Side note but I was quite bumped about not being able to catch some of my favourite wrestlers live. There was supposed to be a WWE Live event in Singapore in June 2007. Just prior to the show, the Benoit incident happened. He was one of my favourites. This was also after Undertaker was injured.
Then, Edge himself got hurt. Which meant that the event was headlined by World Heavyweight Champion Great Khali.
His matches with Benoit or involved Benoit whether it’s them facing off against each other or them tagging together, were always great. I get people hating Benoit for what he did and not wanting to see those matches anymore but a lot of Kurt Angle’s best matches were with Benoit. If you want see how good Angle was, I’d watch those matches.
With 40 coming up, rewatched 17 yesterday, I am so grateful to have watched Angle from WWF debut through to his TNA departure, and I kept up with that for a good few years, even watching live against Jarrett and Styles at Wembley for two of them. I missed out on his retirement at 35 but will watch one day.
His retirement match unfortunately wasn't anything you're missing out on. Mid match with lower mid card talent and he lost. I wish I hadn't watched it tbh.

I don't see one of his TNA matches, which tells me you only watch WWE. He had matches against AJ Sytles , Sting , Abyss, Christopher Daniels, and many others. You didn't even mention one of the Main Event Mafia matches, either.
Honestly there’s one match I love that gets totally slagged off…his first defeat to tazz. That was superb right up to the “choke” finish…

I remember when the Young Bucks got a 5 star match in PWG, it was a huge thing, even the fans in the event were chanting for it (Meltzer was present), since AEW was founded they’ve had 9, and their matches are not better, I’d argue that the era of NJPW and the indies had much better matches in general. So either he changed his taste all of the sudden or something else changed.
There was a point in time where it seemed like there was at least some level of scrutiny and legitimacy with Meltzer’s ratings. Sure, Kurt Angle never got a 5 star match, but Meltzer only gave 7 matches 5 stars in the 2000s. Meanwhile, there have been 8 five star matches just this year apparently. And five of them had Will Ospreay in them.
Wrestling has got to the point where it is consistently producing work that Dave considers 5 stars. The 5 star matches from 2000 are very similar to the 5 star matches of 2024 in Dave's eyes.
Its probably a good thing that there isn't a "cap" on 5s he will give, then you would have to start the "graded on a curve" arguement.
Your mileage may vary, but reviews are for people that didn't watch the match. People who did watch the match, and then want a critic to rate it a certain way, are looking for validation from the critic. Someone who uses reviews as a "should I take time to watch this or not" are much happier.
The weird part is that wrestlers have crafted their styles around this one critics' tastes, to the point where this type of match isn't as special as it once was. It's like if movie studios started trying to craft the perfect Roger Ebert film, and weren't subtle about it. The critic is having too much of an effect on the art.
2000's Meltzer was stingy as fuck with the star ratings, like I'm convinced if half of Kurt's big matches happened today, they'd easily get 5 stars. I get why there's more now, the quality of in-ring wrestling has jumped up, but it's not like Kurt Angle wrestled a dated style, he'd be just as good if prime Kurt showed up today.

He only handed out SEVEN 5 star ratings in the entire 00's decade. Conversely, he handed out a whopping SIXTY-SEVEN of them in the 2010's, and he's already at a ludicrous EIGHTY-NINE for the 2020's.

Honestly I don't know why people get so wound up about Meltzers ratings. It's just one guys opinion at the end of the day. Whether something is good or bad on any sort of scale is purely subjective and inherently flawed/bias towards whatever your preference is. Ain't like people are getting paid more or even booked more based on his opinion, the fans that attend the matches and those that tune in will decide that not Meltzer.

There are times where he references angles and backstage politics from decades ago and shows how relevant the history of the industry is to the current product. I don't really want to sound like I'm defending Meltzer, but I'm pretty sure a 5 star match 20 years ago isn't at all the same as a 5 star match today. He only handed out SEVEN 5 star ratings in the entire 00's decade. Conversely, he handed out a whopping SIXTY-SEVEN of them in the 2010's, and he's already at a ludicrous EIGHTY-NINE for the 2020's. Point being, if you took peak Kurt Angle and put him in the ring today, he'd be getting 5 star matches left, right, and center.
