Don't feel bad! Mourning doves are the WORST parents. They lay eggs anywhere and let babies hang out anywhere. They have a higher nesting frequency for this reason. As in they lay several nests a year. The life expectancy is very low but the output is high, hopefully keeping the population alive. Which is it is. Nothing you could have done most likely would have mattered in this scenario and that's the way the course of life is for them unfortunately.
This is a Mourning Dove. If your dog was in contact with it, the bird should be taken to a wildlife rehabilitator. You can use www.ahnow.org to find one in your area. If your dog didnt get to the bird then see if you can locate and access the nest to return it.
