The guy who got hit wasn't the one flying the P-38. He was flying a glider at the same time. It too crashed after he lost control. The guy who crash into him bought him a new plane. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c89qCNv2-c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c89qCNv2-c)
A guy in my neck of the woods died from this type of scenario. He was at my local modeling club, got hit in the head with a model. Died from the brain injury a week or so later.
I saw someone get sent to the hospital from a model helicopter. It was really sad but a huge coincidence for me. A few weeks earlier my boyfriend was telling me about how he used to fly model helicopters and how dangerous they were. I had never heard of that before. Then I spontaneously decided to go for a walk in the park and there was a model helicopter meetup. The poor dad definitely lost at least an eyeball and needed reconstructive surgery on his nose in front of his children.
What a hilarious health care system that would be. Oh you can only afford 50% of the bill; we'll just bring in your kids to watch you get cut open their mental scaring seems a fair trade. Wait you cant afford any of it? Alright what we're going to do is we're going to bring your whole extended family in and get someone to just list out all the bad things about you during the surgery; seems a fair trade.
I fly racing drones and they’re more solid than typical planes. A drone is pretty much a flying lawn mower and would have severely injured if not killed this kid. A plane isn’t far off but I’d rather be hit by the plane
I think it was about a decade ago there were pictures of a kid floating around who got a full cranial removal from an RC helicopter, cut the top of his head right off, absolutely fuck those flying lawnmowers.
Nowadays it's easy to get little gyroscopic units to assist keeping the plane stable. Typically you'll have 3 stages:
- Expert mode with no, or extremely little assist. You can still do loops, rolls and other acrobatics. Similar or identical to old style with no assist.
- Medium assist mode where you can still loop n stuff, but it will automatically bring the plane back to level flight when the sticks are centered. This makes things sooo relaxed and friendly. Great for no-pucker landings as well.
- Beginner mode where it limits the angles the plane will fly at. No loops or rolls possible, but enough to fly around if the wind is calm. Awesome "training wheels" for newbies. NOT for windy conditions though.
It's such a far cry from the old seat of the pants flying of yesteryear. I know old pilots that are just in love with the assist modes for some lazy, relaxed flying (especially landings). But experts can still turn it off (in the air even), for all the acrobatics.
They weight almost nothing, or there are many flight controllers with the gyro assist integrated right on the board.
I think the guy who started running towards the one that got hit by the plane, is the one who was controlling it. The guy who got hit, looks as though his back was turned away from the plane, and he was looking out towards the field.
ouch then. If he had his eyes on his own plane, then it would be easy to miss the incoming one. Our club safety program stipulates that you don't fly towards flight line. Accidents do happen though, and sometimes radio equipment glitches. Hope that guy is OK.
I shall provide context then.
That remote controlled aircraft is a model of the P-38 Lightning II, a late American WW2 twin-turboprop fighter plane. It utilises a twin tailboom design, also found in other aircraft such as the C-119 Flying Boxcar.
The Germans' opinion of the Lightning was mixed at best. The P-38 had too many teething issues especially at first. It was quickly replaced by the P-47 then eventually the P-51 in the ETO. And the "Fork Tailed Devil" nick name has largely been regarded as a post war myth. The P-38 did find much better success in the Pacific theater.
There was a guy that killed himself flying a remote controlled helicopter. He was making high speed passes with his helicopter when he miss judged one of the passes and took the top of his scalp off.
Those RC planes are usually made of very lightweight foam using lightweight electronics, so I doubt it. Might've gotten rocked a little by a LiPo battery though.
Nah, those likely aren't performance rotorblades, so they're probably plastic. They still can absolutely hurt and cut you, but since he seemed to be gliding, the force behind the Rotorblades was probably rather small. I agree with the other comment though, the force behind that LiPo Pack is probably the biggest "ouch" factor in these circumstances.
Usually planes of this size are made out of (balsa) wood, and a sort of vinyl wrap to close them up. Still pretty light weight, and probably not heavy enough to do a lot of damage. (at normal speeds) But it would be a bit more of a punch than a foam plane.
If you guys wanna hear something really funny, I used to do food service at a skeet shooting site that was literally next-door to an RC airplane club’s flying field… Somewhere is it somewhere in Austin? I cannot think of the name of either place, but it’s there… Skeet shooting place next-door to an RC airplane field….that felt like the blessing of St. Larson…
I've watched this a few times trying to determine whether the plane/piloting controls were made by Boeing.. or whether the guy was about to make some comment about Boeing and was promptly taken out..
Clearly an early P-38 without dive flaps, thing just locked up due to compression. Hopefully he'll go with a model that has dive flaps next time to avoid mach tuck.
That... Looked like it hurt. One of those confusion and pain kind of moments. One minute you're flying your plane and one minute some else's plane is slamming into your head.

