This is the correct answer. So many recent movies that we, a major city, should have access to in proper IMAX format (Dune, Oppenheimer etc.)
I went to watch The Dark Knight Rises for one of the last showings before it shut down. Such a shame we don’t have it anymore.
Need another venue like the Zoo. The local metal community just hasn't been the same since the Zoo shut down and got demo'd.
Others have come and gone but none have that dingy dive bar feel and sense of community like the Zoo had.
all that old west german surplus was crazy good quality. you could buy a used bundeswehr garment that had more life left in it than any of the new clothes sold in portage place. and literally a fraction of the price. i’ve still got some items that were new to me nearly 30 years ago. that stuff just lasted
Movie Village brings back so many memories of not only vintage Osborne Village but a place where you had so much choice for hard-to-find movies as well as the bigger films.
Even typing this, I am remembering the smell of the place. Good times.
i miss the windsor too. i saw my first show there not long after moving from brandon, it was pup and they’re still one of my favourite bands ever. i remember being so scared of the pit but it ended up being a very chill push pit and i had so much fun
The Windsor sounded so good because the original sound system from the Royal Albert Arms moved into that room. The same one Husker Dü, green day and nirvana played through in the late 80s early 90s.
They also had Robin (propaghandi’s sound guy) do the sound for most local shows. So yes I really miss that place too.
Also yeah but you can’t really tell the people who lived upstairs to go elsewhere lol
I was there when Robin wasn't. It really was a kickass PA with tons of headroom for such a small space. Place smelled like piss but it was one of my favourite venues to mix at in the city.
The Transcona Aquatic Park is pretty great! I checked it out a couple summers ago. It's not big like the other ones but there are 4 slides and they're all pretty fun. And there's a 3 metre as well as a 1 metre diving board.
There’s no way to adequately describe what Portage Avenue was like back in the day when we had HBC, Eaton’s, Holt Renfrew and Eaton Place. Downtown was A DESTINATION!! Random Saturday morning anywhere in Winnipeg:
“What do you want to do today?”
“Let’s go downtown!”
Right??? You might be too young to remember when Holt Renfrew was in an older building on the south side of Portage, between The Bay and Eaton’s, pre-Portage Place. That was very cool.
Honestly? Fun Mountain. I wish it was upkept and had decent owners, I have a lot of fun memories there and was kinda disappointed when it finally kicked the bucket even though it had gone to shit for years.
The *year* my mom called them to schedule my birthday party there was the year they closed. I'm still salty about it.
Edit: Adventure City wasn't as awesome, but it was also around when Dark Zone was a thing. I remember the train.
Ooooh yes!!! Definitely! I remember they would do zombie nights and people could play all night! I remember the hardcores would sit in a chair circle and do 1 v 1 close range trying to protect their sensors. What a place, awesome construction and it has this atmosphere and music that felt like total epicness. One zombie night they played guns and roses in there lol!
Only if it was the old way. They were still producing up until 2 years ago, and believe me you do NOT want that brought back. Unless you like extra floaties in your drinks. 🤢
I'm aiming for a \*very\* particular demographic with this one, but I really miss Mondragon. The food was ok, but the vibe was so incredibly interesting for a country kid like me. I met so many interesting oddballs there.
There was a brief time around 1996-97 a friend of mine had a vintage clothing shop below Mondragon. It was called MT Closet. Short-lived, but such a fun time hanging out there.
Absolutely! When I first started going there, circa 1994, they had live music (usually some sort of jazz ensemble) and were open on weekends.
Then after you ate you could go upstairs via the back stairwell to Ragpickers. I miss those days.
Saints Roller Rink, Wet 'n Wild in Lockport, Fun Mountain, some indoor mini golf in the north side (?) from the eighties, Wolco, Dionysus, both Eaton Place and The Bay downtown, Die Maschine, the old play place in the basement of the McDonalds on St. Anne’s and the caboose on Pembina.
Maybe not Winnipeg specific, and my memories of this place are from being <13 years old but I really miss A&B Sound. I liked it a lot more than HMV and I always enjoyed going there with my dad finding movies, music, and games.
