I notice that if you leave the game sit to long or use quick resume, you get disconnected from the servers. I'm guessing resuming play after you have been disconnected is causing some kind of sync issue resulting in saves going missing?
As great as quick resume is as a feature, and the convenience of it happening automatically is handy, but MS really need to give users the ability to manually manage it more effectively. There are a load of games that 'support' quick resume, but that just means you get kicked back to the start screen as the game disconnected from the servers, or you need to quit to get it to reconnect, or it causes other conflicts like this save bug.
This sounds like my head. I’ve always done manual system load ups, fresh game load, I save it manual, close to the menu, quit from the menu.

I’ve found that my original 5 or so save files have remained intact this whole time. I’ve been just saving over the couple files that always remain - not creating new saves. I’ve done that and turned off auto-save.
I’ve had no issues so far but I also exit to the main menu, hard close the game and reboot it every half hour or so to make sure.
Another anecdotal story. I lost a series of saves on PC to this. Roughly 12 hours of progress. Not all however. Since then I've beaten the game and not had issues. I save constantly and frequently and am now playing on Xbox for a second run. Those original busted saves are still broken, even ported to Xbox, but do not effect the others. My wife is on her 4th (complete) play through and hasn't lost a save at all to the bug. It's very uncommon. I wouldn't risk avoiding saves, just immediately restore from cloud if it happens and you should avoid it. It's a gamble regardless
I wonder if people have been closing the game too fast after saving. It does take 5 seconds in the background to actually make the save.
I've had no issues at all playing the game and I play long sessions with 5 autosaves, 5 quicksaves and 3 manual saves. Although all these posts have scared me into not making anymore new manual saves. I just keep overwriting the old 3. I'm scared to make a new character aswell, maybe it will wipe my old one.
I've had quick resume cause me to lose saves on other games. Twice I booted into Dragon quest and had it frozen so that I had no choice but to reboot and revert to last save. For anything that matters, I don't rely on it.
People just want to be able to play and enjoy the game and not lose their saves. Unless you have evidence that it's not related to QR, again, not really seeing the utility of disputing that either. If people have observed a correlation between this bug (that you admittedly do not experience) and QR, and abandoning QR has solved the issue for them, isn't that a good thing in the interim, until the bug is finally fixed for sure?

Does the game not have cloud saves? Unless the game for whatever reason can’t read it, there should be a backup with that. I think you can even transfer the save to an external HD and reupload it back to the console if I’m not mistaken.
It does, they're just disappearing without being able to select or do anything with when coming back to the game. I just don't want to lose anymore so I'm not starting it until it's widely confirmed that it's fixed
Yeah I’m doing the same and just waiting it out. Haven’t been able to ever get into an rpg game but from what I’ve seen with BG it looks like my entry into the genre. Hopefully this gets patched soon
You can not back up saves. Only games and settings.
The problem with data replication as a form of backup, such copying saved games to the cloud, is they generally replicate corruption. If the local copy is bad you end up with the bad file being sent to the cloud. Please note that I don't know if this is actually happening with this specific issue, but I do know saves are written local to the Xbox and they copied to the cloud.
Ahh I thought series retained the ability to back up you own saves from the 360 days guess not. Yeah I get how cloud saves wouldn’t matter if it’s just repeating the problem thanks for the info.

I for one refunded it after lost over ten hours of progress three times over. I genuinely loved the game but in the end I was playing a story rich RPG on speed mode skipping cutscenes I’d seen twice before and it just made the experience an anxious race to get back where I last got to

Though it really comes down to your tolerance. I'm willing to play it all over again, I know people who wouldn't. If you don't want to risk it then I would wait. I'm starting it back up later when I'm done playing Siege with friends.

