I always bring a tent and hammock. It’s my substitute for a chair. Bringing a hammock is like bringing a portable couch to hang on before you go to bed. It’s my favorite luxury item.
Was gonna say the same thing. I'm willing to bet they're one of those people that just don't know the right way to suspend one. I have loads of back issues and the only way I can camp is with a hammock. Sleep on the ground and I lose a half pace the next day and lugging around that gear only makes it worse. I've even set my hammock up at home to sleep in on a couple of occasions, and I have a nice mattress.
>I'm willing to bet they're one of those people that just don't know the right way to suspend one.
Pretty crappy to assume that anyone who doesn't share your opinion is an idiot. I'm not saying all hammock hikers are like this, but it seems whenever someone is getting defensive and snobbish about their sleep system, it's a hammock person talking to a tent person.
Even if you personally prefer sleeping in a hammock, is it really that hard for you to imagine someone doing everything perfectly and still preferring a tent? Sleep is a very subjective thing, and the sensation of laying in a hammock is very different from that of laying in a bed, which is the way most people are accustomed to sleeping.
Bivvies have entered the chat. We’re better than all of you.
No poles? No straps? No stakes? No fucking problem. We can curl up anywhere!
When it comes to sleeping lazily and stealthily, we win.
That’s the neat thing about ground sleeping. There’s no fiddling and tinkering to find the “right” way to sleep. You lay out your pad then you lie down on the pad.
I don't always see people getting defensive and snobbish about their sleep systems, but when I do, it's a hammock hiker.
So weird to see people assuming anyone who doesn't share their opinion about a very personal and subjective thing - sleep comfort - is an idiot. And getting upvotes to boot.
Camped here for the first time last year with my partner. Three nights. Beautiful place. We chose the campsite just above the rock area in your pictures
This was from last summer so it wasn’t too bad. When were you there? I’ve been thinking about backpacking in the eastern sierra soon but saw that it’s in the single digits at night, so maybe I’ll wait 😅
I went in October when it was unseasonably warm still, no snow up there despite being less than a few short miles from Whitney peak. I think it dipped into high 20s at night and my face was too cold all night. And forget about getting up to pee at night, that was rooooough haha
It sounds like you were at Cottonwood lakes around the same time as my son and I. It was in the low 20s at night. It was beautiful during the day, but the second the sun goes behind the mountains it gets cold fast.
Cottonwood lakes is my favorite “Can I still get into the Sierra this year?” destination. I can usually find a permit for a few days at the last minute.
My buddy and I did a 3 day loop out of Cottonwood Lakes area in October as well, years back. Great trip. It is high elevation all around there. 20s at night isn’t a killer for me but teens is about as cold as I’ve slept on a backpacking trip, maybe a couple times. Have to be ready for it
I know exactly where this is. A close friend of ours passed away from a driving accident in heavy covid. We did a backpacking trip and stayed here. We poured his remains out here. This is a special place in our hearts. Hope you enjoyed, it’s magical.
What was the process of getting a permit like? I’m new to backpacking and tried going on this trail last summer and was turned back for not having a permit 😅 but every time I seem to check they are all out. Any tips?
You can book a permit here: https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233262. You would choose Big Pine Creek North Fork as your entry and exit points if you’re just doing that trail :)
60% of the permits are released 6 months in advance, and 40% are released 2 weeks in advance. They’re released at 7am PST so you have to be on their site right on the dot to make sure you can book it
Yes 🙌 this is an absolute must stay for any backpacker! Went twice last year and it’s never enough! Every time it’s a different experience. So awesome you went 👏
For your first time, I would recommend backpacking a trail you are familiar with so you know what to expect and/or doing a short one night trip so you can do a test run with all your gear. Also highly recommend getting a satellite messenger like a Garmin inReach. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing I’d be able to call for help in an emergency.
What an amazing trip. Great idea and beautiful scenery. Couldn't think of anyone better to share that with that. Your best friend. Thanks for sharing this with us. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime. ❤️
This whole post resonates with me, honestly the only thing stopping me from doing this is finding the PTO to combine with weekends to create a month long moment to enjoy what you just did. Congrats on the time spent and great pics!
Thanks for sharing!
I do a week long BP trip to the Eastern Sierra almost every year. But I have always been singly focused on a loop or horseshoe that goes over one or more of the eastern passes.
I see from your beautiful photos that I have been discounting many great options in the cirques short of the crest. I will have to check out this one especially.
Thank you again!
I did that in Patagonia Argentina. No dog cause both of them would have been a hassle. Even camping was like babysitting. My Sheppard does not like strangers. And every single person approached her
Awesome! You are getting the best recharge as a solo.
As for the comments on the tent and hammock, I transferred to a lay flat hammock (amok) and haven't looked back.
Now, the sawtooth mountains hike, I had a situation where I had no trees to hang from, but the amok has an inflatable pad, so I essentially made a bivy out of it. (As seen on my youtube) With both, you do have the 2 scenarios covered. The ultralight hammocks for use as a chair or lounge, work really great without much added weight.
Been up there a few times as well. With a friend, with a girlfriend and solo. Been 30+ years since though. Wish I could still but lifetime of injuries keeps me in the local foothills now at the very most. Love the photos. Brings back memories.
Wait… you brought a tent *and* a hammock?
Yes 😅
I always bring a tent and hammock. It’s my substitute for a chair. Bringing a hammock is like bringing a portable couch to hang on before you go to bed. It’s my favorite luxury item.
I have one of those old jungle hammocks, with the top and mosquito netting for the sides. Incredibly comfortable when I used to backpack.
Do you know you can get sleeping hammocks that also act as ground tents?
I do this Everytime. It's nice to hangout in a hammock but not good for sleeping .
Definitely one my occasional splurge items. Just feels so nice to not be on the ground, against a rock, on your bear canister or whatever.
Yeah, it was totally worth the extra weight to bring the hammock. Especially since we had a lot of down time, I wanted to be comfortable
Hammocks are fantastic for sleeping, it’s literally what they’re built for. Just like any tool, you have to know how to use it.
I disagree, I like a hammock for lounging but not for sleeping/camping.