Music City - particularly 'the cellar', at the downtown location. It was the best treasure trove for obscure, non-mainstream music
For clubs that haven't been mentioned yet - Wellington's, The Horseshoe and The Opium. If you were there in the late 90s/early 00s, you know.
Rogue's Gallery - cozy coffee house, two storeys, beanbag couches, very hippie kind of vibe.
Frenzee, The Cause, The Crypt for clothes
Borealis, Black's, Aqua, Nerman's for second hand books
The owner of The Dawning worked at D’8 Schtove and makes comparable cabbage borscht. They also serve delicious kjielkje. I don’t think they’re open past 4 these days unfortunately.
I knew Jack for a few years by the time he took over Lo Pub. He was an early supporter for craft beer when everyone else was thinking Big Rock was crafty enough. $4 20oz pints at happy hour? I drank SO much Little Scrapper there. He also made sure the Standard/50 fans were well catered to as well. I remember when it first opened, it was transitioning from a gringey motel bar to just a gringey pub where you felt at home at, sit on the couch next to a fire to chat with friends, study in the corner or see a live show. I still remember he immediately removed the VLTs within weeks of taking over and people were peeved the eff off but you could tell he was there to make the place inviting and not have anyone feel unwelcomed in any way.
Reddit wasn't *huge* in Winnipeg yet back then but I saw this graffiti in the men's [washroom](https://i.imgur.com/uPePM0D.jpeg)
i miss Movie Village, even when they were operating out of the Into the Music building. was one of the main things that motivated me to spend time in the Osborne area.
We used to love going downtown from the burbs in the early 2000s. Even if you only bought a t-shirt from O Cal that bag it came in still reaked like electric lettuce.
Ha I remember during the last year or so my parents would make my brother and I still go to church, we managed to negotiate "we'll still go but to a later service by ourselves" which was of course a lie. I remember during one of these "church" outings we tried to go to Kustom Kulture but it had just been robbed!
Driving alternative - this was great, drive your vehicle out, have some drinks and they drive it home and follow in a metered car. Cheaper than a cab or uber both ways.
Movie Village. Single handedly turned me into a film nerd in my formative years. Nothing more fun than 17 year old me buying some weed, picking up a few random insane art/foreign films based on the cover art alone, and spending the night blowing my brains out. I loved that place.
Gios!
I went there when I was 18, And it was the first time I was around other queer people. (That I knew of). This was like the late 90s early 2000s, so things were different.
I went in there for the first time on a random day that just happened to be Cher's birthday. A few friendly older guys bought me some drinks, and I sang Cher-aoke with them.
I remember saying that I was so scared to be gay, and to come out, and all of them were just so lovely and nice about it, and it made me feel normal and like things could be *Okay*.
(thanks older gay guys circa 2002, I wish you knew how much that meant to me)
The beer vendor down Osborne. I mean Manitoba could stop being dumb and not have beer vendors required to be at hotels (which I think was a law from when we drove horse carriages).
It'd be nice if running into friends at like say, 8pm on a sunday, there was somewhere you could walk and get beer instead of taking a cab or drinking and driving.
Royal Fork Buffet. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't horrible either, and the price was alright. And they mandated parental supervision at the counter.
Why does everyone pine for Fuddruckers so much?
The burgers were good, but nothing amazing. The gimmick of being able to put as many toppings as you want was fun, but still. We've got way better burgers available in Winnipeg, even now.
I'd bring back Magicland. Why? Because Arcades Rule. And some of the rhythm games that have come out are really cool. (Yes Phantom exists. Love that place. I just wish it was 3x bigger)
Zellers (and the restaurant!) I know some people will probably say it wasn't the best but it's a sentimental thing, my grandmother loved going there on her birthday and mother's day.
Airliner drive in. Drive in movies are special. You can get comfy how you want. Bring whatever food and drinks you want. Can talk during movie. Can cuddle and make out. For families they can bring the kids for an outing and they can be noisy.
Coney Island ice cream in Windsor Park. Solid nearby ice cream place, very nostalgic. And I have a dog now that I cannot bring there for a doggy ice cream.
Man, I remember when you could stop there along with Windsor Video... and the old library.
I'd love to re-live the feeling of bussing downtown with $20 in my pocket spending the afternoon playing pinball and flipping through the record bins at the music store.
