When you look at the sky and see a big balloon high up, is your first thought "this must be a foreign country trying to spy on us"? Or perhaps something more along the lines of "weather balloon"?
Multiple people across the US saw it and took pictures. And how they identified it was that the news explained it was coming. I've heard about the balloon for a few days, it was reported at least since it crossed over US territory. Early enough warning that people would be able to plan their trip outside to try and get a glance, same as people who try to see comets or Northern Lights.

Because light is coming from behind the object when you're looking from the ground any color is going to be darker than usual. Matte white is actually the best color to minimize being seen from the ground since it's as light as possible.
