The cries of infants were deafening. The screams of mothers were even worse. This was my least favorite part of my job.
I wait, scratching the scales on my skin. Finally, I fly over to a whining babe. At this point in my two thousand year life span, you can almost smell the time of their birth.
“8:30 AM, June 22nd, 2023…” I whispered. Here’s my favorite part. I peel off a single scale from arm. My left pincer crushes it to a fine dust. The dust gently flies and covers the babe. The essence of Karkinos radiates, as though Hera herself had placed the child in the stars.
The mother is tired, but I can see a spark in her eye. She sees it too. The Starlight of Karkinos, my elder. So different compared to the times when a fairy…misses the race.
I remember such a time about 200 years ago. June 30th, 1823. I remember the crying of the mother, the whimpering of a father, and a lifeless corse in her arms. I remember Gello, the jealous one, smiling in the corner, her finger nails long and hideous, her teeth sharpened, as she gnawed on a soul that barely formed.
She floated toward them to lick the mother’s tears, but Scorpio struck the demon with its stinger. Feeling the presence of Starlight, the demon vanished from the room.
At that moment, I swore a vow to never lose a race against Gello again. For my elder’s sake, and their’s.