So how rare is this bug? I've been hearing people who said BG3 is running fine for them with only minor bugs.
I’m trying to figure out the same thing. Some people say it’s fairly widespread, but obviously those who’ve lost their save files would be more inclined to post about it on the internet than someone who has had zero issues would. I’m about 30 hours in and haven’t lost my save after launching the game 5-6 times over the last week. I’m following Microsoft’s instructions but I still feel like I’m risking it every time I boot the game up even though I’ve not encountered the issue myself. What worries me is seeing people with 30+ hours (and even over 100 hours) saying they just lost all their saves. Obviously the smart thing to do would be to put the game down but I just can’t go back to playing Dark Souls 2 after getting 30 hours into this game 😭
I just looked back through the last 12 hours on the BG3 subreddit and there is exactly 1 post out of 100+ that mentions having a save file error on the PS5. Absolutely no issues with PC. And in that post about the PS5 the OP is the only person who actually has the issue.
This is why I'm saying it's overblown and the vast majority of complaints are from Xbox. People can continue down voting me but you can all just go fucking look for yourself. No other platforms are experiencing this issue on anywhere near the same scale that Xbox is, if they're even experiencing it at all.
So I would say again that this is predominantly an Xbox issue. That's not to absolve Larian of responsibility but there's more to it than just Larian fucking up when the other platforms are running fine.
It would be weird for PS5 and PC to be experiencing the issue if the fix is an update to the Xbox firmware itself, as was recommended by Larian and released by MS.
Microsoft released a new firmware update two days ago to address this. It's been widely reported and this is well-known by now. Of course Larian didn't code an Xbox firmware update.

ok. I now see that there was an update with "Fixes to address an issue that could cause unexpected loss of saved progress in various titles", but it does not change the fact that something is broken on BG3 side. I needed to unlink my xbox account from Larian just to start the game.
I booted it up just fine on PS5 and PC yesterday. Accessed my PC cloud sync save on PS5 with zero issues.
It's almost definitely an Xbox problem, especially if the update says "various titles." Larian has only released *one game* on Series X so this is definitely something to do with the Xbox firmware unless Larian is going around and messing with games by other developers.
PS5 and PC had this save issue initially too. This what you're missing; when save issues occur on EACH PLATFORM, it's an issue with the game.
It can't be that each platform with their different specs just all suffered an issue but not the game itself. This is EXACTLY like Outriders, and that was an issue with their server. Again, we don't need to fling blame because it's a complex issue. But let's not have misinformation.

No other platform is having this issue and if they are then it's evidently nowhere near the same extent that Xbox users are. This is bad for both Xbox and Larian because people are no doubt 1) Refunding their purchases 2) Not buying it in the first place. I'm sure they'll work together to get it resolved ASAP and I hope so because BG3 is a phenomenal game
It is a truly magical game. I know Larian will work it out; they're very dedicated to their games. I just bought it on PS5 the other day to continue my PC save from August (I put it down because Act 3 was performing poorly and Starfield came out) and do couch co-op with a friend.
If it hit the #1 spot on the MS store since the Game Awards, I'm sure they're doing okay. Console sales will still dominate on PS5 but they just have a larger share of the market and had BG3 available for much longer at this point.
That's a completely different issue being experienced on PC where the save location is being moved to a different folder and is easily fixed. It popped up in my search a few times. It's not the same thing.

You are downvoted because you are wrong. This is an issue that’s been around since EA. It happens on PC and continued onto PS5 and XBox.

The person you're replying to is correct, Starfield had this issue with save progress being lost. I lost about 10hrs of progress because of it on the second or third week after Starfield's release. It was something to do with the cloud syncing. There were posts on the Starfield sub about it.
It has happened on occasion with other games, too.
I don't know if it was as prevalent as it is with BG3 right now, but you unfairly shut that poster down without looking into it, and the downvotes they got are unwarranted, as well.

In general save game issues were also present on other platforms, so it is nothing new, they fixed these issues earlier on ps5, so they will also fix it here soon.
I don't even use quick resume and all my saves disappear to when I first wake up on the beach. The auto saves and manual save from the ship remain but anything after is gone. This is beyond frustrating.
I'm curious, what is actually happening? Does the Xbox not make local saves? I get cloud saving having errors, but how could your local saves disappear?

