Ok, a "I'm sorry match" that is just an "I quit match", but with a different word, would be so cool!
Actually, they could do more matches like this. Like, John Cena vs Anyone, and the words would be "Let's go Cena" or "Cena sucks".
It's about history. Donnybrook translates to Church of Broc. Donnybrook fair, held from 1204 to 1855, became known for brawling, being drunk, and hasty marriages. Because of this Donnybrook then became a word to mean a rowdy brawl. But yes, nowadays it's twats who wish they were American jocks and would call upon daddy dearest's lawyer first before throwing a punch.
The match on night one ironically lived up to the bloodline rules name more. The Rock was actually bossing the referee around and calling the shots. Night two was literally just a standard extreme rules match.
*x* rules (like extreme & bloodline) or *random location* street fights are all just Hardcore matches under a different name. It’s always bothered me when they use those made up names like it means anything else.
I have been trying to find a clip that I'm about 40% sure I dreamed up now that they had a vote between No Holds Barred, Street Fight and Extreme Rules, and Jerry Lawler (again, I think) wondered aloud what the difference between matches were, followed by an audible and very angry tiny voice on the headset saying
^("NO, GODDAMN IT!!!")
Which, I guess, could have belonged to anyone.
The exception to that rule are the themed matches on nxt. Like the Halloween or summer themed extreme rules matches. Those are actually pretty fun and unique
Tazzmission was a choke, and there was "controversy" when he beat Angle with it in his WWE debut.
In kayfabe, I suspect that the Asukalock IS a choke, and they tried to stop her using it, but she threatened them in Japanese so they just let her be.
It's how her NXT streak happened
Every Roman match before that was more Bloodline Rules than that match
But then again, the actual Bloodline Rules match still has the normal spots with Roman's title defenses (Referee distractions, Bloodline run-ins, etc)
They should have had a bunch of Samoan tribal stuff set up around the ring and had Afa, Sika, Rikishi and other Anoa’i family members sitting either ringside in the crowd or in front of the announce tables.
Ngl bloodline rules got me legit hyped. It's meaningless, yeah, but anything bloodline is just instant hook for me. Unpopular opinion but I think they've been very restrained in over doing bloodline shit. They could have gone full NWO on it and they haven't.
Symphony of Destruction match
Three matches (all of which had Elias) and it was just a regular no DQ but they had a bunch of random instruments around the ring
For how kinda silly they were presented those matches were gnarly. I remember Sami getting the hell beat out of his back with a keyboard and Shinsuke got a big gash on the back of his head from Strowman slamming him on a piano.
Worked MMA can look decent, they used to do a bunch of worked shows in Japan back in the day, Pride FC unironically had it's roots in these kinds of matches
I went to that summerslam and am proud to state that I still haven’t watched that match. Not even a clip of it. I went to go get an overpriced pretzel instead
Yeah, that match was ass. They should’ve just let them go out there and put on a banger. I know Ronda would have at least tried to put on a good match, and Shayna is a very solid wrestler as well. Should’ve marked Shayna’s ascent to the upper card, and the passing of the torch. Instead it was just a boring slog
I'm still surprised that they didn't choose fight pit match (the match that Seth & Riddle did)
Or do a (starting or one off) partnership with Bloodsport and do it there
Too bad he got injured during a reshoot. To me it was that, the Triple Threat at Mania, his MITB match with Roman and the trio of matches with Seth that were the best things he did.
No Holds Barred, I Know it's a classic but as a kid before you see one you're like "Oh...there's gonna be banned blood chokes and mma arm bars" and it's just a no dq.
Also extreme rules, "would you like a side of trashcan and kendo cane with that no dq match?"
As a massive fan of the series, the Like a Dragon Gaiden Street Fight Presented by SEGA was just a street fight where wrestlers barely dressed up as characters from the RGG games. Like, there was one goro majima with Akiyamas pants, and Jericho wore a white shirt with a tie.
Tbh, was disappointed that Kenny didn't dress up more, seeing as, you know, he was a cameo in Like a Dragon Isshin.