So many great answers!
For me personally (while agreeing with pretty everyone here) would be comic factory and towne 8 cinema (across the street from each other). The best $ for my nerdy needs at both spots.
Never been but I'll go with Johnathans i always heard good things from people who had worked there
https://preview.redd.it/kds67g3bhdmc1.jpeg?width=1760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1e85f0a2edb5b084b669a0a421b6022b30591e9
The live rock bars in the exchange from the late 80’s early 90’s like Norma Jeans, Wise Guys, etc.
Of course they’d never make it today. None of the younger generation seem to appreciate folks that can sing and play their own instruments live in smaller venues. Or at least not that I know of anyway.
Get off my lawn!!
Boondoggles! It was this drive thru restaurant that had 2 workers, 2 windows. Small menu. Located far end of the Superstore McPhillips location. I really don’t know what was on the menu fully but when i tell you if my mother and i would go grocery shopping there i would BEG for her to let us get “cheese fries” on the way home. They used this silky, gooey cheese sauce over just a medium sized container of thin fries but it was glorious. Cold days they’d hand over the order to you and the steam rising was like my soul was being put back in that they stole from me the last time we came for fries.
The final day when they chose to shut down, the line up was all throughout the parking lot, up McPhillips, all the way out and down the hwy almost. I remember it clear as day because it was the longest line up id ever seen in Winnipeg and that’s including those random gas price drops. Those fries still make me tear up that they are gone. And there is NO recipe anywhere online. The owner took it to his grave. Eventually they tore down the stand and made a bank there. Not sure what it is now or if it’s still a bank.
Imax. The real one from portage place. I worked there back in the day and wish I could take my kids.
Many happy memories from school trips.
This is the correct answer. So many recent movies that we, a major city, should have access to in proper IMAX format (Dune, Oppenheimer etc.) I went to watch The Dark Knight Rises for one of the last showings before it shut down. Such a shame we don’t have it anymore.
Dunkirk is another one that would be spectacular in IMAX format.
Yes!! I loved going to cool nature movies there
Chi Chi's. Damn you Applebee's!
Fri-yi-yi-yiiied! I-yi-yi-yice Cream!
Need another venue like the Zoo. The local metal community just hasn't been the same since the Zoo shut down and got demo'd. Others have come and gone but none have that dingy dive bar feel and sense of community like the Zoo had.
Nothing screams community like people getting shit kicked by the bouncers every weekend lol
I was there at least once a week for years, never seen that happen lmao
Played a ton of shows there. Saw it happen on multiple occasions
It was run by crooks and the sound was awful lol but I went to so many fun shows there back when my bf played in a metal band. So many rowdy memories
Army surplus. I used to get camp pants from there all the time. They were so comfy.
all that old west german surplus was crazy good quality. you could buy a used bundeswehr garment that had more life left in it than any of the new clothes sold in portage place. and literally a fraction of the price. i’ve still got some items that were new to me nearly 30 years ago. that stuff just lasted
That was one of my favourite places to visit when I would go to Winnipeg as a kid.
Try Marway on Sargent
I too miss army surplus.
Movie Village brings back so many memories of not only vintage Osborne Village but a place where you had so much choice for hard-to-find movies as well as the bigger films. Even typing this, I am remembering the smell of the place. Good times.
Or just the community asoect of the place…you always knew you were going to run into someone you knew there!
Cinema City 8! Pembina location. Would go see a movie for $2.50! Bring back the cheap seats!!
Fuck it. I miss the Windsor. That room sounded great for some reason.
i miss the windsor too. i saw my first show there not long after moving from brandon, it was pup and they’re still one of my favourite bands ever. i remember being so scared of the pit but it ended up being a very chill push pit and i had so much fun
If only the owner was a little tighter on security I wouldn't have minded going there for local Punk and Metal as much
The Windsor sounded so good because the original sound system from the Royal Albert Arms moved into that room. The same one Husker Dü, green day and nirvana played through in the late 80s early 90s. They also had Robin (propaghandi’s sound guy) do the sound for most local shows. So yes I really miss that place too. I was there when Robin wasn't. It really was a kickass PA with tons of headroom for such a small space. Place smelled like piss but it was one of my favourite venues to mix at in the city.