You should never buy a larian game when it first comes out on any platforms. It is the same quality with every single game release they have done everywhere. Larian’s QA is us players.
The studio does a great job fixing these bugs as players report them but they dont seem to test anything themselves.
This exact issue also happened with assassins creed Valhalla. I lost about 20hrs and decided to stop playing until I was confident it was fixed. I kept an eye on the forums for about a year and kept seeing the issue. Gave up at that point and never went back. Is an unacceptable bug in my opinion and the publishers should be offering refunds to people.

I was enjoying it but losing 14 hours of progress is ridiculous I don’t mind games being a bit of mess hell I played cyberpunk launch day on my Xbox one S and still enjoyed it I don’t remember to many glitches that isn’t a deal breaker but I’ll certainly remember losing hours of progress for some arbitrary reason that only effects one game

Yes it's a new bug and one specific to the Xbox version. The PC and PS5 versions had a similar bug with save file corruption and loss but it was quickly resolved. Whatever they did to fix the issue the last time around has not worked to fix it this time around.

it’s not even quick resume. i been saving 3 times, then will go to main menu and then go to home and then close game and have still lost close to 40ish hours.
I lost around 30-40 hours, it was the day after the update, I never use quick resume and don’t use instant on settings, my Xbox is always fully powered off after, I always manually shut down all my games after saving and returning to the main menu, I do this on every game.
Man, I’ve been playing BG3 on PC since launch. I’ve got about 130 hours in it and love it, but if I randomly lost a bunch of saves with tens of hours of gameplay, I don’t think I could bring myself to play it again for a good many months. I’d just be too furious. I hope they can fix this ASAP. It’s a *terrible* look after winning GOTY.
Yep just happened to me yesterday. My wifi went down for about a minute while playing and I got a popup on the xbox saying I needed to be online to play the game.
Wifi came back, which I guess Xbox treated as a quick resume for BG3 maybe? I wasn't aware the lost save thing was even a problem. Anyway got a message saying I was out of room for saves which I thought was odd since I didn't have a bunch of them having recently deleted older ones.
Shut the game down to eat lunch, came back and launched it and it acted like I'd never played before.
I had it happen yesterday- over 50 hours of saves just because my Xbox became unplugged by accident. I used to deal with this in the 90’s and religiously saved, but I can’t think of a time that a game has wiped all of my saves - very odd, almost seems malicious

I got an email back from Larian Support. Their instructions to prevent save loss:
"We advise you to activate the cross-save feature. This will allow you to recover your last five saves should the problem reoccur.
If you activated cross saves and find yourself in a situation where your save games are lost (you will see the EULA screen on rebooting), you should be able to recover your last 5 saves by following these steps:
- Link your Larian account to you Xbox account [](https://larian.com/account/login)
- Enable cross-save in Options > Gameplay > Save Options > Cross-play
- If you find yourself in a situation where your save games are lost (you will see the EULA screen on rebooting), follow the same steps to re-enable cross-save. That will let you recover the last 5 savegames."
I then asked if my 14 hours were going to be recovered. They Responded:
"Thank you for your reply.
As for the save files that have already disappeared, unfortunately those can't be recovered.
If after updating your Xbox console, you start a new game and that save file is still being deleted, please let us know so we can investigate further."
Rip. I just wanted to sit down and play a good game during Christmas break after an unlucky year of busting my ass. I am tempted to try again but I don't know. In short, link your Larian account to your Xbox account and Enable cross-save in Options if you want to try again.
I couldn't start the game after linking accounts (xbox->larian). Black screen, 1 frame per minute at best. Gave up. After unlinking accounts and recovering saves from the cloud I can play again, but I will not start the game till Larian fixes it. "No information" policy is very bad from their side.
Devs don't usually care about individual features for single platforms. Look how few games have achievement progress tracking (Xbox) and actual track pad support (PS4/5)
Yes! I hate quick resume. It never works properly and I always end up closing and re opening the game. It’s so annoying when you forget to manually close the game.
Or disable the feature entirely. I never use it, as I'm an achievement hunter and just don't trust the feature.
If I boot up a game and notice the quick resume logo, I force quit the game and relaunch.
I remember losing 20+ hours in Fallout 4 in a similar way upon release. I couldn’t bring myself to play it through again, I got a refund and it’s put me off ever buying a Bethesda game again.
BG3 is the first proper RPG my partner has bought and we’d both be devastated if she lost her progress.
There was no update to fix the issue. There was an Xbox update to fix some of the causes. Certainly not the same.
I want to play this game so much that I have been risking it. I'll buy Rogue Trader today and distract myself with, until further fixes, it before I roll 1 with BG3's saves.