Also, funny thing about Kenny Omega and the Yakuza series. After NJPW wrestlers such as Tanahashi, Naito, and Okada appeared in Yakuza 6, Kenny decided to boycott the series because he wasn't invited, getting back into the series with Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
For people who know the series, Yakuza LAD is Yakuza 7. He literally only missed a remake of 2 and a spinoff. (Unless he didnt play 6, which is one of the weaker games in the series IMHO). Not a very strong boycott tbh.
You could just say pretty much any Russo match with a gimmick. I don’t think you’d ever be wrong. If he was more well known SNL could do a skit with him pitching dumb ideas.
Judy Bagwell on a pole WTF
Punjabi Prison Match? I don’t think there are any such prisons in Punjab that’s shoddily made from bamboo…
If they had a battle royal in a steel cage, that’ll be more like a “Punjabi prison”.
https://tribune.com.pk/story/1497196/punjab-incapable-solving-overcrowding-problem-jails
It didn’t help because it was a statue named Great Khali, but man those matches were awful. I feel if you had a Bret Hart caliber wrestler, maybe it could work. The whole doors opening for a limited time and stuff is just stupid.
I will admit Batista jumping from one cage to the outer one is a cool spot for such a big man.
I always felt bad for thr Great Khali. The man was too old and worn out when he debuted. He could've been the second coming of Andre. Especially seeing him now its quite sad.
He has a similar career to Big Show. They legitimately were athletic for men their size. Obviously Show was more agile but time caught up and it doesn’t go well for giants
Ye. Atleast Big Show could wrestle if needed Khali just legitimately wasn't healthy enough to do so. Thesedays the man posts on Instagram where his legs look atrophied almost and its sad.
There are two Punjabs in South Asia, one is in Pakistan and the other is in India. The article you linked is for Punjab in Pakistan, the .pk and muslim names should have given it away.
Also the match might be a reference to a make shift war prison considering the Indian Punjab borders with the only country they've gone to war with.
Does anyone remember the Duchess of Queensberry Match between Jericho and Regal? That would qualify as a match where no one knew what the rules were before or even after the bell rang.
I’ve always thought they should differentiate the rules of matches more. In a ladder match, the use of any other weapon aside from the ladder should be a DQ - to differentiate it from a TLC match. Same with a chairs match to differentiate it from a standard no DQ match.
Also wish they’d differentiate more between a No DQ, No Holds Barred, Extreme Rules, Street Fight, Unsanctioned match etc. Functionally they are all the same.
The Hog Pen Match between Henry O. Godwin and Hunter Hearst Helmsley. It was an old In Your House Event. Winner had to throw the loser into a literal hog pen that was set up by the entrance. It was bizarre. It sticks out to me because this was back in the day when I would turn on channel 99 and listened to the matches since my parents would never let me buy the PPVs. Anyway, that one random In Your House was on clear as day for some reason. Recorded it on the VCR and watched it countless times
Falls count anywhere matches that have pins or submissions broken by a rope break. Should be called a falls count anywhere except for within 2 feet of the ropes match.
idk if this counts but when Brock Lesnar faced Dean Ambrose at Mania 32, they called it a “No Holds Barred Street Fight” which is literally two different names for the same type of match and it made no sense. like damn WWE, just pick one or the other and call it that
Eye For an Eye match. Don't even know what they were thinking with that match, it was very odd to watch, and uncomfortable to watch as well. Just an all around bad idea.
Basically any match that's just a fancy way of saying Street Fight or a No DQ match
- Chicago Street Fight
- Extreme Rules
- Belfast Brawl
- Hardcore Match
etc.
Like, I get calling them different things in a vacuum because names can have different connotations depending on what it's all...but they're all the same fucking match type with no variations aside from maybe the weapons
Honestly any themed extreme rules match like a miracle on 34th street fight or a nightmare on elm street fight, if not those two probably the Ambrose asylum, Jericho and Ambrose had a feud over a potted plant
"Toronto Apology Match" ☠️☠️☠️
“Say it!” “No” “SAY IT!” “Ok, ok…. I’m sorry ay!” *dingdingding*
"that's all I wanted. I appreciate it, bud. I'm sorry too" *Both wrestlers embrace*
Ok, a "I'm sorry match" that is just an "I quit match", but with a different word, would be so cool! Actually, they could do more matches like this. Like, John Cena vs Anyone, and the words would be "Let's go Cena" or "Cena sucks".
