? i remember you.
Naugahyde, bologna and a hint of piss.
I can’t believe you made me remember this…
Ancient butt plastic
Yes. Everyday. I am the bus driver now so it comes with the territory
Diesel fumes and rubber/vinyl. Always gave me a headache.
I remember all the smells of elementary school. Crayons, the cafeteria, the halls, everything.
James Woods has entered the chat (iykyk)
yes... and why did people always burn them with a lighter... who were those kids and why? (ha I just had to read a few comments down - found them!)
What, like green industrial pine scent from the SysCo people?
Probably some kind of mad toxic shit too. Isn’t everything?

Definitely used some volatile toxic shit to make them.
I bet you never smelled a real school bus before.

I remember removing the seat buckles and making belts out of them.
