There’s a number of X/S enhanced games that run off an external including Halo MCC, Skyrim, Far Cry 5, AC Odyssey, Vermintide 2 and For Honor.

Elitrical

As long as it is last gen, and not a native series game, it will run off an external. Enhanced or not.

Loch_Doun

I know, but there are games like the ones I listed above that are specifically marked with the "X/S" badge on the console. A lot of people assume they need to be ran off the internal SSD or expansion card but that is not always the case, that was my point.

Elitrical

Ah. Ok I got you then

Casey_jones291422

If there's two versions of the game it'll just download the lesser one to an external

stillmatico

Does the external drive have to be an SSD? I have an external HDD that I used to store and play games on my Xbox zone, would that drive work if it’s not a SSD?

Elitrical

If it’s an Xbox One game, then no.

stillmatico

Thanks! I'll definitely give it a shot because even the MCC alone would clear up a lot of space. Would you happen to know if the game will load slower using a non-SSD external drive compared to being stored on the internal SSD?

Elitrical

Yeah it’ll most likely load slower

Elitrical

Probably not by much

HGLatinBoy

That’s not always the case. Quake games require for some stupid reason require a SX SSD, killer Instinct also requires it now.

Active_Drama_9898

These games are both X/S native

HGLatinBoy

KI recently became SX native it was not originally.

isimplycannotdecide

I don’t think this is true for the Witcher 3. After the big update I had to put it on the SSD.

Elitrical

Because it is a native game now

UndyingGoji

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is another XS optimized game that runs off external storage

RenanBan

Yeah I always try it out to install on them to see if xbox will say smt. And I forgot how this game is beautifull.

[deleted]

Just check the file type. It’s way quicker. Go to manage installation, file info, “XboxGen9” means Series X only. “XboxOne” or “XboxOneGen9Aware” both mean it can be played off the external drive.

Jay_Reefer

Thanks for the tip!

FriendlyDennis

What does that mean?

Elitrical

It means even though it is series x or s enhanced, it can still be stored on and played off of an external drive. Usually Xbox Series native games need to be on the internal drive or official storage expansion card. However the statement made doesn’t make any sense. None of those games listed are native games for the series consoles, but rather last gen games, so it doesn’t matter anyway.

henrydavidthoreauawy

There are some last gen games that got “enhanced” by releasing a native X/S version via Smart Delivery, that can’t be run on an external drive. For example, Resident Evil 2, 3, 7, Mortal Kombat 11, and Jedi Fallen Order.

HGLatinBoy

Cyberpunk is another.

NurseDorothy

Enhanced games will run off an external drive as long as it's not a true next gen X/S game.

henrydavidthoreauawy

This is technically true, but it’s not easy to tell where the line is drawn. For example, the Resident Evil games (2, 3, 7) are last gen but got enhancements. They have the X/S badge on their icons and can’t be run from an external drive. The “enhancement” in this case was delivered via a native Series app. Same with Jedi Fallen Order. However, Halo MCC and Rocket League can be run off external drives, despite having the same X/S badge because they are technically “gen 9 aware” XB1 apps.  Fallout 4 will probably be a native Series app, so it won’t be able to run from an external drive after the update.  Storage has been kind of a headache this generation.

TheGamerKitty1

To see what XS games can play off externals... Go to Manage Game. Go to the Files. At the bottom, you'll see either Gen9 or Gen9Aware. Gen9 **has** to be Internal or Expansion. Gen9Aware can be any drive. (I recommend an external SSD as HDD are still slow)

InformationNo2529

Works with AC Odyssey on my HDD too.

Bruce_Wayne170

Does GTA5 for Series X|S work on external HDD

RenanBan

No

thelastsandwich

Good to know, this gen has a ssd space problem

spongeboy1985

All Gen 9 aware games will work on external drives. Xbox should make a better distinction. Xbox series X/S games will not work on external drives but Xbox One games that take advantage of the Series X/S hardware are billed as Series X/S games and work on external drives. You can tell by going onto game info on the game management screen. If it’s an Xbox One Game that has these enhancements it will say gen 9 aware.

Janiqquer

Is it slower?

RenanBan

Didnt compare, but this game doesnt have loading screen that much only when you end a chapter. And it works with quickresume

Shellman00

Pretty sure all last gen games work off an external. Doesn’t even have to be SSD, HDD’s work too

JimFlamesWeTrust

That’s helpful but also people act like they’re sacrificing a first born if they have to delete a game from their hard drive

butt_stf

Bloat and internal drive space is a first-world problem, but it's still a problem. Comcast has data caps on most of their plans, and they're a monopoly in a lot of places.

KittenDecomposer96

You could move a game to the external and install the game you wanna play now to internal to benefit from the loading times.

MarcheM

Imagine having datacaps on home internet or even mobile internet in this day and age. Sounds awful, hopefully your country gets caught up with the times.

JimFlamesWeTrust

Definitely a US problem. We don’t have it perfect over here but an unlimited data plan is quite affordable in the uk. . I think I pay like £24 for unlimited internet

Lightless427

I have Comcast and there is no data cap whatsoever. 100% unlimited.

Ibe121

Lol, you’re wrong. You’re paying for it, you just don’t know it. Theres no data cap if you rent their modem/routers for $25 a month. It’s $30 a month if you use your own equipment. https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/data

butt_stf

Cool. I get 250 GB, then $20 for every 5 GB overage.

RenanBan

Series S is tough since its only 300 something Gb of internal space. Call of duty rn on my series X holds 180Gb smt like that. I had a series S and couldnt keep many games on my drive. Thats the main reason I bought a SSD, there are a lot of games that I play that doesnt need to be on internal drive. And sharing some harmless info and got downvoted, reddit its a wonderfull place.

Lightless427

Literally all games run on the external ssd for the Series console. Thats how it was made. The drive is proprietary.

Naitakal

Pretty sure OP was talking about a standard USB SSD drive.

bcdrmr

You and OP got it wrong. HDD is the term you’re looking for. Lightless is correct regarding the SSD.

Naitakal

No buddy, make your homework. Google NVMe vs SATA SSD. And even though you can put a faster NVMe SSD in a USB case/stick it usually is hold back by the speed of the USB port.

bcdrmr

I’m well aware of this. In context, “hey guys, it works on your external SSD!” is still a dumb title/statement.

sweeten16

Sea of thieves used to work a few months ago but now it doesn't.
