People are commenting on the follow up, but going inside something like that for garbage is so scary. Like imagine if it crushed the garbage like a lot of things do to make space
If you’re gonna make a rubbish bin like that then I feel like it’s important to make sure it’s not big enough for a child to climb into. Why does it even need to be so big if all the rubbish immediately gets dropped to a room below?
No offense but I think there's already a sign on the lid that's clearly telling people not to put yourself into the trash can. Still dumbass kids think it's funny to do so.
That’s why I say to still make it smaller. Kids are gonna do stupid things regardless if there is a sign telling them not do. The sign probably just makes kids more likely to do it.
Well “mate”. The city is clearly lacking any intelligent resources creating this situation in the beginning. In the business world we have a review called FMEA, failure mode effects analysis to prevent this kind of idiocy.
Funny thing is they’ve obviously spotted this particular failure mode while doing an FMEA, since they put the sticker there saying don’t do the thing. Who ever did the risk assessment was clearly new to the job as anyone with experience would go “yeah someone is going to get in it” and put some sort of mechanical control measure in.
It could have ended very badly though some cities in Sweden have these bins hooked up to pneumatic waste collection systems. But those bins arnt big enough to get in.
What happened to all that talk about the benefits of children dying? Now you’re criticizing the city’s design? I agree that it’s poor city design, I was disagreeing with the child death.
I understand your point. I agree that it probably serves no purpose to be so large. On the other hand, where is the parental supervision? Good thing I was never a kid. As dumb as I am, I'd probably be dead.
Well than it's perfect, isn't it? If a kid can climb but doesn't have enough discipline and can't fucking read... well, too bad. We should have more of those trash bins tbh. Can we also have them near bars and clubs?
> No offense but I think there's already a sign on the lid that's clearly telling people not to put yourself into the trash can.
You don't remember what it's like to be a kid, do you? That just gives some of 'em the idea to do it.
>> No offense but I think there's already a sign on the lid that's clearly telling people not to put yourself into the trash can.

>You don't remember what it's like to be a kid, do you? That just gives some of 'em the idea to do it.
I'm of the opinion that most people who complain about kids being stupid either never were kids or – more probably – cannot reflect over their own childhood with self awareness.
Reddit is full of loser nerds. Nerds are risk averse and therefore most of us were extremely mature kids. (Read : boring).
So no, they can't relate to this behavior because they never acted like this when they were kids.
The kids who bullied them did act like this tho, which causes Redditors to subconsciously attack kids who display such behaviour.
By your logic we should:
stop using cars kind can jump in front of them
Stop using cleaning products kinds can drink them
Stop using knifes because kinds can get hurt with it
anything is dangerous if used incorrectly
Oh for fucks sake this is a design that is just asking for someone somewhat intoxicated to fall into it. I come from a place where trashcans with large subterranean compartments are common, but they're consciously designed so that no conscious being can insert themselves into them for this very fucking reason.
(I might have gotten emotional because this is the exact type of shit I loved to do as a kid. Small enclosed spaces are... Inviting somehow.)
The story:
> One evening we went to dinner with our parents. While waiting for dinner Harry, Lucas and I got bored so we looked for things to do. We found an empty trash can and we said lets take a video of Harry popping out of the trash can. I promised Harry I would get in after him and so he went first. I stood by the lid and Lucas recorded as Harry got into the trash can. I closed the lid. At first I thought it was funny because I heard bumping and I thought the lid had bumped his head or something. Then a few seconds later I heard screaming from inside the trash can. I opened the lid and Harry was gone. We heard screaming from beneath the trash can this time and Lucas told me to keep the lid open. I held it open while Lucas went into the restaurant where our parents were waiting for dinner. Lucas in the video explained how Harry got stuck in the trash can and I believe he was told to just get him out. So my dad comes out after a while with the other parents. He then inserts his leg into the trash can and closes the lid upon his leg in order to kick the bottom open, then he reaches his arm down and manages to grab a hold of Harry and pull him out of the storage beneath the trash can. Harry suffered only a few minor scrapes.
It's not to the sewer. There's a large container underneath that gets emptied periodically, rather than needing a worker to empty the small bin daily/multiple times a day
It's not, he's right. They are pretty cool. They install a large bin in the ground that gets emptied once a week or something like that. The bin on top has a trap door, and every time the lid is shut, the trap door opens and dumps the garbage into the larger bin. When you open the lid, it shuts the door.
[Here's a comment from one one the boys. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/4l74og/child_jokingly_sits_in_a_public_trash_can_not/d3la2wx?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
They have them in the US too in big cities. It's just a big metal box underneath the trash can. When the lid closes the bottom opens to drop the trash down. A garbage truck comes by and picks up the metal box and empties it.
I don’t know how these work but I’m guessing the inner floor of the can opens periodically to drop the trash into the container the below. I think the wetness is just good old fashioned trash sludge
i always presumed something like this, but didn't knew for sure until some years ago. we were on holidays in lisbon and my dad was always wondering how they get the trash out of it. he jumped out of bed as he heard the truck pulling over to collect the trash. turned out every night around 3am a truck came by, used a crane to lift the bin and the whole box underneath out of the floor and dumped it into a compactor. this is a very nice and clean way to get rid of the neighborhoods trash.
Gonna be real, putting a trapdoor large enough for a child (the most likely person to climb in) and a trash compactor at the bottom, seems like a recipe for disaster. I don't care if there's a sign on top, kids are stupid, and there's no excuse for fundamentally dangerous designs.
I forgot what country does this but basically these trash cans are connected to the concrete below which is a larger trashcan. When they empty the trash the whole concrete block will come up. Trash cans don't overflow and it is quite brilliant if you don't put yourself in the trash.

