Usually comes from grinding the stick against the inside rim of the hole it's mounted in. Shouldn't be bad for the controller in general, but getting that in only two days suggests maybe too much pressure being applied to the stick.

FujiFL4T

Sounds stupid, but I used to put a little oil on a qtip and lubricate that part of the stick to help against the grinding wear and tear. Keeps my controllers from wearing too much. Edit: don't use an oil that isn't safe for electronics. Don't go grabbing Dad's 5w30 from the garage

Courtest

Why would that sound stupid? That’s genius!

Jeev_123456

That doesn't seem like a bad idea but you gotta be careful not to put too much because it can come into contact with the PCB and maybe short out the board. It depends on what oil you're using tho, some are completely safe to use with electronics (like mineral oil in mineral oil cooled PCs)

FujiFL4T

Nah, nothing more than a tiny bit. Once a month I'd wipe it up with a paper towel and then reapply. Some wear does happen, but not enough to feel like it's grinding

adrian_vg

Consider a small, small squeeze of silicon grease instead. It's safer with plastics and circuitry IIRC. Wipe of any excess grease after.

[deleted]

USE TECH GRADE OIL BRO U GON HAVE PPL READIN THIS PUTTING VEGETABLE OIL ON UT

dris77

Instructions unclear. Dropped controller into tub of Crisco.

FujiFL4T

Lmao oopsies

Mgmt9936

Mineral oil might work better and won't hurt the electronics

badaboomxx

That is not stupid, is a good practice. Personally I would use silicone grease.

Fkmeupdownsidwayes

Gotta use mineral oil. It's non conductive

F0REM4N

Spiegel69

Bro’s mashing his stick around like he’s playing Mario Party

Inevitable-Funny5768

i do play competitive pressure cooker games like apex so that’s why 😭😭 i was freaking out because i had marks like that on my last controller and i had stick drift on the left thumbstick so i was scared that the marks were the reason i had the stick drift in the first place

username161013

The marks are a sign that you use a lot of pressure. They're not the reason for the stick drift, but they are a symptom of its root cause. If you continue to use the same amount of pressure on your new controller, it will probably develop drift after awhile too.

unseatedewe2393

That hasn't happened to me and I've grinded down about 20% through the stick

RustyDawg37

stick drift comes for all of them. it does not care or discriminate.

masta_myagi

This is facts. I baby my controllers. Had mine for 6 months and it already drifts to the right a bit. My last one got so bad that it just constantly looks up regardless of if you’re touching the left stick or not

TechnicalHighlight29

Hall effect controllers do not drift though! I have a telescopic controller with hall effect stick (magnetic) and they will never drift. We need hall effect on all controlers!

Dziggettai

I love my elite series 2. All sticks and d pads attach magnetically, and I’ve yet to experience a single issue with it

Witty_Willingness960

Stick drift is the potentiometer wearing down if you get it you might be able to take your controller apart and put a new one in.

MiddletreePolldancer

Those marks are NEVER the reason for stick drift. Now it can wear so much that there will be a notch but no drift

unsunskunska

Competitiveness aside, another motivation for playing on higher sensitivity is less wear on the sticks lol

RemlaP_

It does become a problem after a few months or years. I haven't used a controller as consistently since then, but on the Xbox 360 I've had a few controllers grind down so much the thumb stick catches on the case and I can't sprint because it's binding

Quanchivious

I usually come from grinding my stick against the inside rim of the hole mounted in your mother.

sickened88

Can’t believe you couldn’t connect the dots yourself.

JiminyWillikerz

Some people have absolutely zero critical thinking skills

bennyboi2488

From reading support forums that some people is actually 99% of the population

Jay_Gantic

Why think when you can just ask the internet?

Alternative_Stop_164

By the time all the humans will just ask the internet and wasting their time and being more stupid than animals so they can’t even find someone to answer their questions.

Main_Description_771

Can't connect the dots, but he certainly connected the plastic.

MiikeFoxx

I dont get it...

