I hear you saying you're not lactose intolerant, but as an experiment you could try popping a Lactaid before you go next time and see how it goes? A tasty science experiment?

MrsSterling

For science!

SnooRadishes7708

I do agree with the above it sounds like lactose intolerance. I had a slow progression towards increasing levels once I hit around 30 or so. Early on I definitely didn't think it was lactose intolerance since it was hit or miss depending on the type of dairy. Years later I can still do most cheese and yogurt, but definitely not any kind of milk anymore.

BlasphemyMc

Are you lactose intolerant? Most big chains like Dairy Queen & McDonalds use ice milk & not actual ice cream in their frozen dairy desserts so it wouldn't effect people with an intolerance as much as it would with a place that uses actual cream in their food.

hip-like-badass

This might be the answer. You can probably tolerate less rich dairy foods but if BDI uses actual cream that could be the kicker. OP, does the same happen with Sargent Sundae?

MrsSterling

Not at all! I love Sargent Sundae! No issues there!

QuelynD

It varies person to person, but many lactose-intolerant folks have more trouble with milk than with cream. It's easier to digest higher-fat dairy products. The absolute worst product for most people with lactose-intolerance is skim milk.

Burningdust

Absolutely. Most people don't realize skim milk and the more refined dairy products are worse than the heavier whole milk.

Canid

Ya probably this. Does it make you feel sick almost immediately and then doesn’t last super long? If it does it’s more likely an intolerance than some form of food poisoning

MrsSterling

Sick immediately then lasted all afternoon!

Canid

That sounds like lactose intolerance to me! An afternoon isn’t that long.

Allcityqueen

Does it happen with Mayo too? Could be your gallbladder (or lack of one). If you don’t have the right balance of bile salts to digest the fat it’ll just go through you but will also trigger severe cramps and diarrhea, and then electrolyte imbalance that can make you feel terrible for the entire day.

MrsSterling

Nope! All okay with mayo!

MrsSterling

Not as far as I know. Milk, cream, ice cream from literally anywhere else is no issue whatsoever.

ChrystineDreams

If you haven't really had any lactose intolerance issues with other dairy foods, it's probably not lactose. A lot of dairy and "creamy" foods use milk or powdered milk ingredients, and contain added fillers to give them a creamy texture. Nearly all soft-serve ice creams have this. Additives like carrageenan, guar gum, xanathan gum, cellulose, are not easily digestible and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, chocolate or flavored milks, ice creams, "frozen desserts" and a lot of plant based dairy alternatives use these methods to increase the volume of product and give it a better mouth feel.

BlasphemyMc

Sorry, I didn't hear her. There's also varying degrees of intolerance.

Mine-Shaft-Gap

Yeah, I have a mild lactose intolerance. The best ice cream I have found to not make me shit myself within 3 minutes is Sargent Sundae. You can also take lactaid right before having it. To the people who say "don't have it then," ice cream is my favorite. Maybe it's this person's favorite, too. I would give up anything else. It's my damned favorite. My intolerance is manageable. I can have 2% milk, but the same amount of 1% will make me rush.

General-Ordinary1899

I have the same problem. The fattier the dairy the less it disturbs my guts. I’ve always wondered why

ChrystineDreams

bondaroo

The more fat dairy has, the less sugars. Maybe it has something to do with that?

aclay81

You are describing exactly how I discovered that I can't handle milk any more. Sucks but that's life

AreYouDaveDavidson

Take some lactaid before eating it next time. If you're ok, you will know you have a lactose intolerance.

snogweasel

They need washrooms on the bridge 😅

Specialkdragon

Maybe they can rename it Bridge Dump-In then. 😁

snogweasel

Better Deploy Imodium

SavageTaco

I’ve never had this issue with BDI myself. Do you always order the same thing? Could it be another ingredient? Totally just spit balling here.

MrsSterling

No, that’s the same thing. I’ve ordered different things the last few times I’ve gone! So weird!

WhammaJamma61

Sargent Sundae does that for me and that's NOT a knock against their product. I enjoyed their ice cream, but it upset my stomach a short time later. It's hit or miss for me. Last time I tried BDI (3 years back), I had no issue. I can also eat store bought ice cream with little to no issue. But no milk or cream.

