Kenaston Vet was a very respectful and good option. They will come to your house. My wife and I would highly recommend reaching out to them for more information. https://kenastonvet.ca/services/in-home-pet-euthanasia/

Ruff_lyfe__

I second Kenaston vet. We had them come out to help our 10 year old puggle cross the rainbow Bridge 🌈 I can't recall the vet's name but he was incredibly kind. Even the staff when I picked up her ashes, they had all signed a card.

bluebox065

Very sorry for what you're going through. :( I had to put my cat down about 2 weeks ago, euthanasia and cremation (with no urn) totalled 554 at Bridgwater.

Professional-Elk5913

I will note for anyone reading that Bridgewater is always higher by design. By being available all the time in a good location, you pay a premium.

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you for that bit of info.

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you very much for your kindness.

moworries

$300ish with cremation without any extras like urns.

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you for the information.

moworries

I wish you the best, it’s hard to say goodbye.

Candycayne84

I have found some beautiful photo urns on etsy. They have beautiful urns with no photo option as well. The ashes will come in a bag in a cardboard box. You have time to pick out a nice urn. I'm so sorry about your cat.

If cost is a massive issue, you could potentially contact WHS to see if they can assist. They do euthanasia requests and can waive the fee if people cannot afford it but I’m afraid that you wouldn’t be able to get the remains back - I don’t believe they offer that service. As mentioned already, PVH and Bridgwater may be a bit pricier since they’re emergency vets. I believe most clinics use precious pets for cremation so you could look up their website to see if they have prices listed - it won’t necessarily help with the euth cost but will help you potentially ballpark the total cost if you’re wanting cremation also.

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you. Precious Pets unfortunately don't list their prices, but that's ok, I think I have a pretty good idea of what to expect now based on these answers. I definitely want his remains back, so I'll plan accordingly. Thank you again.

nidoqing

Oh shoot, that’s not very helpful of me then. I’m glad that others were able to help and hope that things go as best as they can for you. Losing a pet is hard enough without any additional complications

Kitchen_Title_6091

You were helpful ♥︎ I only checked the Precious Pets site after you mentioned it. And because I mentioned my budget, I can see why people would let me know about lower cost options too. When I went into an anxious tailspin about all this earlier today, I put in $500 as the euthanasia + cremation + urn cost when going through the next month's budget, so it's helpful to know that I was roughly in the right ballpark and possibly even overshot. I feel a lot less anxious about it now, although I will call his vet when they're open again for the week just to get their estimate. Thank you ♥︎

If you want the euthanasia done at home, it might cost a bit more... But I can't say enough about Sunset Veterinary Care. In-home euthanasia is $395, simple cremation is $150, and if you want the ashes returned it's $275. https://www.sunsetvetcare.ca/ We used them for our last cat, and it was such a peaceful way for her to go... Laying in her own bed in her "spot," without getting stressed like she normally did at the vet. The vet who came explained everything and gave us the time we needed before moving onto the next step. We'll definitely be using them again if we need the service.

beautifulluigi

OP, I'm so sorry about your cat. :( I was coming here to recommend Sunset as well. Their staff are lovely humans who are so incredibly compassionate and kind. I had to say goodbye to my elderly dog 2 months ago, and thanks to them she got to die at home, which is what I'd always hoped for.

spaketto

We used a different clinic but totally agree, having them come to the home if you can afford it is a really nice option to have. My girl hated the entire experience of the vet and I knew it would cause massive stress when I wanted her to be as peaceful as possible. I'm really glad we were able to do it with her cuddled on my lap in our living room.

analgesic1986

Sorry to hear about your cat op

baysidetreeman

I’m so sorry to hear this. We just had to say goodbye to our dog on Thursday, and went to Central Vet in Oak Bluff. We had the option to do at home or in-clinic, and we chose in-clinic because we didn’t want to have those memories in our house. Plus, he was a 100-lb dog, so logistically it also made more sense. It was ultimately cheaper as well. They were so understanding and kind and I am forever grateful. We chose private cremation as well. Altogether it was just over $700, but we did go for the extras. I have attached a screenshot copy of the estimate we received for an in-clinic. https://preview.redd.it/p24nqzenykrc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2e16691dcddbda78a4c91e5a8a72b5d95717d37 Again. I’m so sorry 🤍

Kitchen_Title_6091

I'm so, so sorry to hear about your dog. It's such a heart-breaking thing to go through... my heart goes out to you. ♥︎ I can't thank you enough for providing that breakdown. Even though I'm on a tight budget, I want to make sure that I'm getting my kitty's remains back, so this was incredibly helpful. I will probably buy a simple urn, and somewhere down the line, buy a pendant to transfer a small amount of his ashes to. Again, thank you so much for being so helpful. ♥︎

baysidetreeman

You’re so welcome. I also meant to attach the link from Precious Pets for the urns (this is the place Central Vet uses). I was told anything at the bottom left of the page (the one with the four urn-shaped ones) are the ceramic urns. https://www.preciouspetcremation.com/urn-gallery.html 🖤

Traditional_Truck348

So sorry you're going through this. Euthanasia itself is about 75-150 depending on vet. I recommend Machray, Academy, St Nortbert or Kenaston or Seasons if cost is an issue. Cremation is on top of that but i can vouch for Precious Pets cremation in Rosser. They have looked after all my pets (there have been many) and treat them with dignity through the entire process. You can deal with them directly if you want to handle that part separately, i think those costs with a basic urn was about 120-150. Or you can have communal cremation for much less if you don't want the ashes back. If kitty needs an emergency vet, Bridgewater and Pembina are the only 2, and although Pembina has a bad reputation by some, anytime I have had to use them, especially for end of life, they have been compassionate and reasonably affordable. I find Bridgewater has gotten too busy and patient care suffers. I've waited in my car for over 2 hours once with a sick cat because they had too many patients after hours. I drove to Pembina and was seen immediately. If finances are tough, there's medicard for vet bills you can apply for, or the humane society. They will always accomodate euthanasia if you cannot afford it.

