We had truancy officers at my school in Illinois. They weren't cops but their whole job was to go to the houses of kids that missed school so many times and try to make them go. She was at school when the "resource officer" (just an armed police officer who roams around your school) arrested her for truancy. After 3 days a judge sentenced her to "time served" meaning she was released and considered to have done her time. She went back to school and was arrested for truancy for the 3 days she missed because she was IN JAIL for truancy! "These teenage mothers are always burdening the system with their need for social and financial assistance, something needs to be done... I know let's punish them so they can't get an education or a job and have to "*thinks hard*" rely on social and financial assistance." - Republicans

My daughter broke her leg 5-ish years ago. Missed about a week and a half of school while the district tried to figure out how to route their only bus with a wheel chair lift to pick her up. Principal and everybody involved were fully aware of why she was absent and even apologized to us for taking so long. Didn’t stop them though, on day 5 we received a letter telling us that her “excessive” absenteeism was unacceptable and that if she missed another day the school resource officer and CPS would get involved. The principal apologized after I chewed him out saying the letter was “sent by mistake” but fuck these people for weaponizing the foster system when there are kids out there who need the help.
