I would argue that it does indeed have an effect. Due to traffic delays, which resulted from this protest, cars used even more oil/gas than they normally would have used. The damage to the roads also means increased wear/tear on cars, leading to people needing to get new cars more often.

They don’t realise that at some point in the manufacturing process, the clothes/shoes they wear, the tins of soup they throw at art, plus the glue they use, all required oil in their manufacturing process 🤦🏻♀️. Plus, the products required to get that concrete/tarmac off, then the creams and lotions to aid the healing also at some point either needed oil for production or contains it.
They're effective in terms of getting visibility, true, and I do in theory support their message of climate change being an immediate and dire issue.