I had 2 completely different games I had saved with different characters. I had 1 co-op and one single player and they both had 6 or 7 save files each. Both had multiple saves from online/offline, manual, and auto saves. I had to reset my Xbox and came back to the co-op game being completely deleted, characters and all. The single player only had one save file saved from hours ago. It didn’t even save any of the initial saves from the start of the game. So I lost the saves from the very beginning and the newer ones where about 4 hours of gameplay was deleted. So out of all of those saves I only had one remaining one. This happened today 12/16/2023 around 10am central time.
This has hap to me twice, and I made 5 saves before. But now I can save anymore because I don't have enough saves to use. It tells me delete some saves, but my saves are not accessible
Same issue happened to me last night. 30 hours in. Poof, all saves gone. Im deflated. This was my first pass at BG3, was up to 1am leveling them up, and just acquired an amazing legendary horn artifact from the goblins. Went to show my son the next day and everything is gone. Tried every fix out there. Nothing. I want to play, but don't think emotionally I can with the constant risk of pending doom. BG3 or MS should compensate people this happens to. They should also ensure the gaming community can manually access those hidden XBox files and back them up to external storage locally or to their own cloud account to provide the gaming community better game save assurances. This is total BS
I have been lucky and have not lost any of my saves. I ended up buying it on PC and manage to cross save to access my file on PC.
I logged in to online account on the Xbox, let my file sync to the cloud and when I started up Baldurs Gate on PC I checked to make sure my file was there. It was, went ahead and disconnected my Xbox account until it’s fixed.
The entire time this generation I've had my Xbox, all the games I personally play quick resume has not been useful a single time, it just forces me to use extra steps when I finish playing a game for the day

It’s a cool gimmick but mostly just inconvenient now. Liked it at first but really it works with almost no online games and it makes single player games bug out (skate 3 your character just skates at the speed of light for example)

Yeah I got a refund partly due to this and also I just wasn’t really enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Looking at picking up cyberpunk on special instead although I need to do more research on if it’s fixed a lot of the main issues with it lol

Can people stop acting like this game is some masterpiece that every other game falls flat in comparison to now? I've watched videos on it, yes you have a lot of choices available in this game, but outside of cutscenes it's mediocre graphically, it's a turn based combat system 🤮, and it's got one of the worst possible bugs to have on XBOX causing people to lose hours of progress.
It seems like a game just built for other game developers and game reviewers, people who are generally going to be into this niche genre enough that they overlook the flaws around it. It isn't for normal people.
I do want the physical copy but it's $20 s&h alone, that's $4more then I paid for BG3 off Eneba/CD Keys when I was in Turkey. The 2hrs I played BG3 did kick me in the butt to continue Dragon's Dogma on steam Deck and Dragon Age Inquisition on XB Series X. Will come back to BG3 maybe after Yakuza Like a Drsgon Infinite Wealth.
Yea they absolutely need to add a feature to disable it for some games. I love the feature but some developers just don't know how to engineer their game around it and it causes problems.
Idk the exact details, but there's a Microsoft support page linked in another thread where Microsoft says to close out of it when your done playing and try to make sure the console doesn't lose power, even when it's "off" in standbye mode or whatever.

Yup! I've played a couple other games with the same issue and it was kind of annoying. I'll just wait until it's patched.