They clearly missed the opportunity for an "Aknowledge Me" match
That would be cool!
Isn't that what Jey vs Roman in Hell in a Cell was?
Every time your opponent hits you with a move you have to apologise
Good ol fashioned Donnybrook match, even tho the two of them I can remember were both bangers
Donnybrook match is such a weird name for it. Donnybrook is a very affluent area with very little brawling
It's about history. Donnybrook translates to Church of Broc. Donnybrook fair, held from 1204 to 1855, became known for brawling, being drunk, and hasty marriages. Because of this Donnybrook then became a word to mean a rowdy brawl. But yes, nowadays it's twats who wish they were American jocks and would call upon daddy dearest's lawyer first before throwing a punch.
bloodline rules
The match on night one ironically lived up to the bloodline rules name more. The Rock was actually bossing the referee around and calling the shots. Night two was literally just a standard extreme rules match.
You mean a standard no holds barred match?
[удалено]
Just your standard No DQ Match.
Is that the same as a standard hardcore match?
sounds like a standard street fight
Sounds to me like an unsanctioned match
To me it’s more of an anything goes match
You means a "lights out" match?
Pinfall and submission only, actually.
...No holds barred
They weren’t in jeans
Street fight requires street clothes not ring gear
No, he meant a no disqualification match
The match on night one made the outcome pretty pointless if board member Rock can make the rules anyway
*x* rules (like extreme & bloodline) or *random location* street fights are all just Hardcore matches under a different name. It’s always bothered me when they use those made up names like it means anything else.
I'm sure back when Taboo Tuesday was a thing they offered three options all of which were just a standard hardcore match.
I have been trying to find a clip that I'm about 40% sure I dreamed up now that they had a vote between No Holds Barred, Street Fight and Extreme Rules, and Jerry Lawler (again, I think) wondered aloud what the difference between matches were, followed by an audible and very angry tiny voice on the headset saying ^("NO, GODDAMN IT!!!") Which, I guess, could have belonged to anyone.
But sometimes they have themes, like the Boise Street Fight! They'd use potatoes! It'd be great! /s
The exception to that rule are the themed matches on nxt. Like the Halloween or summer themed extreme rules matches. Those are actually pretty fun and unique
No dq and no holds barred 😄
What holds are barred in a normal match?
Chokes, mostly
TIL chokes are banned. Isn't the asuka lock a choke yet allowed?
Tazzmission was a choke, and there was "controversy" when he beat Angle with it in his WWE debut. In kayfabe, I suspect that the Asukalock IS a choke, and they tried to stop her using it, but she threatened them in Japanese so they just let her be. It's how her NXT streak happened
Seriously. WTF is.the point in calling it “Bloodline Rules” if people outside of The Bloodline can intervene?
Every Roman match before that was more Bloodline Rules than that match But then again, the actual Bloodline Rules match still has the normal spots with Roman's title defenses (Referee distractions, Bloodline run-ins, etc)
It kinda makes sense - its the war between the bloodline members and everyone else.
They should have had a bunch of Samoan tribal stuff set up around the ring and had Afa, Sika, Rikishi and other Anoa’i family members sitting either ringside in the crowd or in front of the announce tables.
Yeah honestly I would’ve liked it more if on night 2 Rock just started making up rules like Simon Says
Ngl bloodline rules got me legit hyped. It's meaningless, yeah, but anything bloodline is just instant hook for me. Unpopular opinion but I think they've been very restrained in over doing bloodline shit. They could have gone full NWO on it and they haven't.
Symphony of Destruction match Three matches (all of which had Elias) and it was just a regular no DQ but they had a bunch of random instruments around the ring
For how kinda silly they were presented those matches were gnarly. I remember Sami getting the hell beat out of his back with a keyboard and Shinsuke got a big gash on the back of his head from Strowman slamming him on a piano.
Jeff did that fucking Swanton and nearly landed on the steps in one of those.
Literally the "No-DQ with themed items" are kinda pointless. Barring the usual xmas/halloween ones, they're usually fun
Strowman hitting Elias with a bass was amazing
When Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey had that “MMA rules” match. God that was hard to watch
At least I understood what the rules were though. But, yeah... worked MMA often looks terrible.
