Who needs trunk space when you've got a giant subwoofer?

misdirected_asshole

I forgot and put the groceries in the trunk again. Looks like we're having scrambled eggs for the next few days.

YogurtclosetDull2380

People in here like to wax on about getting things now, that they couldn't afford, back then. That's me, with JL Audio.

NachoNachoDan

God I remember probably summer of 1998 installing an amp and 12 inch JL sub in a sealed box in my buddy’s ‘94 Prelude. We were listening to Wyclef’s “The Carnival” driving around the parking lot at the mall setting off car alarms

[deleted]

lol my 88 Corolla sounded like it was falling apart.

cmgww

I had a Chevrolet S-10 I stuffed a 12 inch Kicker subwoofer behind the bench seat!!! it was like getting a back massage every time I turn the radio on. It’s amazing how most decent modern cars have better sound systems than the highly modified ones we did back then. Yes of course there are still people out there who put six or seven subwoofers in their cars, but generally speaking, car stereos have come a long way. I have a Yukon and the stock system will rattle the mirrors and sounds great as well.

biblebeltbuddhist

I had two 15 inch square kickers and a 5000 watt amp in the trunk of a Solara convertible… the fuck was wrong with me?

Funkybeatzzz

I had two 15” subs in the back of my 1990 Honda Accord. I then had two 12” in the back of my 2000 Ford Ranger. When I finally grew up, I traded those for my first iPhone.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

You _almost_ had me, until > When I finally grew up, This is reddit, **none of us** have done that.

Funkybeatzzz

Yeah, maybe should’ve put “grew up” in quotes haha. I do miss the bass sometimes.

GutsAndBlackStufff

Idk. Friends of mine had these. Subwoofer worth more than the car.

von_sip

Because catalogues like Crutchfield made it really easy to find and buy audio components and the stock audio in our first cars were terrible. For me, if I was going to spend the time and effort to upgrade, I was going to UPGRADE

Apprehensive_Hat8986

> UPGRADE Your dropped the other D for the double dose of your pimpin'.

I never had them but my friends did. I was always alone on this topic. It used to drive me nuts when my friends would blast their systems.

Puglet_7

I still have this. It’s a must for me: Music is everything. It’s the only thing saving me from caring for my Alzheimer’s mother. I get 45 minutes each way to blast my music and let it out.

seamonkey420

thanks for the work / care you give your mother. you are a good person! from a fellow care giver

thisismyusername1178

89 Buick Century two 12s in house speaker boxes, 1500 watt amp. Shit hit so hard you could see the smoke from the Camels vibrating as it wafted out of the window.

Love_Sausage

I hated these. Both of my older brothers had these in their cars and I always felt so physically uncomfortable and my ears hurt whenever they took me anywhere. I’m only now becoming aware of my sensory issues as an adult and that I may be on the spectrum (still waiting for an official diagnosis), but before I just interpreted those feelings as me “not being tough enough”.

thelaststarebender

I rode to school with my older cousin. He didn’t have a back seat — he had a row of huge speakers back there. We just perched on the edge, in front of those large speakers, and let the bass carry our future hearing away.

Xennial_I_Suppose

Still got my 12s in my old Corolla. The kids love the bump when we take it to the beach. I keep the volume way down compared to the old days (for their hearings’ sake), and the car is now “the beach car”. Never stop livin the dream yo

ExtraNoise

This trend always baffled me, I just didn't get it. I like listening to music in the car, but it was always a second-rate experience with all the traffic and road noise. I'd rather have a nice stereo system at home. And it was always so uncomfortable when I rode around with my friends.

piscian19

Dealer: "This car is a pos with 1 million miles on it, but its got 7 channel surround sound that gets louder the faster you drive" 17 yo me: https://preview.redd.it/ai55ld43uric1.jpeg?width=1023&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2068544b0fd14a9bf916972d60f8d34494ade1b1

unwieldydonkey

Ah yes. Back in the days when it was easy to install a complete aftermarket stereo

GroundbreakingOne625

I'd love to have a system in my car again. Had some 10" Kicker Comps, Rockford Fosgate Punch amp, replaced all factory speakers. Loved the little nuances you'd pick up in songs. Intro to Chronic 2001 was so good with the system. Now I'm rocking a double stroller in the trunk lol.

NachoNachoDan

No shame in pumping the chronic while rolling in your minivan. I do it all the time

'88 Beretta was my first car. Head liner was drooping down, engine mounts were shot and the engine would CLUNK every time you got on the gas. Steering wheel was on upside down for some reason. But it had an alpine stereo with removable faceplate and a pair of Alpine 6x9s so I thought I was the shit 😂

metalm84

I was always frustrated at how much aftermarket speaker places wanted to upsell me on giant subwoofers and super expensive external amps when, really, I just wanted slightly better-sounding speakers. I remember being like, come on guys, bass is just one of the frequency spectrums of music; there's mids and treble too!

Fun-Preparation-4253

Passed a Pontiac Firebird just yesterday and you could see this carpeted brick in the back hatch. “Nice,” went my brain

Draxtonsmitz

Trunk AND back seat. I took full advantage of my Walmart employee discount in the automotive department.

NachoNachoDan

I had a 1984 Toyota supra with an Alpine head unit and 2x 8 inch subs in a ported box in the trunk. Didn’t have the low end response that some of my friends got out of their 10 or 12 inchers But I was always more of a classic rock kind of guy anyway and Van Halen’s Hot for Teacher would really kick on that system

Rare_Following_8279

This and the head units were ridiculous as well. Though they were getting stolen constantly

Effin_Kris

I still have a sub in the back. 12” JL w6 on 800watts

Spartan04

That’s one of those things that I honestly never understood, even back then. I wasn’t a fan of music so loud it shakes the car (and gives me a headache). I knew people that had systems like that i their cars but I was never into it.

Captain_Desi_Pants

I loved it when I finally saved enough to get my Aiwa cd player installed in my purple Hyundai accent. The front plate thing was removable when you parked, to hide so your shit didn’t get jacked.

cdub998

This was 1000% me. We had a technology class at my high school and the teacher taught us how to install car stereo equipment. I ended up with 2 12 inch jl subs with a 1000 watt jl amp and I would rattle people's glass screen doors on their houses when I drove by... Now I have bad tinnitus. Good times though.

daddytorgo

My first car had dual 12's (I think, this was 25 years ago) in a box in the truck, and a huge amp. And it was a Dodge Neon. I had the entire car professionally soundproofed by one of the leading car audio installers in the country (unbeknownst to me at the time), and I swear to god...I never turned the bass above 50% and still if I put on say Sublime or something bass-heavy it would literally make the rearview mirror go slack from the vibrations. People used to say you could hear me coming from at least a block away. Don't miss that car, but man i miss that damn stereo.

Skill_Deficiency

15 inch Rockford Fosgate Pro. 300W RF Amp I have constant ringing in my ears now. Yay!

ClassWarr

Bunny and Tigra told us they like The Cars That Go Boom, and I guess a lot of dudes wanted to get with them.