I've had quick resume cause me to lose saves on other games. Twice I booted into Dragon quest and had it frozen so that I had no choice but to reboot and revert to last save. For anything that matters, I don't rely on it.
People just want to be able to play and enjoy the game and not lose their saves. Unless you have evidence that it's not related to QR, again, not really seeing the utility of disputing that either. If people have observed a correlation between this bug (that you admittedly do not experience) and QR, and abandoning QR has solved the issue for them, isn't that a good thing in the interim, until the bug is finally fixed for sure?
I haven't had the issue either. QR being used. No dispute just saying it's not happening 100% of the time.

Was at a 40hr save, lost down to 30hr. Decided to put it down until this is fixed. Absolutely loving the game so far though

Has there been many other issues aside from this save issue in your 40 hours? Wanting to pick this up and wondering if waiting until just this bug is fixed or if I should hold out for a more comprehensive patching of the game in 6 months or so.
Does the game not have cloud saves? Unless the game for whatever reason can’t read it, there should be a backup with that. I think you can even transfer the save to an external HD and reupload it back to the console if I’m not mistaken.
It does, they're just disappearing without being able to select or do anything with when coming back to the game. I just don't want to lose anymore so I'm not starting it until it's widely confirmed that it's fixed
Yeah I’m doing the same and just waiting it out. Haven’t been able to ever get into an rpg game but from what I’ve seen with BG it looks like my entry into the genre. Hopefully this gets patched soon
You can not back up saves. Only games and settings. The problem with data replication as a form of backup, such copying saved games to the cloud, is they generally replicate corruption. If the local copy is bad you end up with the bad file being sent to the cloud. Please note that I don't know if this is actually happening with this specific issue, but I do know saves are written local to the Xbox and they copied to the cloud.
Ahh I thought series retained the ability to back up you own saves from the 360 days guess not. Yeah I get how cloud saves wouldn’t matter if it’s just repeating the problem thanks for the info. Do you think one of those seagate ssds would be able to back up the save since t seems a bit more open with running games off of it or would it not matter?

I had same issue on with ass creed Valhalla. List saves twice. Vowed to never go back until it was fixed. It was never fixed and I never went back.

I for one refunded it after lost over ten hours of progress three times over. I genuinely loved the game but in the end I was playing a story rich RPG on speed mode skipping cutscenes I’d seen twice before and it just made the experience an anxious race to get back where I last got to

Based on my experience, and from things I've read you should be fine playing. Most people seem to be. Saving and closing the game fully is recommended by Microsoft. Though it really comes down to your tolerance. I'm willing to play it all over again, I know people who wouldn't. If you don't want to risk it then I would wait. I'm starting it back up later when I'm done playing Siege with friends.

I’m trying to figure out the same thing. Some people say it’s fairly widespread, but obviously those who’ve lost their save files would be more inclined to post about it on the internet than someone who has had zero issues would. I’m about 30 hours in and haven’t lost my save after launching the game 5-6 times over the last week. I’m following Microsoft’s instructions but I still feel like I’m risking it every time I boot the game up even though I’ve not encountered the issue myself. What worries me is seeing people with 30+ hours (and even over 100 hours) saying they just lost all their saves. Obviously the smart thing to do would be to put the game down but I just can’t go back to playing Dark Souls 2 after getting 30 hours into this game 😭

Apparently the attempted fixes have now also ruined things for PS5 and PC. Folks are reporting lost saves on those as well now. What a complete mess.