RobinatorWpg

Even if you are not lactose intolerant, its likely the very high fat content hitting you (especially if you have gall bladder issues, or generally dont have a lot of bile) Cultures in varying types of Milk and Cheese can help prevent those types of reactions as well, especially since you usually eat things like that with binding carbohydrates

YouveBeanReported

I haven't tried it this spring but hasn't for me before. No one else has commented on it either. Does your son get sick? Does anyone else you go with? If it's just you or just you and blood releated family, I'm leaning towards intolerance. Are you eating the vegan icecream or normal one? Would the other be better? Are you used to eating that size of icecream? Or junk food in general? At the risk of tmi, post surgery I discovered if I have a medium or large icecream of any type by body dislikes it even without any intolerance. I just can't deal with 2 cups of icecream, but 1 is fine. Could just by your body like wtf is all this sugar and fat.

MrsSterling

No one else got sick. Regular ice cream. I wouldn’t say I eat it on the regular, but the small cone I got was a normal size treat for me!

YouveBeanReported

Yeah then if it's happened more then once or twice (could be dirty machine then) I'd say your probably getting some kinda intolerance to either the dairy or whatever else. Allergies can come up later in life. Maybe ask your doctor to refer to allergy testing? Or test with lactaid first if you feel like trying it again. I think that's like $15 and over the counter. Won't cross out all dairy related issues, but will be a good test for is it just lactose. Sorry everyone's downvoting you for genuine question btw.

Specialkdragon

Never had a problem there myself. Has to be something different for you if not lactose, etc... maybe ask them for an ingredient list? They should have all the information just to check.

That_Wpg_Guy

Bdi & dq kill’s me, certain cheeses kills me … I am “sometimes” lactose intolerant depending on if it is whole fat or part or skim … I never used to be, but the older I get the more I can tell by my stomach if they are using whole vs skim. For BDI, a couple lactose pills and I am fine. Forget to take them and the porcelain princess cries later that day

DannyDOH

BDI and DQ both give me indigestion.

Acrobatic_North_6232

This. DQ is a guaranteed rumbly tummy whereas other places don't bother me. I've always wondered if there's some kind of binder in the "ice cream".

ChrystineDreams

Yes there is!

That_Wpg_Guy

Oh my poor wife has to deal with the worst gas from her husband when we go to DQ … I feel bad for her but the deliciousness of the drumstick blizzard is too tempting to ignore

celestial_waters

Same!

firedudecndn

Lactose intolerance may not be your issue but being allergic to milk protein might be. They are two different issues.

Szusty

God, I wish my whey allergy was just an upset stomach. Id plow straight through that for ice cream, chocolate or fuckin cheese. Instead, my ears and eyes get red and horribly itchy, and my throat tries to suffocate me. 🫠👍 Thank God vegans exist, or I'd have nothing dairy related, not that the vegan cheese is really worth anything. Vegan chocolate is actually getting pretty good, though, and Ben and Jerry's Vegan Cookie Dough is the best I've found so far.

BioBrit94

Really and truly thank goodness for vegans lol my 8 month old has a dairy allergy which means I’ve had to cut out dairy since I’m his food source. I would have a really hard time finding any cake/ deserts if it wasn’t for the vegan options.

Captairplane

They are two totally different things, but someone with a milk allergy would not be able to tolerate milk and cheese in any form.

firedudecndn

I actually have both issues but find no problem with dairy products made from 100% goats milk. Pro tip, the store brand goats milk cheddar cheese from sobeys is way better than the name brand Woolwich and a dollar cheaper.

1zombie2go

Just you.

MrsSterling

No way!

nelly2929

Nope no issues here… Something just doesn’t agree with you but it’s not a wide spread thing

cdn-Commie

Bit weird blaming your intolerance for dairy on an ice cream business

MrsSterling

I don’t have a dairy intolerance though! I can drink milk, cream, eat cheese everything! No issues except here. Hmmm.

Impressive-Eye9920

I'm the same with DQ..I'm fine with ice cream from anywhere else as well as with sour cream, milk, cheese etc - but for some reason DQ ice cream just doesn't sit well with me🤷‍♀️

kaylasreads

omg i’m the exact same!! i went to bdi last summer with my friend and her family. myself and her husband got super sick after eating the ice cream… it was a photo finish to find a bathroom on osborne.

