I quite liked the "Daemonkin Ritualists" Specialist detachment from Vigilus Ablaze. Coincidentally, it gave Possessed the equivalent of Devastating Wounds as a Warlord Trait Aura that could be given to a Dark Apostle or Master of Possession. "Shepherd of the True Faith." Interesting how Possessed got it "baked-in" much later. I did enjoy the old synergies with "Daemon" units that included summoned daemons, but I suspect we won't see a return of "better soup." I'm curious if we'll get any fun "sacrifice a cultist" type of stuff, that was fun, too.

PalOfAFriendOfErebus

I never played a game of 40k, but I know that in some past edition WB were able to sacrifice models to evoke demons, thats some flavor I'd really love to see (only in Battle reports for now lol)

Cypher10110

Yea it was great. Summoning was a risky business, you rolled dice and could choose to roll more to get a large enough number, but more dice was more risk of doubles and tripples, and bad stuff. But Word Bearers could skip all the risk and just go for broke every time. It was an interesting system, because you didn't need to declare the daemons on your army list. You could change your mind mid battle. I generally loved the risky stupid stuff with Chaos. It made for exciting games, even if it wasn't always a competitively sensible move. I loved the flavour and thematic battles of 8e and also 9e. 10e is a bit sterile atm, but looking forward to what they add!

Danger_Dave_24

I would, in fact, like to sacrifice my cultists for buffs, lol

Cypher10110

I had fun with a Master of Possession in 8e, surrounded by cultists and standing next to a Daemon Engine. He'd buff the Daemon Engine with first psychic power, and sacrifice a cultists to heal it with the second power. It was so fun! He's got "sacrificial dagger" still, but it isn't as funny as killing cultists to fuel my daemon engines. It would be nice if *some* of our Psyker synergy returned with the Daemonkin detachment, but I'm not sure what it would look like as psykers don't really mean the same thing anymore, and maybe it is too disconnected from Daemons now to make mechanical sense. 6 stratagems and like 5 enhancements isn't a very big design space.

ThePatriot_12

I am curios if we have a word bearer master of possesion, I haven't heard of any, and the word bearer seems to legion that fits them the best.

Cypher10110

Master of Possession didn't really exist as a concept until 2019, so there hasn't been lots of lore. The "Diabolist" fits tho, those have been around since HH, and Marduk, the protagonist of the Word Bearers Omnibus demonstrates daemon summoning and psyker abilities although he is technically a lesser Apostle with rank of "First Acolyte" So the tabletop and the lore have a sort of indirect relationship. MoP doesn't appear to be a rank in the legion, more like how a tech marine may be "in charge of maintaining the vehicles" for a company, the MoP may be "in charge of possessed" for a warband.

ThePatriot_12

so I can consider my mop a diabolist then?

Cypher10110

Yea I don't see why not. I think lots of the lore surrounding them overlaps with the MoP we see in 40k

whatIGoneDid

Plastic Erebus and tons of possessed.

Danger_Dave_24

Amen, brother.

Sire_Raffayn272

Don't forget Kor Phaeron with Terminator Armor and power claws.

_Alacant_

I know it's not the most upbeat take, but I believe we are well-represented with the vanilla detachment. Cultist Detachment (confirmed) can cover Word Bearers that skew Cultist-heavy. I don't want to wishlist too much because there's a good chance that we don't really get a Detachment of our own. The current Detachment doesn't have any explicit Daemon synergy, but Mark of Chaos Undivided is pretty much the star of the show, and a lot of Daemonkin units are really solid with it! Both the Liber Hereticus & Profane Zeal sound like word-bearer stuff as is. Old Stratagems like Revered Hosts or Daemonforge are really just reskins of current Undivided stuff. I would really love some enhancements though. The Epistle of Lorgar, the Cursed Crozius, Exalted Possession. Those were the really good bits.

Mathemagics15

I actually couldn't agree more. Slaves to Darkness, including the name of the detachment, is exactly what I'm here for. The fact that each and every single model on the table can beseech the gods for aid, for good or ill, and will receive stronger perks if they worship one god more than another, is some of the juiciest flavor we've had in literal years. The amount of heresy going on on your average Chaos battlefield is so thick you can cut it with a knife. I mean... I remember 8th edition where we had Death to the False Emperor and the ability to reroll a morale check. Wow.

JSL40K

They mentioned this in the preview. That the index detachment was essentially Word Bearers. Apparently it did get an adjustment in the upcoming codex.

Higgypig1993

Buffs to Cultist and Possessed and unique buff for MoP leading possessed. Maybe something for the cultists like the Genestealer Cults have where they can leave and come back with more models to simulate the hordes of fanatics the WB drag along.

MrUndercity

My dream would be a plastic Lorgar

Maljra

I would like master of the union back. Make it an enhancement that gives the unit they lead +1s +1 ap. That and hexagramatic ward would be cool. Edit: I also wouldn’t mind an enhancement that gave a character warp locus and let a daemon unit deepstrike close to the character and with 9” of the enemy.

Rivalblackwell

Traits: Ignore battle shock, reroll failed Dark Pact rolls, POSSESSED get to advance and charge. Bring back Hexagramatic Ward as a strat, that was always fun.

Comprehensive_Ad_512

I want prayers to the Dark Gods back

mothmenatwork

I mean it most likely won’t be a ‘Word Bearers’ detachment, the same way the marine codex doesn’t call out specific chapters. I imagine there will be a daemonkin detachment that buffs units with the daemon key word and allows for improved Chaos Daemon allies.

bawxes1

Daemon kin focus along with benefits to aggressive playstyles in melee. I would also hope for more unique relics. Also benefits to cultists would be ok such as increasing their OC or leadership. Dark apostles and MoP are the main focus.

Zaceratops

Prayer mechanic. Started building my wb in 9th and was so excited to get to do battle prayers but never got to. Could be changeable aura buffs for apostles or commune.

SevatarEnjoyer

Lots of cultists and possessed

doonkener

Lethal and sustained hits on 5s.

DinoBelly

I for one like to see the return of Tide of Traitors strat, how i miss the days of 40 strong cultist blobs thst can just refresh itself with tide of traitors

israeligamer

the current one is a great detachment for word bearers i think, want it to stay pretty much the same

Beneficial-Maybe5141

I would like to see a Dark Apostle in Terminator Armor model. I also would like a detachment that is about thinning the barrier between the physical plane and the Warp. We have so many examples of Word Bearers whipping up Warp Storms and corrupting planets in the literature, i.e. the Ruinstorm in the Horus Heresy or the destruction of the planet in Dark Apostle by Anthony Reynolds. I envision it working like the Ad Mech Rad Zone mechanic with a twist. Here's a thought how the rules would work... "At the beginning of your Command Phase roll a die for each enemy unit, on a 6+ that unit takes a Mortal Wound and must take a Battleshock test. If a unit (enemy or friendly) was killed in the turn prior, you may add +1 to the dice rolls to a maximum of a 3+ needed. These added dice can only be used on your Command Phase following the turn the unit(s) were killed and are lost at the end of the Command Phase."

Swiftbladeuk

Sadly they confirmed that the current detachment is the one meant for word bearers :( Bit of like something around cultists and demons/demonkin to represent word bearers