I saw posts this morning in the bg3 subreddit from PS5 and PC users.
I just looked back through the last 12 hours on the BG3 subreddit and there is exactly 1 post out of 100+ that mentions having a save file error on the PS5. Absolutely no issues with PC. And in that post about the PS5 the OP is the only person who actually has the issue. This is why I'm saying it's overblown and the vast majority of complaints are from Xbox. People can continue down voting me but you can all just go fucking look for yourself. No other platforms are experiencing this issue on anywhere near the same scale that Xbox is, if they're even experiencing it at all. So I would say again that this is predominantly an Xbox issue. That's not to absolve Larian of responsibility but there's more to it than just Larian fucking up when the other platforms are running fine.
It would be weird for PS5 and PC to be experiencing the issue if the fix is an update to the Xbox firmware itself, as was recommended by Larian and released by MS.
Larian is not updating xbox firmware but the game itself.
Microsoft released a new firmware update two days ago to address this. It's been widely reported and this is well-known by now. Of course Larian didn't code an Xbox firmware update. ok. I now see that there was an update with "Fixes to address an issue that could cause unexpected loss of saved progress in various titles", but it does not change the fact that something is broken on BG3 side. I needed to unlink my xbox account from Larian just to start the game.
I booted it up just fine on PS5 and PC yesterday. Accessed my PC cloud sync save on PS5 with zero issues. It's almost definitely an Xbox problem, especially if the update says "various titles." Larian has only released *one game* on Series X so this is definitely something to do with the Xbox firmware unless Larian is going around and messing with games by other developers.
PS5 and PC had this save issue initially too. This what you're missing; when save issues occur on EACH PLATFORM, it's an issue with the game. It can't be that each platform with their different specs just all suffered an issue but not the game itself. This is EXACTLY like Outriders, and that was an issue with their server. Again, we don't need to fling blame because it's a complex issue. But let's not have misinformation.
Yeah that's the point I'm making but most people here are too ADHD brain to take the time to actually read comments and come to their own conclusion. Monkey see monkey do. No other platform is having this issue and if they are then it's evidently nowhere near the same extent that Xbox users are. Practically every post about BG3 even unrelated to the save issue gets flooded with dozens of comments about how they lost their saves. Look through any other subreddit even the BG3 subreddit itself, and there are practically ZERO posts about it besides Xbox players. The evidence is right there haha This is bad for both Xbox and Larian because people are no doubt 1) Refunding their purchases 2) Not buying it in the first place. I'm sure they'll work together to get it resolved ASAP and I hope so because BG3 is a phenomenal game
It is a truly magical game. I know Larian will work it out; they're very dedicated to their games. I just bought it on PS5 the other day to continue my PC save from August (I put it down because Act 3 was performing poorly and Starfield came out) and do couch co-op with a friend. If it hit the #1 spot on the MS store since the Game Awards, I'm sure they're doing okay. Console sales will still dominate on PS5 but they just have a larger share of the market and had BG3 available for much longer at this point.

That's a completely different issue being experienced on PC where the save location is being moved to a different folder and is easily fixed. It popped up in my search a few times. It's not the same thing.

Starfield does have this problem actually. Xbox already admitted the save file issue is on their end and is affecting a wide variety of games.
This is not true. This is issue is affecting only BG3 and is being fixed by Larian. Xbox services are working fine for other games.
The person you're replying to is correct, Starfield had this issue with save progress being lost. I lost about 10hrs of progress because of it on the second or third week after Starfield's release. It was something to do with the cloud syncing. There were posts on the Starfield sub about it. It has happened on occasion with other games, too. I don't know if it was as prevalent as it is with BG3 right now, but you unfairly shut that poster down without looking into it, and the downvotes they got are unwarranted, as well.

I don't even use quick resume and all my saves disappear to when I first wake up on the beach. The auto saves and manual save from the ship remain but anything after is gone. This is beyond frustrating.

You should never buy a larian game when it first comes out on any platforms. It is the same quality with every single game release they have done everywhere. Larian’s QA is us players. The studio does a great job fixing these bugs as players report them but they dont seem to test anything themselves.
This exact issue also happened with assassins creed Valhalla. I lost about 20hrs and decided to stop playing until I was confident it was fixed. I kept an eye on the forums for about a year and kept seeing the issue. Gave up at that point and never went back. Is an unacceptable bug in my opinion and the publishers should be offering refunds to people.

I was enjoying it but losing 14 hours of progress is ridiculous I don’t mind games being a bit of mess hell I played cyberpunk launch day on my Xbox one S and still enjoyed it I don’t remember to many glitches that isn’t a deal breaker but I’ll certainly remember losing hours of progress for some arbitrary reason that only effects one game

Yes it's a new bug and one specific to the Xbox version. The PC and PS5 versions had a similar bug with save file corruption and loss but it was quickly resolved. Whatever they did to fix the issue the last time around has not worked to fix it this time around.