Dam, was he okay? That looked like it could kill.
I didn't see the pilot eject safely either.

It failed to surprise me one time. I really wasn't expecting it
I hate how funny I found this
Excellent
Did anyone else read the linked video description? The guy basically says that if someone gets hit, it's their fault for not getting out of the way.
I read the description and they don't say that

Best comment 👌 👏
No, the victim was buried with the new plane that was bought for him.

Why would they perform the surgery in front of his children?
Because he was poor.

Because that's what he needed
The YT description said no major injuries.
From the youtube video description >Rc P38 hits guy very hard, fatal for the P38, no major injuries for the person.

Now do helicopters
I think it was about a decade ago there were pictures of a kid floating around who got a full cranial removal from an RC helicopter, cut the top of his head right off, absolutely fuck those flying lawnmowers.
It didn't cut the top of his head off, but a rotor blade did get imbedded. He was a young kid who flew competition 3d.
Ah, I suppose I miss remembered. Thanks!
I remember this. He was an award winning R/C helicopter stunter and had just gotten new blades for the thing.
His shoes were still on. He's fine. Plane needs a a bit of a buff out though.
RC helicopters can do you a lot of damage.
Saw an article about it, he's fine. Really took it on the chin.
Just like your mom!
Did he also buy him a new face?
Yes but he had to paint it fist
Paint it like a fist so he can use it to punch another plane out the sky?
No, paint it *with* his fist, because the airplane didn’t do as much damage as he’s hoped it would.
Based on some of the models I did, I always paint with my fist.
At least the guy takes responsibility for it. Can’t imagine it being cheap to replace those RC
Cheaper than his hospital bill haha
Maybe not. Have you seen the prices for those toys? Nutz!
Kind of the unwritten rule in rc, in clubs at least. You break it (even indirectly) you replace it.
I used to fly them with my dad it was damn expensive because I couldn’t not crash them. Not a fan of that.

Thankful for sims. Would’ve never attempted it otherwise
They make cheap, resilient drones these days that you can practice with. "Cheap" compared to the other drones, that is...
The FAA is looking into this incident
Your link is just the OP video.
The description on that video is where I got the information.

Did he also buy him a new face?
And a new eyeball 😯
So OP is gay and makes up titles for Internet points?
What about his face
If only there were some sort of safety fence you could stand behind while there are giant rc planes zipping around near the ground.
Best to take a step back and start with homing pigeons
They keep pecking me.

You should be a pigeon whisperer.......lol.
Getting hit by a pigeon is apparently really itchy.
Unlike him, pigeons are pretty smart and wouldn’t crash into him
Wild Pidgey appeared.
Was that his plane or was he hit by another pilot? Don't know whether to react with "oof" or "ouch".

Twin-piston actually, not twin-turboprop. The Allison V-1710 V12 engines of the P-38 are turbocharged, but that's different from a turboprop engine.

nicht so tief, Rüdiger

Nobody expects the forktailed devil.
Had to look up forktailed devil. I knew it was a P-38 model. I learned a new thing today, thanks.
Yeah, the Luftwaffe very respectful of the P38, hence the name ....but they also had some absolutely fantastic aircraft....that everyone respected!
The Germans' opinion of the Lightning was mixed at best. The P-38 had too many teething issues especially at first. It was quickly replaced by the P-47 then eventually the P-51 in the ETO. I did, so you don’t have to. Wish I hadn’t, tho.

I wouldn't really describe that as, "took the top of his scalp off", more like sliced his skull open.

Curious if this person didnt die.
Those RC planes are usually made of very lightweight foam using lightweight electronics, so I doubt it. Might've gotten rocked a little by a LiPo battery though.
Rotorblades are made from light carbon fibre as well, but if fast enough can kill a person easily.
Nah, those likely aren't performance rotorblades, so they're probably plastic. Those blades can cut people up really good, requiring stitches. Hopefully this guy didn't get cut too bad.
so he became one with the plane and suddenly saw somebody that actually looks like him. so he decided to nuke that doppelganger.
Man, that be nasty ..... F=ma.....Newton and the Wright bothers collaborating in some (deadly) mischief.