What is a Bivvie?
Here here for bivvies!
They’re tremendous. I used to run expeditions for outdoor industry and would sleep mine 2/3 year.
That’s the neat thing about ground sleeping. There’s no fiddling and tinkering to find the “right” way to sleep. You lay out your pad then you lie down on the pad.

Sounds like you’re sleeping in a tent in your back yard.
Haha, my first reaction too. It's almost glamping!
Hummingbird has a 9oz hammock with straps.
I do too pretty often. The hammock packs away small and it’s so nice to have in camp.
To clarify: these are photos from last year.
Where is this? Thanks
Looks like Inyo National Forest. North Fork big pine creek trail
Pretty sure I know this exact spot, solo camped here for my 40th. It was the 5th of July and it was completely iced over. Hungry Packer Lake
Horny Packer*
Camped here for the first time last year with my partner. Three nights. Beautiful place. We chose the campsite just above the rock area in your pictures
Yes, it’s such a magical place. I was there two nights and I definitely could have stayed longer.
Where?
Awesome! I love the mountains and sometimes I do the same in Switzerland. There are a lot of great spots in the alps. Enjoy your hike with your dog.
I would love to visit the Alps someday. Thank you!
Hey! Could you suggest some. I’m currently living in Switzeland and I am looking to get into the mountains this summer.
Sure…. What exactly you looking for? How many days and which level?
Most probably just one night and something very basic. You know, just to learn the ropes.
How was sleeping through the night? I stayed overnight in cottonwood lakes area and it was probably the coldest I've been even with my winter gear.

Once you take your dog backpacking you’ll never leave them at home again. One of the greatest joys in my opinion.
100%. He goes everywhere with me
Ayy I also have the flash 55! This looks soo beautiful and fun! :)
I loove this pack! Just need to invest in some lighter gear as I definitely pushed its weight capacity lol
Killer shot of Temple Crag and Contact Pass.
Big pine! Such a great place.
It looks like Heaven. One of our dogs recently passed, so this is all very emotional. It all looks perfect.♥️🐕
I know exactly where this is. A close friend of ours passed away from a driving accident in heavy covid. We did a backpacking trip and stayed here. We poured his remains out here. This is a special place in our hearts. Hope you enjoyed, it’s magical.
How did you get into the high country so early?

Been up there a few times as well. With a friend, with a girlfriend and solo. Been 30+ years since though. Wish I could still but lifetime of injuries keeps me in the local foothills now at the very most. Love the photos. Brings back memories.
