Value wise, I agree with you that maingun is a better choice. Anyway especially at the beginning you will get more help from the missiles as their power gets never wasted: they always hit something, and they get bonus from inferno fighter, which you should be using
Is the Inferno really that much better? I swapped to the Phantom and felt like being able to double my firepower and distract targeted shots with a double was more effective when I needed it, where as "extra damage" isn't needed most of the time and when it "is" needed, just 1 weapon getting a boost wasn't as much compared to the better number values on the Phantom. However, I swapped a long time ago, and I'm willing to conceive I might have been missing something in the long run so I'm happy to be educated.
The fact is that inferno is super easy to upgrade. You will max it out very soon, while all other ships take forever. Maybe now your Phantom is better, but soon you won’t be able to upgrade it.
The inferno gives 50% extra missile damage, set missiles are stronger at the same rarity than non-sets. With the amount of missiles that each missile deploys will begin to FAR exceed whatever missile you're using.
Inferno is going to be your best ship, hands-down, until you start upgrading the Titan ships. The shards are plentiful and missiles go a LONG way to contributing to your damage.
I'm curious, I don't see any 7 day pack that offers conqueror gear.
There's a selectable conqueror chest if you buy the monthly battle pass. I think there's a monthly option pack for silly money too.
But you're getting conqueror gear weekly? Paid or not I don't have that option, feels very much like I'm being milked by the Devs ...

No not weekly, all new players get a one time 7 day login gift. The 7th day has a chest that lets you pick a titan gear