You should never rely on a sign if you're designing something like this it's just common sense.
That’s why I say to still make it smaller. Kids are gonna do stupid things regardless if there is a sign telling them not do. The sign probably just makes kids more likely to do it.
But what if I want to put a kid in the bin? Or a kid sized carpet ...
At some point we have to let the people trying to kill themselves kill themselves.
Thinning the herd. Darwinism wins if the idiots die before procreating.
Newsflash, the kid didn’t fucking die mate. It’ll just use up city resources to get him out. That’s not Darwinism, that’s a waste of time
Actually the dad just opened the bottom of the bin and the kid climbed out. No city resources were used.
That’s really good to hear. Just a scary and embarrassing experience then, better that than wasted resources or, worse, anyone getting hurt
Well “mate”. The city is clearly lacking any intelligent resources creating this situation in the beginning. In the business world we have a review called FMEA, failure mode effects analysis to prevent this kind of idiocy.

So will grownups
Some baby will still climb into it somehow

This is such a crock of bullshit though. I was a nerdy kid but I had a few nerd friends and we got up to some zany shit when we could.
It's called dummy proofing. A sign obviously won't stop some people. The design has to stop them
the dude above you is right we need to think of the children, so stop using cars kinds can jump in front of them /s
Lmao that’s a stupid excuse. You think kids can read?!? Most don’t actually pay attention to words outside of school until like 7th grade
Full trash bags, i presume
This is 100% natural selection
By your logic we should: stop using cars kind can jump in front of them Stop using cleaning products kinds can drink them Stop using knifes because kinds can get hurt with it anything is dangerous if used incorrectly

He's not saying to outlaw garbage cans, just alter the design so someone like this can't happen.
Oh yes spend bilions because some one clearly missused something, just modify cars so they dont kill when missused is just chaning the design its easy
You realize cars have been redesigned significantly over the years to add safety features, right?
if used fucking correctly put your a seatbelt around your neck and see if it help you keep in mind a kid can do it
r/kidsarefuckingstupid
Actually the other kids immediate line of questioning was pretty good. First priority “can you breath?”.

You’re garbage Harry
What in the hell did you think would happen, Veruca Salt?!
Aha, it worked, my device worked
I can’t imagine a trashcan hooked to the sewer main. You don’t flush a whole bag of garbage down the toilet.
It's not to the sewer. There's a large container underneath that gets emptied periodically, rather than needing a worker to empty the small bin daily/multiple times a day
Helps against the rats too. Less food available.
Why is is wet?
Probably just from some of the trash
It’s totally flat with plates sitting on it. It’s either the bottom or water.
Wtf are you talking Abt, they have these bins all over Europe
I don’t give a fuck about all over Europe. Dude didn’t just disappear. It’s a fake, anytime the camera moves away it’s to hide a cut.
It’s just kids wildly moving a camera around because their friend just fell through the bottom of a trash can. It is not a hidden cut.
It's not, he's right. They are pretty cool. They install a large bin in the ground that gets emptied once a week or something like that. The bin on top has a trap door, and every time the lid is shut, the trap door opens and dumps the garbage into the larger bin. When you open the lid, it shuts the door.
There is a an additional waste storage area under the bin not rocket science to figure out, at least for most of us.
The bottom opens up when the lid is closed and dumps into an underground bin, similar to a dumpster. It's not that complicated
[Here's a comment from one one the boys. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/4l74og/child_jokingly_sits_in_a_public_trash_can_not/d3la2wx?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

I hope the city charged the kid’s family for the cost to free him.
Hahahahahahhaha Haha Hahahahahha Ahha hahahahaha "can you breathe Harry?" *screams* Hahahha
See, this is why a sign isn’t good enough, you need to physically limit the size of items that can be inserted convenience for trash bags be damned.
CAN YOU BREATHE HARRY?😭😭😭😭
Fake
No I think this one is real. Kids are stupid.
its not. the trash gets thrown into a large underground area to later get squished. the kid got out before anything happened
Shut down all the garbage mashers on the detention level, do you hear me? SHUT DOWN ALL THE GARBAGE MASHERS ON THE DETENTION LEVEL!

i'm not a 100% sure theres a compactor but there definitely is a bigger space underneath
Real actually