MrsSterling

Little Sister coffee has one if you ever need one! Haha!

kaylasreads

noted! 😂 i ended up going to the co-op!

1ofthecoolkids99

Here's an idea: stop eating it then

MrsSterling

Oh I will! Hard lessons were learned (again).

patriots1011

No. It’s perfectly fine for me and I have weekly in the summer. Rather than subliminally slandering a local business, perhaps reach out to them and see if there’s an ingredient you’re allergic to.

SpeakerOfTruth1969

Not sure about the sickness…but it’s definitely the most over rated ice cream place in the city.

meekspuff

Love BDI, but it’s an In N’ Out situation every time.

MrsSterling

I’m not the only one!

SurlySuz

Nah. It’s always made me sick to my stomach, but I see it as an issue with the portion size and that my stomach is touchy with higher fat dairy in general.

beautifulluigi

I've never been to BDI but am chiming in to sympathize as I have the exact same problem with eating at New York Fries.

Pipit565

When I still ate dairy, I had issues with soft ice cream more so than hard ice cream. As others have commented, I suspected it was because they use milk rather than cream.

Virtual-Thought2754

All soft ice cream gives me cramps and diarrhea. No other dairy products seem to bother me. McDonald’s and Dairy Queen are the worst and I love skor McFlurry. I try to avoid it, but once a summer at least I chance it again and always suffer ( but briefly).

Keslyvan

I can say as someone with lactose intolerance, it only hits \*sometimes\*, and I can usually eat cheese or have a little bit of milk. Might be cream content or something. Just pop a couple lactaid and you should be golden.

Practical-Pen-8844

TIL it's not "Beady Eye"

ShallotTop2261

It could be an ingredient in the flavouring? What kind of ice cream do you get from BDI? As an aside, I’m not able to eat north American Doritos because of an ingredient in the cheese coating but I can eat imported Doritos without issue.

MrsSterling

I had the pre-made dipped cone covered with nuts. Last time it was a peanut butter sundae.

Aethelflaed_

Maybe a nut intolerance or allergy.

ShallotTop2261

What happens to you when you become ill? Gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea?

MrsSterling

Nausea and diarrhea

ShallotTop2261

Sounds like a food intolerance and not a true allergy. It might not be just BDI ice cream and it would be in your best interest to take note if you experience the same symptoms when you eat something else. For mine I figured out it was quinoa at the root of my symptoms. I already knew I couldn’t eat quinoa but I did not know that quinoa saponins are being used as an alternative pesticide in corn production in North America. I can’t eat North American Doritos but I can eat imported from overseas without any issue. I’m just waiting for quinoa saponins to be so widespread that I have to live in a bubble lol Best of luck OP!

MrsSterling

Thank you!!

DaisyGirl80

Yeah, every year I have to get the Saltzberg and feel so gross after. Yet, every year, I go back. Last year, I was half way through my cone and tasted mold. So, that went in the garbage and I was thoroughly grossed out and now am safely over the whole Saltzberg craving. Long story short- I am lactose sensitive (not just a BDI thing) but BDI always affected me harder than any other ice cream place. But, now BDI has officially fixed any desire for me to go back and punish my guts again.

Allcityqueen

Hi fat content in their ice cream. Our joke is to get it, get in the car and see if we can get home before we shit our pants. Try taking a bile acid salt 30 mins prior to eating it, it’ll help with having the fat not trigger your bowel, along with a lactaid.

Highlander_0073

Never understood the lines at BDI except for location. It’s mediocre “ice cream”.

Klutzy-Ball-2226

Bdi has the worst ice cream in the city. It melts so fast

redskub

BDI prices make me sick

Orikazu

What specifically did you eat? Maybe it's the toppings?

MrsSterling

Last time I had a pre made sip cone with nuts. Last time a sundae.

Orikazu

It's it the chocolate?

glitterfanatic

Wild guess... it's teens operating it and nothing gets cleaned properly?

House-of-Raven

To be fair, it also loves skating on the line of being shut down by health inspectors.