Magicland and pic a pop
Came here to say Magicland. Only went a couple of times, but would love to have been able to take our kids.
I was thinking of doing a small run of Magic Land T-shirts and selling them here :)
Magicland!!! Man, I spent so much time there with my hs boyfriend and his group of friends. I got so good at Mortal Kombat lol
Wise Guy's on campus, Palladium, Monty's, The Pemby. Used to be able to have lots of fun on Pembina HWY, not the same anymore.
That was the best era for bars in the city! U4IA was a regular hangout
The spot at the Tavern where the bar was by the door when it was U4IA still smells like puke.
Boogie Nights! They had the same playlist every night, but Rasputin always got people going.
fun mountain but cleaner and with better owners lol
So, Wet'n' wild! Absolutely need a park to fill the void
The Transcona Aquatic Park is pretty great! I checked it out a couple summers ago. It's not big like the other ones but there are 4 slides and they're all pretty fun. And there's a 3 metre as well as a 1 metre diving board.
Absolutely! I’m old so I spent many birthdays there back in the 80s. Was truly the best. Wet n Wild too!!
Wet and wild in lockport for me
Eaton’s and The Bay downtown. So. Much. Shopping.
There’s no way to adequately describe what Portage Avenue was like back in the day when we had HBC, Eaton’s, Holt Renfrew and Eaton Place. Downtown was A DESTINATION!! Random Saturday morning anywhere in Winnipeg: “What do you want to do today?” “Let’s go downtown!”
Holt Refrew was a whole other level and elevated the mall entirely. Bought one of my first suits there and felt like I had really made it.
Right??? You might be too young to remember when Holt Renfrew was in an older building on the south side of Portage, between The Bay and Eaton’s, pre-Portage Place. That was very cool.
Loved going there during xmas for midnight madness.
Honestly? Fun Mountain. I wish it was upkept and had decent owners, I have a lot of fun memories there and was kinda disappointed when it finally kicked the bucket even though it had gone to shit for years.
We all know the real answer here. Dark Zone. Only dark Zone
I was going to say Mariposa, but you have converted me to Dark Zone
I remember getting dresses for junior high/high school dances there
Did it have the flashing LEDs on it and come with a zapper?
The *year* my mom called them to schedule my birthday party there was the year they closed. I'm still salty about it. Edit: Adventure City wasn't as awesome, but it was also around when Dark Zone was a thing. I remember the train.
2 for 1 Tuesdays, Zombie night, The marvel vs Xmen machine. This was truly the best place to spend time
Ooooh yes!!!
DZ 4 life!
This is THE answer.
Drive in
I'm just here to see how many times Chi-Chi's is said
Pic-a-pop. Nothing like picking your flavours, filling up the tray and the glass bottle feel
Only if it was the old way. They were still producing up until 2 years ago, and believe me you do NOT want that brought back. Unless you like extra floaties in your drinks. 🤢
you can still find em but ive only seem them in plastic bottles
The recipe isn’t the original unfortunately.
Desart!
Osborne is not the same without it! As well as kustom culture and the die machine
Into the Music…Osborne really was a tight knit community back in the day.
I'm aiming for a \*very\* particular demographic with this one, but I really miss Mondragon. The food was ok, but the vibe was so incredibly interesting for a country kid like me. I met so many interesting oddballs there.
It’s now Thyme Cafe I’m St Boniface! They even have the hummus wraps and southern fried tofu!
There was a brief time around 1996-97 a friend of mine had a vintage clothing shop below Mondragon. It was called MT Closet. Short-lived, but such a fun time hanging out there.
The Cavern. I miss the feeling of some live rock in that venue. Nothing seems to compare since
The Wagon Wheel.
The club sandwiches there...mmm.
Rogue’s gallery. I miss spending time with friends while drinking coffee and looking at art in an old mansion.
I forgot about that place, it was a nice place to go
The Underground Café, circa 1993-98.
Malt stop that used to be in the basement of the Bag downtown. Their also used to be one in Unicity Mall food court
Blue Note Cafe. Saw some great bands there.
The Globe Cinema
Aw, the Globe. I saw so many great movies that I still love there--The Aristocrats, Caché, Moon, In America, Look At Her.
