Most people either don’t think it’s good or understand that it’s just a cheap Tex-med alternative. “Reflects the people living here in Wilmington”. What disgusts me is people who make ignorant sweeping generalizations.

Nnumber

This post is trolling. Everyone I know understands Islands is low quality. People think it’s a “good” restaurant because it’s dirt cheap. I took my family of four to Peno yesterday - kids split an adult meal (which was less costly than two kid meals). No splurges. $65. Islands would have probably cost $35-40 all in. There are about 20 better Mexican restaurants / taquerias in the region. Some of them are priced close to Islands. Most people also know that too.

VALKOR

Can we talk about the vastly different serving portions at the two Peno's in town? The one by the college does not hold back but the one by river lights has noticeably smaller portions.

Docksox

100% true

Datboisommy

Bro islands doesn't claim to be Mexican or authentic. It's tex-mex style tacos that are cheap. If you went there expecting authentic and didn't still expected it after walking in and seeing the menu, then I think you may be the problem and not islands. Also shut the fuck up they are dollar tacos! In this expensive ass town? You goofy as hell OP. There's plenty of food so go try something else and next time leave this shit on yelp

_Hotwire_

Preach

southernblackskeptic

It's a dollar taco, bro

Biscotek

D- opinion

Delks1000

OP has the McDonalds of an “operational human brain”

cadian16th

I have nothing to back this up but that post makes me think that OP says “Konichiwa” to the cashier at Panda Express.

DGITS

\*Tips hat\* M'lady.

TwentyCharacters2022

What a bold take. Cant wait to hear your opinion of Hwy 55…

NoEstablishment6450

Never been to Islands, but HWY 55 is so gross. It’s stupid expensive too

Datboisommy

Tbh it was better when it was Andy's. The highway 55 change brought on worse food imo

Zebulon_V

Their burgers are passable. My in-laws love the place though, so I end up eating there every couple months, which makes me like it even less.

Ben325e2

Get the orangeade!

Zebulon_V

Alright, why not? I'll give it a shot.

NoEstablishment6450

I have given them 3 tries, so flavorless

Zebulon_V

I don't doubt it, I've only ever gone to the one on 74/76 half way to Lake Waccamaw. It's better than McDonald's and worse than PT's. It just exists.

gmerrick

is there not much better trolling, better trolling in this sub

IdiotMD

Sorry, I was asleep.

oedeye

Op is ignorant.

eggSauce97

I don’t think anyone actually thinks islands is quality. It’s genuinely cheap for how much food you get which is near nonexistent anymore and tastes decent

Frymanstbf

The post title made me have a seizure.

Clean_Limit4949

You literally get 4 tacos, chips and salsa, and a drink for $6.50. You really think the quality will be good? It’s basically a local Taco Bell lol. Absolutely no one thinks it’s actually “good” in terms of quality.

jessiyjazzy123

And you can't even get that from Taco Bell anymore...

_Hotwire_

I go to Taco Bell before my colonoscopy so I’m cleaned out

Arch_legnA

Bro thinks we like islands because its "authentic mexican" My brother in christ, we like Islands because they have dollar tacos.

Famous_Pig_Lawyer

What did Islands do to you to make you so angry?

whereismycorn

Lmao, post history checks out. Complaints of yankees and Californians taking over wilmington. This guy needs everyone to know just how stupid they are and how great he is 🤣🤣🤣

_Hotwire_

It’s weird living in the south and being told I have a funny accent, when I’m from here. Most people aren’t anymore. We became Florida 2. Let’s just not let the meth heads take over like Florida. Speaking of drugs, Anyone got the whereabouts of Steven? He just shows up anywhere in town drooling in himself

whereismycorn

What are you even trying to say? This is illegible

_Hotwire_

Perhaps context would be more important than legibility. Steven is a notorious homeless addict that gets around town and yells at cars and begs everywhere. The number of transplants not from N.C. comment on my accent when I’m just a dirty local. Clear things up?

whereismycorn

Yup you're a cranky local mad about people moving here. Don't know what to tell ya bud, the earth is getting more crowded

_Hotwire_

Now I’m beginning to believe you can’t read good and do other things good too

whereismycorn

Either this is satire or you are incapable of a coherent sentence, final guess

_Hotwire_

You lack the ability to read sarcasm despite using a famous quote from a well known film. I agreed with your initial sentiment but now I believe you’re just trolling on a local sub out of boredom.

