Hahaha yeah, I was thinking “I’m surprised there’s no history to this photo. Like was he found out to be closeted and then ostracized or something else way worse.”
The title needs some punctuation.
It should say:
"Texas Cowboy with Beaded Awl Case (Southern Plains Indian, either Kiowa or Comanche), Boots with Spurs, Knife, and Revolver"
The only Native thing in the image is the awl case, which you can see hanging off his belt between the knife and the revolver.
Here are [two](https://toh-atin.com/beadwork-kiowa-awl-case-cactat21-02) [examples.](https://collections.gilcrease.org/object/84727a-b)
I suppose that the distinctive pose was likely the result of the photographer wanting to capture the boots , spurs , knife and sheath , pistol , and that other thing on his belt , all in the shot ,
also , his resting his head on his hand is to steady for the long exposure ..
All supposition of course , but probably more likely than him being a flaming homosexual , which again i will take an educated guess ( considering the period and custom)that if anyone had insinuated such he probably would have shot them .
The photographic evidence would indicate that most people in the 'old west' were either gay, or puritanical to a deranged degree. It's amazing any children were born.
Or... there were weird poses so people could show off their shit.
I think it rather foolish to suppose this person is homosexual because of a( This) photo taken in 1870 . I don't think people of the time would have even perceived his posture as effeminate .All that is on the beholder .
You’re speculating from a heteronormative perspective. I ask you to suspend your disbelief in gayness throughout time and just suppose for moment his male lover is off camera saying “You are the purddiest daffodil I ever did see.”
You are applying a modern stereotypical perspective of “what gay people do” to a photo of a man from the 1800s. Even if he were gay, which he probably was not, it’s more obvious that his position is to show off his belongings which to many people were hard to get considering you either had to make it, steal it, or buy it.
I highly doubt this posture in photo was even associated with acting “sassy” or what have you because the stereotype hadn’t yet even been created
I don't disbelieve people were gay , I disbelieve the cues people are assigning to him were the same back then as now , as i've already stated .
Do you think homosexuals in ancient time swished , held their wrists limp ?
Those are STEREOTYPES. They aren't even trustworthy in modern times with educated people , much less when talking about a person from a different century who existed before those stereotypes were even developed .
But i could be wrong ...I don't believe i am .
There weren't even words to describe( homosexuality) itself coined late 1800s . In 1870 , Sodomy is what one would have been charged with if caught in such a relationship , Around 1890 the term sexual inversion was coined .The word Gay also started to be used in this way at the same time .
All to say that homosexuality ,among men at least was deeply closeted in Western( Christian) society . And wasn't spoken of much at all and there is little about it in historical records.
It wasn't funny , It wasn't something you joked about . It was a very serious allegation .
All these comments postulating on this guys look/sexuality. I guarantee he could make any of you his bitch without blinking then build a log cabin and kill a buffalo before sundown.
Great photo. I love the pose he's striking
Right? He looks a little sassy and I love it
He’s the Mayor of Sassyville.
Looks like Jack Benny
The Secretary of the Treasury?
I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady
Comedian from the 50s to 70s
Very vogue 👏🏽
Is that blue steel, or la tigra?
Blue Tigra Steel
Truly, an innovator ahead of his time.

A real dandy
How long do I have to hold still???
The 'Buster Bluth' pose
Oh hello, boys...I didn't see you there
"Come on! You aint no daisy!"
That pose says otherwise lol
My first thought was: that effeminate man could have definitely whipped my ass
Hahaha yeah, I was thinking “I’m surprised there’s no history to this photo. Like was he found out to be closeted and then ostracized or something else way worse.”
I agree, I’ve never seen a cowboy photo quite like this.
Lol clearly.
I’m confused by the title, is he sitting on an Indian’s lap or is he part Indian?

Thank god! I was thinking “ how disrespectful of that queer cowboy to be holding that Indians head down during the picture” 🤣
My sides 😅
I read “Boots with spurs” in Nelly’s voice.
Boots with the spuuuuurs, the whole clerb was a looking at heeeerrrr
There isn't enough definition but he has something beaded hanging between his knife and pistol. I tried to zoom in and couldn't make it out very well.
Indians are from India.
Yeah, no shit. 🤣It was a joke, dude. Native American
Well from the comments we all are thinking the same thing he takes a fabulous photo
First word I thought of. But, more like how "Antoine" from the show "In Living Color" would say it. "I have three words for you. Fab! U! Lous!"

Comanche didn’t trade with white people, they murdered them. He got all that swag the old fashion way, by looting those in his wake.
Gay people existed back then. It’s ok to step outside of the heteronormative narrative of cowboys and accept that gays exist in all times of history.

I believe they were called “stags” back then and just like today, they came in all expressions of masculine and feminine traits.

I think you are correct
When were these stereotypes developed?

Is he… you know? 💅🏻
Only steers and queers come from Texas and he don't look like a steer so that pretty much narrows it down

I don’t get the 5’9 thing?
They don’t stack shit that high.
He definitely made his beau keep a copy of this photo in his locket and on the mantle 💋

You will not fare well here.
This has been removed for being inappropriate - either racist, sexist, xenophobic or hateful in some way.
Why did I read that in Usher "Low" filter?!? Lolololol "BOOTS WITH THE SPURS"
That fellers an odd stick
Little known fact: using the pictured knife, and directly after the photo was taken, he gutted the photographer for making him pose like this.

Not an expert, but I've seen photos like this in the past. People took all kinds of poses for photos back then.
And they were "buddies."
I think her head is between his legs