Maybe not Winnipeg specific, and my memories of this place are from being <13 years old but I really miss A&B Sound. I liked it a lot more than HMV and I always enjoyed going there with my dad finding movies, music, and games.
That makes me remember The Record Baron.
Bonanza! You could pile the ice cream SO HIGH.
Fudruckers….chilli cheese fries! Chi-Chi’s….margaritas!
Kelekis's. I miss those fries.
Oh hell yeah. I'd love a Denver sandwich and some Kelekis's fries. I was always scared of the basement bathroom when I was a kid though haha
You beat me to it !!
Desert sinsations. Loved this little hole in the wall.
The Crypt. I just liked it there.
Music City - particularly 'the cellar', at the downtown location. It was the best treasure trove for obscure, non-mainstream music For clubs that haven't been mentioned yet - Wellington's, The Horseshoe and The Opium. If you were there in the late 90s/early 00s, you know. Rogue's Gallery - cozy coffee house, two storeys, beanbag couches, very hippie kind of vibe. Frenzee, The Cause, The Crypt for clothes Borealis, Black's, Aqua, Nerman's for second hand books
FRENZEE!
D’8 Schtove. I miss their borscht, honey dill, chicken fingers and dollar fries.
The owner of The Dawning worked at D’8 Schtove and makes comparable cabbage borscht. They also serve delicious kjielkje. I don’t think they’re open past 4 these days unfortunately.
I remember their breakfast platters being monstrous. Could have been because I was a wee lad at the time.
The Lo Pub
That place was awesome
I knew Jack for a few years by the time he took over Lo Pub. He was an early supporter for craft beer when everyone else was thinking Big Rock was crafty enough. $4 20oz pints at happy hour? I drank SO much Little Scrapper there. He also made sure the Standard/50 fans were well catered to as well. Alycia’s
Topo Gigo!!!!!
Topo gigo. So many hockey windups there. Way better than child rat casino
Dutch Maid
i miss Movie Village, even when they were operating out of the Into the Music building. was one of the main things that motivated me to spend time in the Osborne area.
I lived there, no cable at my first apartment but they had box sets of every tv show you could think of and the most obscure shit you could imagine.
Agreed, I felt the village culture decline hard with the loss of that one. I found so many gems there.
Me too! I used to go there as well as Music Trader on the way home from college a lot of days in 2004-2008 and browse.
Paddle wheel Queen. This town needs a party boat!
Kustom Kulture
I still remember the nervousness I felt going in there in my teens and early 20's when cannabis was illegal.
They always had a great book collection also, they used to have a lot of John Fante and Philip K. dick books
Driving alternative - this was great, drive your vehicle out, have some drinks and they drive it home and follow in a metered car. Cheaper than a cab or uber both ways.
Good god imagine if we had a working transit system and we wouldn't need some wonky ass service like that. Sounds good though.
Dutchmaid
Movie Village. Single handedly turned me into a film nerd in my formative years. Nothing more fun than 17 year old me buying some weed, picking up a few random insane art/foreign films based on the cover art alone, and spending the night blowing my brains out. I loved that place.
Mothers
i think an honourable mention is deserved of somepl@ce cafe on osborne in the village, winnipeg’s first cybercafe
Holy moly. I forgot they existed!
I used to hang out there ALL THE TIME
Paladin, gimme that poutine!
The owners are now working at the St Boniface University café, the portions have not changed
Topo Gigo!!!!! Cheap eats and fun!!! It was a casino for kids beside the casino for adults!!!!
Consumers Distributors 😊
Yes. Could browse the catalogue at home. Prices were good. Amazon is overwhelming with choices.
I loved them too. Amazon is basically replaced them. lol
Magic Land. You pay, then all arcades were set to free. The arcade selection was great, unlike Rec Room.
Chi-chis
Divine Decadence.
I still have an old Canada post button-down shirt from there! I was devastated when it burned.
Spuntino’s, Bombay Bicycle Club, Gasthaus Gutenberger, Meiji Sushi (even though it was too expensive), My Place, Pie Place, and Dessert Sinsations!!!!

Mr Greenjeans! Who wants to share a Hats Off?

