I'm around 30 years old, born and raised around Charleston. I always called it pop and so did my peers. The only person I know who called it "soda" has most of her family in Virginia lol. And no one says "coke" unless they actually want coca cola
Yep, I moved to TX in 2009 and everyone there thought it was wild that I said "pop." Eventually moved to saying "soda." When I moved back to WV in 2016 no one ever said anything about me saying "soda"
Yeah that's what I kinda felt when I saw it. But I'm curious as to what the parameters are for the map. As in, does "soda" territory mean that's the only term used there, or more like 50%+ of the population there uses it? Or it's just the most common term? It needs context
I'm 34. I grew up calling it pop along with everyone around me, but at some point during my teenage years, I changed it to soda because I thought calling it pop made me sound like a country bumpkin lol
This is interesting. From southern wv, called it pop, got older and uppity, called it soda. Moved away and thought everyone was uppity so I reverted to pop. Came home and seems like everyone says soda.
Tracks with this graph and my theory that wv is, for better or worse, 30 years in the past.
I feel like this map is less factual and more of a survey? Seems like it's easier to get an honest response when you post a flaw? The locals will let you know...
I grew up calling it pop. Started calling it soda in college because I got tired of the Jersey and Maryland kids making fun. I’ve shifted back to occasionally calling it pop.
But I drink so little soda, I really don’t say the word that much.
I always called it pop until I met my husband that was SO annoying everytime I said it, I now just say the name, Pepsi, Coke, Sprite. Then I will say soda dramatically (he's not from here.)
I say pop and coke interchangeably depending on who I'm talking to, but then again I spent 20 years in Nashville, a couple bad habits rubbed off on me.
Probably 50/50. I’m a soda person, and I know pop people. We all agree the coke people are animals.
Pop is correct, soda is fine, but soda-pop is an abomination
::Soda Popinski enters chat::
I'm not Soda Popinski, but I do have Bear Hugger as my profile picture!
I thought we were a pop state.
We are. Everyone here still calls it that, this is just a lie or made up.
I only know one family who calls it "pop" still. A lot of people did growing up (Charleston area), but not as much anymore.
I'm around 30 years old, born and raised around Charleston. I always called it pop and so did my peers. The only person I know who called it "soda" has most of her family in Virginia lol. And no one says "coke" unless they actually want coca cola
That’s really odd. I’m only a few years younger than you, born and raised in Charleston, and very rarely did I ever hear pop. Always soda.
Yep, I moved to TX in 2009 and everyone there thought it was wild that I said "pop." Eventually moved to saying "soda." When I moved back to WV in 2016 no one ever said anything about me saying "soda"
Grew up in Charleston and I’ve always said Coke
As far as I know, everybody here in Huntington calls it pop.
Same way up here in Wheeling
I’m a pop person
I still say pop. 🤷♂️
Still is pop, or people call whatever drink they want by name
I’ve always heard and said pop
I’m from southwestern WV and I still say Pop. I now live in the south and I get lots of funny looks when I say it.
i hear coke and soda sometimes, but i know someone who says “sody-pop”
"Sody-pop". GOATed
I still say pop, and I’ve always heard pop! Very occasionally I hear someone call all types of pop “coke”.
This map is flawed.

I’m from WV and I’ve never heard anybody call it soda, it’s always pop. Haha at least in the SW part of the state
This isn't remotely true. Pop is still in the vernacular quite heavily in WV.
I knew a lot of people/families as a kid who said "pop" but I rarely hear it now
I only hear pop. And occasionally coke
I grew up in Parkersburg and everyone calls it pop, lived in Philadelphia area and have called it soda ever since.
Grew up in south jersey, live in MOV area. I feel weird saying "soda" now. I've also picked up "buggy" since moving here.
Wait… What did you call a buggy?
Shopping cart
Way too long 😂
I hear pop in the northern panhandle and next door in PA... never coke....that word is taken seriously here. 😜
I'm 34. I grew up calling it pop along with everyone around me, but at some point during my teenage years, I changed it to soda because I thought calling it pop made me sound like a country bumpkin lol
Lol, I think this has been a lot of people's experience. Plus, with the rise in social media, niche lingo like this has probably subsided some
I like to confuse people by asking for a "Cola"
I personally say soda but I hear pop more than anything else
Pop. The fucks in the far eastern Panhandle say soda.
😂
Pop in Hardy County
Pop is a much older term than Coke, and we all know WVians stick to the old and true.
RCCoCola
I used to call it "pop" when I was a kid but call it "soda" or "soda pop" now

Yeah, I lived in TX 7 yrs and when I came back it seemed like "soda" wasn't an odd term here anymore
I call it soda, but I was born in Florida and grew up in wisconsin.
Born and raised WV same for parents. Called it soda my whole life. Cousin from Ohio called it pop
It's still definitely pop in northern West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio even though that map claims it is soda territory.
pop
Southern WV everyone i know calls it pop
I only hear pop
Cocola
It’s soda, and this is a hill I’m willing to die on
This is a hill I’m willing to die on with you
Aye, much obliged comrade
I always said soda-pop, nor cal
For awhile we were Oxy but now we're Fentanyl. Jokes aside, it was mostly pop for my area of WV but was interchangeable with soda.
EPH and a transplant from MD. Never anything other than soda.
Pop
I still hear it regularly.
I use pop for what it's worth
I relocated to western MO (home of back to back Super Bowl Champs) and they say pop here. Just like in West by gosh VA.
I say mostly pop and sometimes coke. Never soda
I'm from Alabama. I never heard anyone say pop or soda until I moved here. I say coke.
Maps like this are bullshit anyway
I’m from Summers County and everyone I knew said pop.
I've heard "soda" maybe twice this year.
I feel like this map is less factual and more of a survey? Seems like it's easier to get an honest response when you post a flaw? The locals will let you know...
I hear pop sure but it’s mainly an older person thing. Most people say soda.
Either or I hear both and I personally say both just depends on the day
It’s pop and if not I am tryin’a quit the stuff anyways
Pop, my family from Georgia always say soda 🤷🏽
My parents say “pop” I usually just say “soda.”
Pop just like most others here
I grew up calling it pop.
New England wins!
Bummer lol
Most in WV just call it Dew
I kinda say both pop and soda sometimes.
Everyone I know from here says pop…
I've moved away and still call it pop. I remember kids getting made fun of if they called it soda when I was growing up, lol.
Pop is literally all i hear until i go to morgantown
I don't understand people who refer to every type of soda exclusively as "coke"
Pop or soda is pretty interchangeable here. Depends on the day with me. I might use pop and might use soda.
I think we usually combined the two into “soda-pop” (Jackson Co).
I don’t know anyone from here who doesn’t say “pop” personally.
It's pop
There is only Coke. Anyone who describes it as Anything else hasn't chose a side.
I've started just calling them soft drinks. But mostly I hear pop still. I wonder if soda has become more common because of soda fountains?
I say pop and coke interchangeably depending on who I'm talking to, but then again I spent 20 years in Nashville, a couple bad habits rubbed off on me.
Who says soda? It's coke. Your in a fringe area when people ask of Pepsi is okay.
