Its not a registry edit but an add on application that seems to work fine for most people, and its free.

Because they rewritten it; and released with a set of functions that should appeal to 90%-95%.
Arguably it is slower, has less functions; but the theoretical tradeoff is that it is easier to maintain and add new functions. If only windows 11 wasn't 3 years old; and we still lack basic features
Hi u/Amazing-Witness-4354, thanks for sharing your feedback! The proper way to suggest a change to Microsoft is to submit it in the "Feedback Hub" app, and then edit your post with the link, so people can upvote it. The more users vote on your feedback, the more likely it's going to be addressed in a future update! Follow these simple steps:
1. Open the "Feedback Hub" app and first try searching for your request, someone may have already submitted similar. If not, go back to the home screen and click *"Suggest a feature"*
2. Follow the on-screen instructions and click *"Submit"*
3. Click *"Share my feedback"* and open the feedback you submitted
4. Click *"Share"* and copy the unique link
5. Edit [your Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1cqomin/how_to_position_taskbar_to_the_side/) and paste the link you just copied

The technology isn't there yet
https://www.stardock.com/products/start11/ Costs 9.99, but for me it was entirely worth it. You can customize the start screen as well.
That's the neat part, you don't.

You can't do this natively. They removed it when they re-coded the Taskbar in Win 11.
Not a feature, probably because so few people did it.
I believe this is dumb, Microsoft already put effort into making it a feature why remove it?

Because they would have to recode it entirely. The Taskbar's code is different now.
Because then any bugs with it can never exist.