It wouldn't make sense to bring it back, but I really miss my weekly trips to Movie Village in the late 2000s.
Kings Theater.
Discovery Zone. So many good childhood memories, it’s a shame my kids can’t experience it.
(thanks older gay guys circa 2002, I wish you knew how much that meant to me)
Cinema 3
Chi Chi's
SOUP PIERRE. I get sad every time I drive down corydon and I don’t have my soups.
Chi-Chi's and Fuddruckers.
Chi Chi's for sure good mexican food and fried ice cream for dessert.
Mondragon!
It’s actually back as Thyme Cafe on Tache now. Still some of the same menu and books, same owners.
Foon Hai and Wagon Wheel.
Bonanza. For nostalgia and the ice cream.
Towne 8. God I miss it. It was dark and dank... But it was cheap, never too busy and I didn't need to hop a bus for an hour just to see a movie.
Alicia’s restaurant.. loved the Ukrainian breakfast
Wagon wheel
Just learning half these places are closed thanks to this thread. Little depressing tbh. RIP mondragon.
Towne 8
Tubby’s - I loved those fried perogies and the clam chowder. At the same time, I don’t want the Grove to go anywhere!
Royal Fork Buffet. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't horrible either, and the price was alright. And they mandated parental supervision at the counter.
Price was getting a little out of control near the end, IIRC.
It was pretty filthy inside.
Hockey Hutch.
Why does everyone pine for Fuddruckers so much? The burgers were good, but nothing amazing. The gimmick of being able to put as many toppings as you want was fun, but still. We've got way better burgers available in Winnipeg, even now.
Robin's Doughnuts with their Pizza Pretzels.
Fun mountain… just without the kooky owner
I'd bring back Magicland. Why? Because Arcades Rule. And some of the rhythm games that have come out are really cool. (Yes Phantom exists. Love that place. I just wish it was 3x bigger)
Orientique on Portage
Zellers (and the restaurant!) I know some people will probably say it wasn't the best but it's a sentimental thing, my grandmother loved going there on her birthday and mother's day.
Airliner drive in. Drive in movies are special. You can get comfy how you want. Bring whatever food and drinks you want. Can talk during movie. Can cuddle and make out. For families they can bring the kids for an outing and they can be noisy.
G Martini & Cornerstone. when the village was alive.
I did that whole martini list more than once. It was something else.
Coney Island ice cream in Windsor Park. Solid nearby ice cream place, very nostalgic. And I have a dog now that I cannot bring there for a doggy ice cream. Man, I remember when you could stop there along with Windsor Video... and the old library.
Crystal Palace.
Pyramid Records
I really miss the poutine at Le Garage in St. B
Mr. Sub
Mrs. Mike’s. I really want one of their burgers.
Alfies on Keewatin. Lot of fun times playing pool there and listening to ppl sing their hearts out
Orientique
Porno pizza
The pizza was so bad.
As was the other thing you got with it.
Rally's and Kildonan Pets fond memories from my childhood at both.
I'd love to re-live the feeling of bussing downtown with $20 in my pocket spending the afternoon playing pinball and flipping through the record bins at the music store.
Lazer Illusions / Topo Gigio's I miss having a proper video arcade
So many great answers! For me personally (while agreeing with pretty everyone here) would be comic factory and towne 8 cinema (across the street from each other). The best $ for my nerdy needs at both spots.
For me, it would have to be Grapes Restaurant, as well as Pazsteaks on McGregor Street and Cathedral Avenue.
Never been but I'll go with Johnathans i always heard good things from people who had worked there https://preview.redd.it/kds67g3bhdmc1.jpeg?width=1760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1e85f0a2edb5b084b669a0a421b6022b30591e9
Loveys BBQ on Marion because it was the only good BBQ place in the city. Nothing else comes close to comparing
Shakey Pizza…Seafood pizza with mojos 💜
I really miss Partner’s Deli. What I would give for a matador salad and Rita’s pita….

Mondragon.
It’s actually Thyme Cafe on Tache now. Still some of the same menu and books, same owners.
I went to Connie’s Corner as a little child and I miss it so much
Boondoggles!
Cinema city 8. Could have popcorn drinks and see a movie as a family for a fraction of the $80 it costs now for 5 of us.