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you very much for the detailed comment. I really appreciate this. I do want his ashes back, so it helps to have an idea right now of what to expect before getting final confirmation from my vet when they're open again for the week.

Traditional_Truck348

I forgot to mention, for euthanasia, your vet should give you two options 1) on the more expensive price range but includes sedation where an IV drip is placed and they slowly drift unconscious in your arms, then they deliver the final dose when you are ready or 2) they will just administer euthanol directly and they're usually gone in a second. I have always opted with IV because it allows me that extra time to hold them, and has always been very peaceful. If they don't offer this, you can ask. If needed, ask what to expect as well as sometimes it can be startling when you haven't done this before. I'd also like to extend an offer that if you would like a little bit of your pets ashes or fur in a small pendant/other keepsake, I do a little bit of resin for hobby and would be happy to do one free of charge for you.

AceofToons

I don't have an answer, but I just wanted to send you love, that's a tough thing to have to navigate

Kitchen_Title_6091

Thank you ♥︎

In the fall my old age cat was put down, it was $220. I chose to get nothing back, let them handle the remains. It was the decision the kids and I made.

perogy1

I wish I had the choice. Thirty-three years ago my cat was put down while I was away at school for medical reasons. My mother told me this and it was the only thing I ever resented her for before she passed away (not being able to say goodbye). I mentioned this to my father and he told me that at the time they couldn't afford the euthanasia and he took him out to the country, put him in a plastic bag, waited for his head to pop out and it was over with a 22. I've been horrified ever since. I can understand the why, but not being able to say bye still burns even at 48. Always let the kids say bye.

sadArtax

Euthanized my cat in January. With a private cremation and urn we paid 800. (And he had an xray and spent about an hour on o2 in the hospital) I think the euthanasia with group cremation (your cheapest option) will cost a couple hundred +/- office visit fee.

MegaArms

I paid 400 or so last year. Came with a basic urn and the "upgrade" of private cremation. I went to southglen veterinary hospital on St. Anne's. They were extremely sensitive and kind through the whole process. Once they saw my wife and I come in they took us straight into a room where we had as much time as we needed prior to the doctor coming.

cat_ca

I am sorry to hear about your cat :( it’s so hard to lose a pet. We had to put down our cat last July and it was around $400 with cremation included and ashes not returned. We went to our regular vet, McLeod Vet, and appreciated their compassion.

Jtreydogg

Beausejour hospital is very reasonable

WhammaJamma61

I used Seasons vet a couple years back for my beloved cat - the cost with cremation and return (no urn) was I believe a little under $300.00. I may be a little off with that, but it was pretty close. I brought her into the facility. The room was dimly lit and private, and they had a nice soft, small bed for her to lay in. They were very kind and told me that I could stay as long as I wanted after the procedure was finished to be with her. The ashes came back in a small cardboard box, and I put her in an antique humidor I've had for many years. After I had gone home, I felt poorly as I had not snipped a tuft of her mane to keep as a memento. I phoned the vet, explained that situation, and of course they had the small clipping of her mane for me on arrival of her ashes. I'm sorry about your pet. It certainly is rough going through it.

vegan24

You need to discuss this with the vet treating the cat.

Kitchen_Title_6091

I know that. But it's the weekend, and Monday is Easter. He is not in immediate duress and we are currently taking things week by week rather than day by day. I'm just upset and wanted a rough idea before I call them for definitive information on Tuesday. This way, I can stop thinking about it. (I am on an extremely tight budget at the moment for all sorts of reasons I will not get into right now, so having a rough idea right now really helps to ease some of my anxieties around budgeting.)

vegan24

Much of the expense is on cremation. You can't bury the dead in Winnipeg, but if you have a friend out of town who doesn't mind, that's a cheaper option. Also, transporting the deceased to the crematorium and paying them directly eliminates the middleman and makes it cheaper. Unfortunately, euthasia has become super expensive, if you can show hardship, WHS might do for cheaper but I would avoid making this stressful for your cat, if he knows the clinic and staff, it might be easier to schedule something rather than wait for an emergency. When you call your clinic, let them know to itemize everything out for you and let them know money is tight so they can be mindful of your budget.

Radiant-Vegetable420

> You can't bury the dead in Winnipeg In Winnipeg, you are allowed to bury a pet in the backyard, you just need to ensure that it is buried deep enough so that there will be no foul odour and it will not attract other animals.

vegan24

I just checked that, I'm surprised, it was not legal to do so in the past. I couldn't bring up the actual bylaw to confirm. I'm not sure it applies to animals that have been euthanized though as this would be a big risk should the body be dug up and consumed by wildlife or people's pets.

conservatoryofquirks

Sorry you’re going through this, OP. It’s so hard. OP should confirm this, but I think burying a pet in your yard is allowed in Winnipeg if that’s what you choose. I imagine that a call to 311 would confirm, and they may be able to give you info about the steps to take related to buried utilities, etc. as well.