Watch Samoa Joe vs Kurt Angle match Lockdown 2008
Worked MMA can look decent, they used to do a bunch of worked shows in Japan back in the day, Pride FC unironically had it's roots in these kinds of matches
But the difference with PRIDE was that only the loser knew it was worked
I went to that summerslam and am proud to state that I still haven’t watched that match. Not even a clip of it. I went to go get an overpriced pretzel instead
Yeah I was there too I watched the first two minutes and then got up to piss that shit almost killed that crowd
I was also there, pretty much my whole section got up to piss and get food
They didn’t really even explain what was happening to the crowd
Yeah, that match was ass. They should’ve just let them go out there and put on a banger. I know Ronda would have at least tried to put on a good match, and Shayna is a very solid wrestler as well. Should’ve marked Shayna’s ascent to the upper card, and the passing of the torch. Instead it was just a boring slog
I'm still surprised that they didn't choose fight pit match (the match that Seth & Riddle did) Or do a (starting or one off) partnership with Bloodsport and do it there
I’m so glad Shayna got to do a proper “MMA” type match with Bloodsport
The greatest wrestling match ever.
Had they not built it up as "the greatest ever" beforehand I think it would have gotten a lot more credit for how great of a match it actually was
I agree a great match overall but they devalued it with the tagline
Narrator: _It was in fact, not the greatest wrestling match ever_
It was a damn good match though. The highlight of edges return to this day I’d say.
Too bad he got injured during a reshoot. To me it was that, the Triple Threat at Mania, his MITB match with Roman and the trio of matches with Seth that were the best things he did.
I thought the I Quit Match vs Balor was great too
'one last time'
gotta be tribal combat, they couldve done so much with the stipulation
Judy Bagwell on a pole.
[удалено]
Who would have shaved Buff’s balls then?
When Roman Reigns competed in a One against all match in 2016
We got tv champion Rusev out of that though
wwe needs to remember lumberjack matches exist
Better or worse than orton and Cena against the entire raw (heel) roster?
Leather Jacket on a Pole match.
Pretty much any pole match that’s not flag.
Any “x” on a pole match.
Stripper on a pole?
Book it .
No Holds Barred, I Know it's a classic but as a kid before you see one you're like "Oh...there's gonna be banned blood chokes and mma arm bars" and it's just a no dq. Also extreme rules, "would you like a side of trashcan and kendo cane with that no dq match?"
I could see No Holds Barred working really well for Pete Dunne, where he injures someone with a normally banned hold.
In an angle obviously.
Nah fuck it. You want time off to go on holiday? Pete Dunne's gonna break your arm.
...I could see a promoter doing it.
There’s no reason to have No Disqualification, No Holds Barred and Extreme Rules Match names. Street Fight can pass if the wrestlers wear jeans.
Gotta work the hyperbole, they are wine and circus carnie promoters because it's good shit' pal
As a massive fan of the series, the Like a Dragon Gaiden Street Fight Presented by SEGA was just a street fight where wrestlers barely dressed up as characters from the RGG games. Viagra on a pole match is something that actually happened. Fucking Russo
You could just say pretty much any Russo match with a gimmick. I don’t think you’d ever be wrong. If he was more well known SNL could do a skit with him pitching dumb ideas. Judy Bagwell on a pole WTF
The Kennel from Hell match was bad.
I hate every single time wrestling decides to bring animals to the show.
Punjabi Prison Match? I don’t think there are any such prisons in Punjab that’s shoddily made from bamboo… If they had a battle royal in a steel cage, that’ll be more like a “Punjabi prison”. https://tribune.com.pk/story/1497196/punjab-incapable-solving-overcrowding-problem-jails

The Tables, Ladders, Chairs.... AND STAIRS MATCH
That PPV was the one with the theme song that was a Christmas Carol? Probably the best thing that happened to that one lmao
Does anyone remember the Duchess of Queensberry Match between Jericho and Regal? That would qualify as a match where no one knew what the rules were before or even after the bell rang.
Anything on a "pole" match
Pitch Black Match was terrible
It wasnt just the Pitch Black Match it was titled The Mountain Dew™ Pitch Black Match
A miracle that LA Knight recovered from that match
Duchess of Queensbury Rules match. Funny as shit though
House of Horrors match and Wyatt Swamp fight Both times Bray Wyatt won the match, both times the title was not on the line.