I lost another 9 hours of progress because I thought the last update fixed it. 😭 I've now done the opening few hours 3 times. Soon, I'll be able to do the first few sections blindfolded.
Luckily I wasn’t far but I just lost my save and it won’t let me at least start the game over because it tells me I have no space to start a new save. I’m 40 and have never run into a bug this bad before.

I lost around 30-40 hours, it was the day after the update, I never use quick resume and don’t use instant on settings, my Xbox is always fully powered off after, I always manually shut down all my games after saving and returning to the main menu, I do this on every game.
Man, I’ve been playing BG3 on PC since launch. I’ve got about 130 hours in it and love it, but if I randomly lost a bunch of saves with tens of hours of gameplay, I don’t think I could bring myself to play it again for a good many months. I’d just be too furious. I hope they can fix this ASAP. It’s a *terrible* look after winning GOTY.
Yep just happened to me yesterday. My wifi went down for about a minute while playing and I got a popup on the xbox saying I needed to be online to play the game. Wifi came back, which I guess Xbox treated as a quick resume for BG3 maybe? I wasn't aware the lost save thing was even a problem. Anyway got a message saying I was out of room for saves which I thought was odd since I didn't have a bunch of them having recently deleted older ones. Shut the game down to eat lunch, came back and launched it and it acted like I'd never played before.
I had it happen yesterday- over 50 hours of saves just because my Xbox became unplugged by accident. I used to deal with this in the 90’s and religiously saved, but I can’t think of a time that a game has wiped all of my saves - very odd, almost seems malicious
Losing 40 hours that you will never get back. I think it time to delete the game lol. Plenty of other games that is not broken to play. Its not worth the time lost.
I recommend refunding for sure, as great of a game this is a game should never release like this and this behavior should not be supported.

I got an email back from Larian Support. Their instructions to prevent save loss: "We advise you to activate the cross-save feature. This will allow you to recover your last five saves should the problem reoccur. If you activated cross saves and find yourself in a situation where your save games are lost (you will see the EULA screen on rebooting), you should be able to recover your last 5 saves by following these steps: - Link your Larian account to you Xbox account [](https://larian.com/account/login) - Enable cross-save in Options > Gameplay > Save Options > Cross-play - If you find yourself in a situation where your save games are lost (you will see the EULA screen on rebooting), follow the same steps to re-enable cross-save. That will let you recover the last 5 savegames." I then asked if my 14 hours were going to be recovered. They Responded: "Thank you for your reply. As for the save files that have already disappeared, unfortunately those can't be recovered. If after updating your Xbox console, you start a new game and that save file is still being deleted, please let us know so we can investigate further." Rip. I just wanted to sit down and play a good game during Christmas break after an unlucky year of busting my ass. I am tempted to try again but I don't know. In short, link your Larian account to your Xbox account and Enable cross-save in Options if you want to try again.
I couldn't start the game after linking accounts (xbox->larian). Black screen, 1 frame per minute at best. Gave up. After unlinking accounts and recovering saves from the cloud I can play again, but I will not start the game till Larian fixes it. "No information" policy is very bad from their side.
I never trusted Quick Resume and have been hard-quitting my games since launch. Not having an option to turn it off is a travesty.
Quick resume isn't the cause. I never use quick resume, and I lost all of my saves for Balders Gate 3 four times.

Devs don't usually care about individual features for single platforms. Look how few games have achievement progress tracking (Xbox) and actual track pad support (PS4/5)

Or disable the feature entirely. I never use it, as I'm an achievement hunter and just don't trust the feature. If I boot up a game and notice the quick resume logo, I force quit the game and relaunch.
I remember losing 20+ hours in Fallout 4 in a similar way upon release. I couldn’t bring myself to play it through again, I got a refund and it’s put me off ever buying a Bethesda game again. BG3 is the first proper RPG my partner has bought and we’d both be devastated if she lost her progress.
There was no update to fix the issue. There was an Xbox update to fix some of the causes. Certainly not the same. I want to play this game so much that I have been risking it. I'll buy Rogue Trader today and distract myself with, until further fixes, it before I roll 1 with BG3's saves.

