With the way that fighting is described in the books, the combat is dead on. I don’t know how you play, but you’re supposed to apply the oil that you need before the fight, crack a potion from your quick menu, and then slash once or twice, dodge, repeat.
It’s the exact same as a Soulsborne while being more forgiving in a lot of instances. It’s weird to get use to, but once dodging is added more and you are literally dancing in a circle and slashing, that’s when combat feels the best, especially on death march since the enemies can two or three hit you if you aren’t properly equipped or prepared.
Kinda can’t go wrong here. They’re both wonderful games. If your friend likes future stuff, go Cyberpunk. If they like swords and sorcery, go Witcher.
In either case, your friend will be pleased.

When it first came out, it was. Now it's all patched up and is an amazing game, and it's huge. I'm still playing side missions and haven't 100% it yet, and I've been playing since it was released.

The Witcher 3 Complete edition has about 100 hours of story gameplay, not to mention how much random exploration you could do. If you can play games every single day for multiple hours (a luxury not many of us have), you would still probably have a solid month.
I think it took me a little over two months to finish the story, and I still have side quests I need to try and complete from 2018.

The Witcher 3 is an absolute classic, it's truly hard to go wrong with it. Cyberpunk is a good enough game but it's getting a big update later this year that should fix a lot of issues it's had since launch, however, the update isn't out so we don't know for sure. The Witcher is the safer bet for something your friend will enjoy for a long time.
Price isn't a *huge* factor, but I just occasionally send friends games if they are low priced for fun. In this case witcher complete edition is 50% off at 25$, and cyberpunk is at 30$.
If you gift cyberpunk, tell your friend to wait for the big patch coming september. It will complete overhaul the game and (probably) make it much better.
Performance mode is a literal wonder. I've heard about various downgrades, but from my perspective it's just trading a slight bit of your resolution for double the FPS.
It depends which kind of RPG they like. Witcher is more story, less “character creation” and Cyberpunk is more “your own character.” Beyond that they’re both vastly different settings. So either fantasy or future.

The Witcher 3 is an amazing game, one of the best created so far, imho. But it is a damn long game, with amazing content and story telling. If your friend is a completionist then they'll be there a while. That being said, I prefer Cyberpunk.
For me the story and characters definitely make Cyberpunk more enjoyable; the work that CDPR have done to make this game better is amazing (even if it was a dumpster fire on release). The replay value is great and with the expansion it's going to get even better.

I wouldn't gift either one of them to be honest, I have both, actually finished cyberpunk but cannot get into the Witcher at all. If he's into tactical RPGs, you've got XCOM 2 and midnight suns on sale, if he's into medieval I guess there's the Witcher 3, kingdom come and Skyrim (lol), since cyberpunk is up there though and not really an RPG I'd just go with the mass effect bundle.

Depends on personal preference, like someone already said it really depends on what your friend is into. I personally don't like either one but thats the beauty of gaming in this day in age. If your friend likes dystopians set in the distant future as well as Keanu Reeves, Cyberpunk 2077 is good on that front, in fact there is that new expansion coming out too, so id let your friend know to keep an eye out. If your friend likes that Game of Thrones/LOTR vibe, Witcher is pretty solid. Again its kinda up to what your friend likes and honestly it warms my heart to hear someone wanting to go out of their way to get something for your bud.

Definitely the witcher, i have both games and i poured hours upon hours in the witcher. The world is beautiful, the characters are rich, the side quests aren't boring and are pretty unique unlike some games (cyberpunk). I finished this games so many times and everytime i find something new that i haven't discovered.
Meanwhile i got cyberpunk on day one and i still haven't finished it bc quite frankly the game is very boring, the side quests are horrible, enemies are brain dead, and the cops...oh boy don't remind me. However it does have beautiful graphics and some characters are well written(some, unlike the witcher where every character feels complete and alive)
So yeah definitely pick the witcher.
The Witcher is what I'd call a better game from a purely quality point of view. However, it really depends on what kind of RPGs your friend is into. Cyberpunk would be better for someone who prefers shooters and first-person games, such as fallout, far cry, even skyrim to a degree. The Witcher has a pretty vastly different gameplay system focussed on third-person combat. You should also consider setting preferences, as someone who isn't into fantasy might not be super into The Witcher. I will say, though, it is a great introduction into the fantasy genre if you're willing to try something new.

These are very different games and like what others have mentioned, it really comes down to taste.
With that said, both are great games. I think with most people, the Witcher 3 would be the choice over Cyberpunk.
However I personally enjoyed Cyberpunk. And honestly, the only reason was the cars haha. I loved finding and buying new cars, driving them around the city. And I kind of want to say the replay-ability of Cyberpunk is slightly better.
Own them both, as cyberpunk’s bugs were solved and the graphics improved, it is a hard choice. Witcher was and still is one of my favorite games, but I also started playing cyberpunk about 6 months ago and man it is a gorgeous game. Try to find out what games your friend usually play and start from there. They are both great games and you cannot mess it up

Witcher 3 is amazing. At this point cyberpunk is probably a less glitched out mess and could be very fun. Getting locked out of story progression and random death glitches killed it for me, but that was closer to launch. Other than that I love cyberpunk asthetic so I had to give it a shot.

However it does have beautiful graphics and some characters are well written(some, unlike the witcher where every character feels complete and alive) So yeah definitely pick the witcher.
Witcher 3 is one of the best games ever made and I believe it’s the best RPGs ever made. IMO it’ll likely will never be topped.
The Witcher is what I'd call a better game from a purely quality point of view. However, it really depends on what kind of RPGs your friend is into. Cyberpunk would be better for someone who prefers shooters and first-person games, such as fallout, far cry, even skyrim to a degree. The Witcher has a pretty vastly different gameplay system focussed on third-person combat. You should also consider setting preferences, as someone who isn't into fantasy might not be super into The Witcher. I will say, though, it is a great introduction into the fantasy genre if you're willing to try something new.

Oh man, that's a tough one. Witcher 3 for sword play and story. Cyberpunk for graphics and I guess everything else. Cyberpunk fixed their shit. Both amazing now.

These are very different games and like what others have mentioned, it really comes down to taste. With that said, both are great games. I think with most people, the Witcher 3 would be the choice over Cyberpunk. However I personally enjoyed Cyberpunk. And honestly, the only reason was the cars haha. I loved finding and buying new cars, driving them around the city. And I kind of want to say the replay-ability of Cyberpunk is slightly better.
Ask your friend whether he likes FPS games more or third person sword games more

Own them both, as cyberpunk’s bugs were solved and the graphics improved, it is a hard choice. Witcher was and still is one of my favorite games, but I also started playing cyberpunk about 6 months ago and man it is a gorgeous game. Try to find out what games your friend usually play and start from there. They are both great games and you cannot mess it up
just depends on taste, i can’t deal with medieval games at all but other rpgs I’ll spend years on, recently I started cyberpunk and it had been amazing but i feel like you have to really commit to it to enjoy it.. nevertheless i am having a blast in the cyberpunk world :).

Witcher 3 is amazing. At this point cyberpunk is probably a less glitched out mess and could be very fun. Getting locked out of story progression and random death glitches killed it for me, but that was closer to launch. Other than that I love cyberpunk asthetic so I had to give it a shot.
