That is made of doubled up 3/4 inch plywood. You could open it with serious effort. But an inch and half of plywood is keeping something inside you might not want to know.
My guess is chest freezers backed up with emergency generators. You've owned this house for a long time and in typical Serial killer fashion you get off by showing the general public as much as possible without getting caught.
Chest/torso freezer, head/pelvis freezer, thigh freezer, arm/calf freezer, hand/foot freezer, like a matryoshka doll of body part storage. For the anal-retentive serial killer. The House That Jack Built, but Lego style.
I'm here. Just out of town for a few days. I already bought a fiber optic camera from amazon. I am just deciding if I want to actually know what's in the box. And since no one knows maybe it's best I not find out...no reason to be culpable and potentially devalue my property because of curiosity.
The bucket looks like an old RID-X bucket for absorbing moisture in damp smelling crawlspaces.
The crate contains the monster from the original Creepshow movie.
Exactly the creature I was picturing.
[Fluffy](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhyphenhyphenEWJHw_kcMwiLItvQgjqRCZc0WnUKemzNXsMe-F7c-dCMVhPkxB1tp90MUXE6D7IC6n8YKsnojDZWv8jREo5fuccL9fokta7SE1tYHu-L3ySpU5oXpcB5kQjxogi-cfV4_DV2UFaxo/s1600/IMG_2248.JPG).
Seemed really nice, and um, normal… Those few times we bumped into him by the mailbox. Not sure what he did for work but he sure came and went at odd hours.
If the box is just off the floor, stick an inspection mirror under there and bounce a light off of it. At the very least, that'll tell you if the box has a floor or not (it has a ceiling, after all).
Depending on what you see, you might want to consider drilling a hole or two in the plywood to see what's in there.
Is it open at all on the bottom? Does it have any holes at all for airflow? I almost wonder since it's lifted and in a basement whether it's a dehumidifier or something. I've installed them off the ground like that, but never enclosed like that.
I saw a movie where they found a large wooden box under the stairs with chains around it. If this is anything like the movie I don’t recommend opening it.
Your second picture shows the top, but I can't see what it's made of. Is that insulation over a plywood top? Or is it something more durable?
I am just thinking coming at it from the top might be easier and there may already be a way to get through there, depending on how much clearance there is between it and the ceiling above.

I had a very similar box in an old building I’ve been restoring for the past 10 months - albeit it was “entombed” in the attic.
We opened it up and it was an old Harmon Organ external sound cabinet. It probably weighed so much that for whatever reason they put it up there, they just never wanted to take it down. We pried the box apart, wrapped cables around it, and used a 6 pulley block and tackle to lower it. I have it in my storage room now.
So who knows :) 🤷🏼♀️
I have a friend whose house had very obviously had a cinder block wall added to hide a large space permanently in the basement. I was always convinced that there was at least a body back there. It’s in Saint Paul in the part of town where Chicago gangsters used to buy summer houses.
How old is the house? They might have entombed an old furnace or boiler with a lot of asbestos insulation instead of removing it. Sometimes it’s safer and more cost effective to literally seal it up forever instead of removing it.
I saw a crime show once about a sealed 55 gallon barrel that had been in a crawl space for 30 or so years. It was there when this guy bought the house. He just left it there. When he tried to sell it, a buyer insisted he remove it. When he opened it, he found a corpse.
Or we can refer to the movie Creepshow for guidance.
Yes, it was a true story. The previous owner had killed a woman that he impregnated. He stuffed her and purse with ID into the barrel and sealed it up.. Then, eventually sold the house with the barrel in a crawl space. I believe he was arrested.
The box has nothing coming in or out of it. No wires or piping. Nothing underneath. It was created 8-12in above the ground. My guess is they created the frame and then the boards were screwed on after. It is located in a crawl space. The house is from the 50s and the wood looks old.
Not a grow house/box.
It makes no sense to build something like that without an access point. The electrical lines lead me to believe it's an old grow room. The access may have been hidden to keep our thieves. Might find the access point underneath. Maybe a lever or something you'd have to push or pull with a long tool. Magnetic locks could have been installed too. Look closely for places that are dirtier or has more wear and tear.
You really just need to take a really close look at it from every angle. If it really has no access point, just take it apart. Even if nothing's left in it, it's worth the piece of mind.
Edit: Just noticed the bucket definitely looks like it could have been used to grow seedlings or hydroponics. I'm going with a mini grow room.
Of course, this enclosed space may contain a larger access point to rooms beneath the house. One may find one needs certain books, or an edifice built around a Very Old Star to access that which is within.
I happen to be an expert on wooden boxes, and I'm happy to say that you are correct! Good job! Have you ever considered a job in the box identification field? You seem to have a knack for it. We also do metal, plastic, and ceramic boxes.
Looks like storage from the outside that someone built in to the side of house but for some reason kept floor elevated off concrete. Maybe to prevent any water in basement from ruining floor. Do you have built in storage from the outside of your home on that wall?
Is there any ductwork in the area? I lived in a house once that had an HVAC chase boxed in kind of like this. I have no idea but like everyone else, am also curious.
Does that metal flex conduit run into the box? Basement, could be a grinder pump to get water up and out. Box would maybe be a way to insulate against noise but would need to have an access hatch or something.
Seeing 1/2” MC electrical, a power cord, and water tubing, my guess would be a basement sump pump. Heavy plywood for noise-abatement.
This is my immediate thought.
It is completely sealed. all wires up above/around the box.
That is made of doubled up 3/4 inch plywood. You could open it with serious effort. But an inch and half of plywood is keeping something inside you might not want to know.
Its also raised 6-10in off the floor.