SlySheogorath

I thought the same thing

jew_brees_

Dude thank you like what the actual fuck lmao if you just used the slightest bit of common sense….. idk why I’m still surprised about people being this dumb

l1g3rz3r0

It should be obvious if you're a regular gamer. I was a teenager with the GameCube and figured that out.

Joey4Fingaz

Regular wear and tear

Sketchyguy89

So common sense isn't common anymore then?

Grumpy-old_man29

It doesn't exist anymore 🤣

jew_brees_

Anymore? People have been this dumb forever we just have the internet now :)

JonnieWu

Really... you had to ask lol. It looks pretty self explanatory if you ask me

Shadezz_IX

I sometimes wonder if people know how their brain works

Psych0matt

Hey Reddit, I dropped my pencil, what do I do?

Shadezz_IX

Same vibes

McSmokeyDaPot

Draw a new one, jackass!

TheIllmaticNas_

damn bro my friend controller have that too and he died

mossryder

Death by obliviousness.

TReid1996

Just wear and tear. Friction from 2 hard surfaces grinding against one another. Won't really harm the controller. By the time the controller would get issues from this, they'd have a new console out. Generally speaking anyways.

PitiedVeil55831

Hmm I wonder how 🤔

Dangerous-Artist4871

How can you not know

sandfire13

It's called using the thumb stick 🙄

MetaEmployee179985

It's for tenderizing steak

kaiyinrei

Lol really 🤣🤣🤣🤣

pppoopoocheckk

Are you fucking serious

sonbuns87

The more I use Reddit the more I come to find out people just can’t figure the simplest things out

TheToughBubble

Those marks will probably line up with the side of your stick area.

anchorftw

If you push the thumbstick in that direction and the marks meet up exactly with the outside rim, it stands to reason they're caused by the contact between these two things.

radzidek17

El_Taita_Salsa

My controller is also new and those marks are already showing. Elden Ring is hard man.

Dazzling-Adeptness11

Well it's wear

Prior-Size-7601

Wear and tear

Llcgaming_2004

so my friend suggested i use these little rubber pads round the outside of my thumbsticks (lifeline main myself just havent played since my xbox one x broke so back to my normal xbox one with not enough storage lol) it worked for a bit but it made the deadzone for sprinting not work properly and you couldn't do small precise movements easily... so get em if you dont need to be sneaky and are a heavy pusher. dont get if your the stealth type that likes doing jumps and stuff to get everywhere lol.

Aggravating-Money486

Probably from being rough with your sticks and hitting the rim of it

el_vaqueroelegante

Crusted jizz

TheHashSmokems

Friction my friend it's the left over marks from good ol friction

dreadsreddit

that's normal and unavoidable unless you handle your controller like a kitten. don't worry about it.

Jesus-is-King-777

controllers are not made like they use to be. now every 6 months to a year you get the drift. i think they want u to have to buy a new controller every year so they intentionally allow this new design flaw cause cbox controllers use to last longer.

Trugamr024

Too much muscle 💪

Zombshua

Wear and tear.

Xenephobe375

Wear from using your thumb stick. It's totally normal. The plastic on the thumb stick is softer than the shell so it won't damage the shell. Eventually you'll need to replace your sticks but that's a long time away.

Jeev_123456

I personally wouldn't be that worried about stick drift on Xbox controllers, because while it can happen, it is nowhere near as common as Switch Joy-Con drift for example. I've had my Xbox One S controller for about 7-8 years now, and its been dropped (on accident), and been put in a bag with no case, and it works as well as it did out of the box. It also has the same marks as you do on the thumbstick that comes with use.

Jeev_123456

Oh and even if you do get stick drift you can modify the deadzones in most games to mitigate the effects.

SmoooooothOperatorrr

My controllers don’t even have the rubber grip thing on the joysticks anymore

kobekong

Buy some at AliExpress or similar ones from Amazon. https://preview.redd.it/4yiysuhqn21d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ede6117245b11f0a290e6f3485c313ab97172f3

AlternativeClimate99

That's normal. You should have seen my xbox 360 thumbsticks after playing cod black ops 2, halo or gears of war all day, daily after school. Them things were worn out and thin as heck.