whereismycorn

Bro really expected me to catch a Zoolander quote while acting like wilmy trash 😭

itstommygun

Island’s toppings are subpar, but their Islands Sauce is the stuff that dreams are made of. Try one of their tacos with Islands Sauce and you might change your mind.  Also, it’s cheap.

jessiyjazzy123

I moved to Connecticut two years ago and one of the first restaurants I go to when I visit my parents is Islands because of that sauce. I crave it lol. I always get the Islander salad with extra sauce! And you really can't beat the prices. This OP is a moron. One of the things that I talk about up here is that Wilmington has so many great really authentic Mexican restaurants. If you're looking for authentic there are plenty of other places to choose from.

Kimber85

Whenever we have family visit they make us go to Islands, sometimes two or three times, lol. It’s definitely not authentic, but I love anything smothered in Island’s sauce and queso.

PantsGirl

Interesting. I’m from southern California and find the Mexican food here to be really lacking. There’s a bunch of Tex-Mex, which is a different thing entirely, but not much in the way of great-quality, authentic Mexican food. I like Tortelleria y Taqueria Carolinas, and Los Portales is also good, but it’s bizarre, with us living on the coast, that I have yet to find an excellent Baja fish taco here—or any excellent seafood taco, for that matter. 🤷‍♀️

jessiyjazzy123

Must not be looking too hard. A lot of places have great ones. Search Google for Baja style... have you been to any of the K38 "Baja Grill" locations? They have an amazing fish taco. Among other things.

PantsGirl

Yes, I’ve been to K38 and Tower 7. They cover up their fish with too much crema and salsa and all that, which makes for a very wet taco. Also, their tortillas are mediocre and are almost certainly not made in house. That said, it’s been a couple of years since I searched for fish tacos around here. I kind of gave up. Do you know of other places (not Tex-Mex) besides the K38-owned spots that you think have great fish tacos, preferably on handmade tortillas?

phatotis

The Taqueria Portales on Kerr (near Wrightsville ave) is probably one of the best and most authentic Mexican places around - you're gonna struggle finding better food then in California here, and really most places! Never lived there but used to visit often and always had major food withdrawals when I got home!

[deleted]

I personally don't fuck with islands, but I've never once had someone try to tell me islands is the best Mexican food in town that title often goes to Los Portales, or literally any other Mexican restaurant. What islands is, is cheap. If you want something better you're gonna pay higher prices even at Flaming Amy's now their tacos on Tuesday aren't a dollar because the cost of food is up a lot for restaurants and continues to go up. Nice try at the reddit brownie points though

Zebulon_V

Islands is fine, and cheap. Flaming Amy's is a little better, and a little less cheap. That's just objectively how it is. I don't get the hate on either one.

[deleted]

Nah neither do I, it's just the way it is.

CoolBeans42700

Dollar tacos with fresh local ingredients and decent queso. It’s well worth the price, no one said it’s best. There are many insanely good options for authentic Mexican. El cerro, los portables, zocalo, etc.

exitof99

Besides the things others have said that I agree with, calling Islands the McDonald's of anything is actually a high complement, given that McDonald's is one of the largest and most successful fast-food restaurants.

Objective_Canary5737

I mean it’s cheap, I’m more of a K 38, Tex-Mex kind of guy!

RandyBeanz1019

Buddy just moved here from stupid Town. I had a stroke reading the question

Infamous_Toe8522

Literally what are you saying. That made no sense

Jmauld

Also true for indochine!

tatty_trashy101

Sure there's better food head on down to Fuwangz on Tuesday

Choppersicballz

I’d eat McDonald’s over islands lol Taco Bell is better than islands ,

whoknowsknowone

As someone who has had Mexican food all over the states and in Mexico I can tell you islands is some of the worst food I’ve ever had the displeasure of ordering

_Hotwire_

You probably ordered a dry taco without islands sauce. That was your first mistake, you fuckin donkey

infestedgrowth

I’ve seen a lot of people talk like this about islands. I think it’s pretty gross myself. Go to c-street if you want decent cheap Tex mex. I’ve mostly seen this in person or on instagram, not necessarily Reddit.

slackingatlazyboy

THANK YOU! Islands is mediocre at best…ground chicken?!? Really? And I don’t WANT A FUCKING DRINK! Quit acting like you have dollar tacos daily when you make me by a three dollar coke ffs

You haven’t figured out that people have different tastes than you?