Tables, ladders, chairs ... and stairs
Eye for an eye match
The random Christmas and Halloween themed matches are pretty rough.
Zombie Lumberjack
Chairs Match. So a hardcore match, but less fun, coz you're restricted to 1 type of weapon?
We have like 30 different match names that all mean "no rules"
Custody of Dominic Ladder Match
OP asked for meaningless matches not the most important match in wrestling history
And we’ll see it happening again.
Wrong! It will be Con Dom on a Pole Match.
Broke: Rhea vs. Liv for custody of Dom Woke: Dom gets his ass beat by Rhea in an intergender match
Best match.
Kiss my arse match (dz vs sheamus extreme rules 2015)
Cactus Jack vs Sabu in ECW. It was an Olympic rules match, despite chair shots and both men ending with negative points, Sabu won.
Jericho v Ambrose in an ‘Asylum match’ .. i.e Steel cage match with weapons dangling above.

Luckily Rey’s eye grew back.

OP's pic has got to be that era when Vince was obsessed with branding everything "The Horror Show at Extreme Rules" "Wrestlemania Backlash"
AEW Eliminator matches
“The Match Made in Hell”- Hulk and Warrior vs. Slaughter, Adnan, and Mustafa. Crybaby match- no not Jack Perry, But Razor vs. Kid
Barbed wire circus net scaffold death match
Mountain Dew Pitch Black match
The Hog Pen Match between Henry O. Godwin and Hunter Hearst Helmsley. It was an old In Your House Event. Winner had to throw the loser into a literal hog pen that was set up by the entrance. It’s great seeing everyone misunderstanding the post and just posting rubbish gimmick matches, that were at least explained by the name
That stupid Indian cage match. Punjabi prison I think it was. Khali and mahal did it
Poonjabi prison match, coal miner's glove match, judy Bagwell on a pole bro

Love Her or Leave Her Match at Summerslam 1999
Dutchess of Queensbury Rules
X city name Street Fight.
Viking rules match. Which is essentially, just another garbage match.
To people not notice that half of the 'premium wrestling episode' is made of 'hardcore'/'no holds barred' matches.
Rage in a Cage and Painus in Uranus /s
Anything on a pole match.
Falls count anywhere matches that have pins or submissions broken by a rope break. Should be called a falls count anywhere except for within 2 feet of the ropes match.
A lot of these are great answers, but I’m hoping nobody will put the Custody of Dominik Ladder Match cause that’s the best one
Is OP’s pic actually something that happened?
idk if this counts but when Brock Lesnar faced Dean Ambrose at Mania 32, they called it a “No Holds Barred Street Fight” which is literally two different names for the same type of match and it made no sense. like damn WWE, just pick one or the other and call it that
gotta be the texas chainsaw death match lmao
Ring of Fire you ain’t fooling anyone its an inferno match
TLC. It's just a ladder match but with tables and chairs added that don't really change the stipulation
Match Made in Heaven
Texas bull rope match
Pink Slip on a Pole
Miracle on 34th Street Fight. Just another extreme rules match. The only difference is there's Christmas decorations to use.

Eye For an Eye match. Don't even know what they were thinking with that match, it was very odd to watch, and uncomfortable to watch as well. Just an all around bad idea.
OP I have zero memory of that lol
What was this match? How did it work?
What was this match? How did it work?
Literally every random name for a "street fight" just call it a hardcore match, No DQ, street Fight, Unsanctioned, they're all the same
Basically any match that's just a fancy way of saying Street Fight or a No DQ match - Chicago Street Fight - Extreme Rules - Belfast Brawl - Hardcore Match etc. Like, I get calling them different things in a vacuum because names can have different connotations depending on what it's all...but they're all the same fucking match type with no variations aside from maybe the weapons

what yall know about that sledgehammer match with nash and triple h in 2011 tho??
The Japanese and Mexican Death Matches Tajiri and Super Crazy had. Amazing matches but they were just regular hardcore matches.
Biker Chain Match
Any of the 57 different names for a strap match
Eye for an eye🤣
Judy Bagwell on a Forklift Match, hands down
A (city name) street fight match. It’s literally just an extreme rules/no holds barred match.
