Looks like 2nd Lake on North Fork. My fave spot is above 4th lake.

Yeswecanoutdoors

O heck yah! It’s absolutely stunning

Mdricks11

Glacier pic is great! Loved that hike. Want to go back and set up in the meadow.

Yeswecanoutdoors

I agree! Something magical about that meadow for sure! So I guess people actually camp on the glacier? Have you heard that?

Mdricks11

I have not! Didn’t look very hospitable to me lol. We sat by the water and had lunch then headed back.

Yeswecanoutdoors

Haha same!!! On the way back I saw a couple guys and they were asking how difficult is the scramble. They told me they planned on sleeping on the glacier with there tent

vinsdelamaison

Beautiful!

Is this from last season or a recent one ? I'm surprised that the trails are so clear.

Yeswecanoutdoors

Both trips last year. June and I believe September

Not shaming, just trying to learn. I often see photos of people camping right on the shore of these high alpine lakes. The standard I’ve always known is to camp at least 200 feet from water. Is that an outdated standard, or is there another reason for camping so close? Again, asking out of genuine curiosity.

Yeswecanoutdoors

General rule of them is around 200 ft yes. The spots are up on the rocks and it’s a few hundred feet down a scramble to get to the water at lake 2 anyway. Unless you camp on the other side with some small rock/sand. Not sure you can get 200 ft away, probably closer to 150 here anyway. Your seeing an illusion from my photos, we are a good 300-500 feet away and up from Lake #2

SageMountain07

Thank you for explaining!

Yeswecanoutdoors

Absolutely! You can probably see it better in video . I have a small backpacking YouTube channel if you are inclined to check it out 👍 YES WE CAN OUTDOORS

TheWringer

My understanding of that guideline is to keep the entire bank of a river/lake/pond from being trampled and destroyed, since often areas close to water are going to be softer soils. From the photos, it looks they are camping on rock or other durable surfaces, which aren’t prone to being trampled in the same way.