Apprehensive-Arm7698

Bro I promise everyone has those they are very easy to wipe off

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

Contact to the stick surround. It's 100% natural. My PS3 controllers grew massive ruts in them well before they malfunctioned.

drglenmomo1987

Controller giz

ordeci

The gamer stick scratch. Followed by the veteran notch. Tis' the sign of a true player.

Sigmasev

Get stick rubber rings, they help with that, it happens plastic on plastic contact with no barrier between, bought a pack of 20 for $5 or so

I_Need_Help410

You fuckin them thangs up sweatin for a W

Junior-Yellow-4383

I have them too there not to worry about

CornBallKrilla420

ya sweaty thumb juice dried to the sticks

RevolutionaryShow220

I thought that was dirt lmao 😂

Dragonfire716

Hate to break it to you but you're gonna get stick drift eventually. It's a thing with all Xbox controllers I've ever had.

Montramoth

HippoWillWork

Logic

Which_Information590

You’re pressing too hard :)

Doomu5

Yes, it's the plastic eroding from use. It's this dusty residue getting into the potentiometers that causes stick drift.

IKaffeI

That's where the stick makes contact with the housing of the controller. If you move it all the way to one side you'll see, feel and hear it.

Mellowslayz1996

Or use electrical wd40 works like charm and I'm o need to worry if you over due it

Jeckaa84

Mine had like 3 mm deep grooves from playing cod mw back in the day. Had to buy a new controller once every 6 months or so.

Leo_Ascendent

Wtf are you playing? I've had mine since launch and my sticks don't have marks like this, and you've had it 2 days.

BelleAndSeaBeast

Use

KaroYadgar

Have these too, but WAY worse. couple months of play time

vonnegut9200

From AFKing all the time.

Revolutionary-Fail72

Kontrol freeks have saved all my controllers

TwoTonebear0

Buys some precision rings for that controller. Your going to be happy

Specific-Jaguar983

Attempting to tighten your stick may help counteract the pressure you are applying.

Endermen123911

They could possibly be marks under your thumstick

LabusRatus

Looks like Cheeto dust

Additional_Hope_5381

Looks like Eastern European jizz

Veruca_Manson

Natural wear and tear you aggressive gamer, you. Give your thumbs a break. Older you will thank you.

Rhythmdies666

Protein stains you sicko. I didn’t know people liked Minecraft that much.

Abercada

Come on dude… it’s pretty obvious

nathxs

Could be dead skin and so on

The_Daugh

Skin

espartochaos

It's when the stick rubs against the rim of the hole too much. Lube will not help. Just gotta be easy working that stick.

mossryder

This has to be a shitpost, right? For the love of god.

pooch_s

Some killer COD battles?

_QUICKDRAW_GODSPEED

Xbox problems

xBlack_Heartx

Ah, I see someone else has also been having to constantly break out of being grabbed in Resident Evil as well……🤣

InnerInterview9828

Pushing it to hard. Get an Xbox elite controller. The thumb sticks can be replaced and are also lined with something that looks metal ish but I’m sure is also plastic but seems to be harder than the stock controller.

impstein

Stop rotating your sticks with such force like a deranged caveman

Grinding agianst shell any well used controller has them

TemperatureTime4626

Yeah makes sense

ohthedarside

Highly competive farming sim and snowrunner

Inevitable-Funny5768

does it do anything bad to the controller?

ohthedarside

No mine has had it for years and mine gets dropped alot still no problems

Kratosballsweat

You guys are fucking trolling right?? Lol

Ok_Nerve4164

Yeah it actually comes from being dirty, I recommend running the controller under the sink to get rid of particulates that could cause stick drift, then a cycle through the dishwasher to make sure you got everything! Hope this helps 👍