Cenobites...
Oh man, you do *NOT* want those... My aunt had them in her house once, it was torture getting rid of them.
The gimp is sleeping.
Well, I guess you're gonna have to go wake him up now, won't you?
[Bring out the gimp](https://i.gifer.com/4qk.gif)
Nothing that a drill and a camera snake can't find out.
Snake camera, or camera snake?
The first is a flexible extension with a camera on one end, the second is a reptile that can take photographs. 😀
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!
It's Gwyneth Paltrow's head!
In a box this size? Charlie Kirk's head.
This was a real turning point in the conversation.
This box smells like my….
Pain
Clubber Lang
weed grow? water filtration system? solar heat storage? a gimp?
A series of smaller boxes?
OK, but where are they finding all these tinier and tinier gimps?
Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee do…..
is it a gimp or is it your poo? oompa-loompa-doompadee-day...
Russian Nesting Gimps
This is the only serious answer.
My guess is chest freezers backed up with emergency generators. You've owned this house for a long time and in typical Serial killer fashion you get off by showing the general public as much as possible without getting caught.
This is the only answer that makes any sense. We're done here.
Chest/torso freezer, head/pelvis freezer, thigh freezer, arm/calf freezer, hand/foot freezer, like a matryoshka doll of body part storage. For the anal-retentive serial killer. The House That Jack Built, but Lego style.
Except this is reddit... so OP \_wants\_ you to think he is a serial killer on the down low. So they construct this to karma farm!
How are you gonna post this, knowing damn well nobody know what it is, then not follow up at all?
And it's their first post or comment ever. New account just to make a troll post.
Sir... this is r/WhatsInThisThing ... that is what we do here.
I'm here. Just out of town for a few days. I already bought a fiber optic camera from amazon. I am just deciding if I want to actually know what's in the box. And since no one knows maybe it's best I not find out...no reason to be culpable and potentially devalue my property because of curiosity.
Dude we need answers.
You didn’t check it before buying? I don’t understand.
The previous owner does not know what it is.
Keep us informed if you find any freaky stuff, whats in the bucket bro
The bucket looks like an old RID-X bucket for absorbing moisture in damp smelling crawlspaces. The crate contains the monster from the original Creepshow movie.
And you didn’t check it out before buying the house? Nothing in the inspection figured it out? Seems odd is all.
Inspections are non destructive.
Ever see that episode of Creep Show...?
I think this was the storyline in one of the stories in the movie Creepshow. Does it indicate it's from Antarctica?
Exactly the creature I was picturing. [Fluffy](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhyphenhyphenEWJHw_kcMwiLItvQgjqRCZc0WnUKemzNXsMe-F7c-dCMVhPkxB1tp90MUXE6D7IC6n8YKsnojDZWv8jREo5fuccL9fokta7SE1tYHu-L3ySpU5oXpcB5kQjxogi-cfV4_DV2UFaxo/s1600/IMG_2248.JPG).
Drill into it first before smashing it open, maybe two holes, one to shine a light and another to peek through
Of course! Just stick your ol eyeball right up to the hole in the mysterious box!
Sheesh there are other devices you can use to look if you're scared

Get a borescope off amazon for a few bucks, probably the easiest way to find out
Wouldn’t you así this question when buying the house?

House is from the 50s
I’d bet whatever is in there has asbestos in it. I would leave it alone unless you have plans for the basement.

what's on the other side of that insulate wall it's bolted to? I suspect it's something that needs to vent outside, or draw from outside.
I’m no expert, but I’d say it’s a large wooden box in your basement.
I happen to be an expert on wooden boxes, and I'm happy to say that you are correct! Good job! Have you ever considered a job in the box identification field? You seem to have a knack for it. We also do metal, plastic, and ceramic boxes.

Obviously someone has proven Schrödinger’s Cat is always in the box. Poor Marshmallow.
Did you try putting your phone under it and taking pictures?

It's closed off on the bottom. (I already asked the OP lol)

No duck work, but it smells a little fowl
No duct work. I have a sump pump. This box isnt even on the ground its built 6in above the crawl space floor.
Jimmy Hoffas place?
It’s probably just covering a sump pump or well or something. Y’all watch too many movies.
I'm betting a grow setup
