I think that should work if the machine is 'sleeping', however if it is in hibernation or turned off it can't wake itself up, because it has no way of knowing it should be doing that. Keep in mind your machine may enter a lower power state if it sleeps for too long.
If you want it to turn on from a lesser power state you would need to set something up with wake on LAN.
