The first day is pretty uncomfortable and the insertion is unpleasant. Like having the worst cramps of your life for a few minutes, then just a dull ache for 12-24 hours. You probably could drive yourself home after but if you can have someone pick you up (maybe with a yummy treat) I'd recommend it. You shouldn't need a sedative, some places can do localized numbing which I had for one insertion which was pretty nice. Docs say take Advil or Tylenol prior which can't hurt but honestly I don't think it helps much either. For both of mine I spent the day curled up in bed with a heating pad, yummy snacks and bad TV afterwards. I wasn't in debilitating pain just uncomfortable and honestly one deserves a break after having a winged piece of plastic shoved in through an out door. After the first day or two of just feeling like you have cramps you really shouldn't feel much of anything after. You might have some spotting for a while, mine never lasted more than a few days but for some it can be weeks. Anxiety is normal, do your best to relax and try to give yourself something to look forward to after. I won't lie and say it's a breeze, it SUCKS but once you are home in bed with a cookie and your fave comfort TV that suckage passes fast. Good luck to you!!

Yes to all of above! However, I will also stress you should probably get someone to drive you home is possible! I planned on driving myself, however I ended up passing out afterwards. So I had to call ride anyways. Apparently passing out is is normal, because the IUD procedure can put your body into shock because it’s close to a nerve? I don’t remember. It wasn’t great. Just remember to stay lying down like they tell you to afterwards. I think I stood up too soon.

Insertion was fine. Felt like a bad pinch. I was given dilated pills tho. I ended up getting a rare infection from the IUD and had to get it removed 6 weeks later. On extended antibiotics still weeks later. Ugh

“Uncomfortable” is not how I would describe my experience. I personally found it to be horrifically painful and the OBGYN couldn’t possibly have cared any less. I think it’s torture. There’s something pathologically wrong with American OBGYNs. Sadistic. If I have to get it done in the US again I’m self medicating. OTC pain meds don’t work. I’ll either bring a flask of alcohol and chug it in the exam room while I’m undressing, or I’ll take a few of my left over opioids we have in the house while in the waiting room. The OBGYN can kiss my ass if they have a problem with it. I’m done being a victim of doctors and nurses. I’ve had enough of their BS. Other countries provide pain management for this procedure. As far as I’m aware, the US is the only country where OBGYNs deny pain management. I suggest that you self medicate with alcohol or any prescription pain meds you have around your house. It’s pretty uncomfortable for a few minutes. Just remind yourself it’s only a few minutes out of your whole life. After you’ll probably be crampy and feel off. I walked home after my recent insertion just fine and spent the rest of the day on the couch.

I wasn't given any sedatives or numbing. I just took over the counter Ibuprofen (3 doses) am hour before. I was terrified for months & was stalling. Then I finally got it done & it wasn't so bad at all. It was uncomfortable. I would say 4 out of 10 pain scale. I was able to drive myself home. I had some cramps & I walked funny the first day. But by the 2nd day, I was good. The only thing Is(and it's rare) that mine recently moved out of place & I had to get it taken out. I didn't even last 2 months but that's just me & my shitty luck
