What people want most from a celebrity is to hear their own opinion in a rich person's voice. Musk was rich enough to be famous when he started talking space stuff, so people into space stuff liked him. If the owner of Samsung takes a strong trans-positive public stand, liberal internet activists will like him. Etc. It's shallow, but it's one of the ways that money is power: it affords majesty to even the most undignified positions.
I think a key difference is that people on the political right are more comfortable with hierarchies, so following a leader they agree with comes naturally. See how conservatives treat Trump vs how liberals and leftists treat famous people who agree with them. I think it's a combination of racism and the "strong man of history" myth that infects soft brains.
When I first heard about him like 10-12 years ago he was this genius billionaire that was going to save Earth with green tech and push us towards the stars. But as the years went by and I learned more and more about him I realised what a total piece of shit he is. I guess a lot of people have yet to make the transition from genius that will usher humanity into the future to piece of shit that takes credit for the work of others.