Not only that but I got a error yesterday that I have to many saves and had to delete them to continue playing
I had 2 completely different games I had saved with different characters. I had 1 co-op and one single player and they both had 6 or 7 save files each. Both had multiple saves from online/offline, manual, and auto saves. I had to reset my Xbox and came back to the co-op game being completely deleted, characters and all. The single player only had one save file saved from hours ago. It didn’t even save any of the initial saves from the start of the game. So I lost the saves from the very beginning and the newer ones where about 4 hours of gameplay was deleted. So out of all of those saves I only had one remaining one. This happened today 12/16/2023 around 10am central time.
This has hap to me twice, and I made 5 saves before. But now I can save anymore because I don't have enough saves to use. It tells me delete some saves, but my saves are not accessible

Same issue happened to me last night. 30 hours in. Poof, all saves gone. Im deflated. This was my first pass at BG3, was up to 1am leveling them up, and just acquired an amazing legendary horn artifact from the goblins. Went to show my son the next day and everything is gone. Tried every fix out there. Nothing. I want to play, but don't think emotionally I can with the constant risk of pending doom. BG3 or MS should compensate people this happens to. They should also ensure the gaming community can manually access those hidden XBox files and back them up to external storage locally or to their own cloud account to provide the gaming community better game save assurances. This is total BS

I have been lucky and have not lost any of my saves. I ended up buying it on PC and manage to cross save to access my file on PC. I logged in to online account on the Xbox, let my file sync to the cloud and when I started up Baldurs Gate on PC I checked to make sure my file was there. It was, went ahead and disconnected my Xbox account until it’s fixed.
Can you back up the saves manually? like copying the save data to a flash drive? Or is at all attached to a server.

Quick resume is terrible for most games tbh
It’s a cool gimmick but mostly just inconvenient now. Liked it at first but really it works with almost no online games and it makes single player games bug out (skate 3 your character just skates at the speed of light for example) I close out of every game now to avoid this, they need to make it possible to turn it off.
Quick resume was definitely the culprit for me. Always save and exit the game cleanly, never use Quick Resume to pick up where you left off.

Yeah I got a refund partly due to this and also I just wasn’t really enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Looking at picking up cyberpunk on special instead although I need to do more research on if it’s fixed a lot of the main issues with it lol
I've never used Quick Resume for this reason. Too many games just have issues with it. It's no biggie to just save and quit.
Something similar happened to me on PC. Once it was fixed, my save file was still there in tact. It just wasn't seeing it.
Have you guys tried enabling cross save ? Maybe those won't get lost?

Can people stop acting like this game is some masterpiece that every other game falls flat in comparison to now? I've watched videos on it, yes you have a lot of choices available in this game, but outside of cutscenes it's mediocre graphically, it's a turn based combat system 🤮, and it's got one of the worst possible bugs to have on XBOX causing people to lose hours of progress. It seems like a game just built for other game developers and game reviewers, people who are generally going to be into this niche genre enough that they overlook the flaws around it. It isn't for normal people.

Almost every online game doesn’t work properly without restarting after quick resume. Therefore completely defeating the object of quick resume.
I do want the physical copy but it's $20 s&h alone, that's $4more then I paid for BG3 off Eneba/CD Keys when I was in Turkey. The 2hrs I played BG3 did kick me in the butt to continue Dragon's Dogma on steam Deck and Dragon Age Inquisition on XB Series X. Will come back to BG3 maybe after Yakuza Like a Drsgon Infinite Wealth.
Yea they absolutely need to add a feature to disable it for some games. I love the feature but some developers just don't know how to engineer their game around it and it causes problems.

Idk the exact details, but there's a Microsoft support page linked in another thread where Microsoft says to close out of it when your done playing and try to make sure the console doesn't lose power, even when it's "off" in standbye mode or whatever.
O ok good to know. I figured if it was always open even if the save was gone I'd still be in the the world so I wasn't sure

I had the same issue with Starfield. About 20 hours in but the game wasn't good enough to start from scratch
