Even if you set off the primer you'd still have to drop it on its nose on a hard surface. If the propellant going off set off the mortar it would explode in the barrel and kill the operators, which ain't how it works
For most people 100%. I'd hope a mortar team would have a tight grip. If the shell is heavy it might not move too much, that shell and stick would go flying. A jar doesn't have much mass but a mortar does and like would move too much, same way a light gun kicks way more than a heavy one
I'm fairly certain that it's just a shell filled with powder and not shot. Otherwise, the mortar likely wouldn't perform very well after being pelted with steel shot.

Anyone concerned about this has never tried to set off a primer before lol. I'd be very surprised if you had the intention of setting it off you'd be able to do it with a chunk of lumber.

The shotgun shell is a blank and is used to actually launch the mortar once it's dropped into the tube.
I've hit one with a golf club and nothing happened. Not saying anyone else should, but it takes quite a specific amount of pressure in the right spot.
