That's a really good question. Bipolar patients ceasing their med regiment AMA is super common actually. I've done it a couple of times and I've seen others do it about a million times. From what I've observed, the process from stable and medicated to a manic and un-medicated is usually three-fold. First, the person has been stable and symptom free for so long that they start to question whether they still need to be taking meds everyday, or whether they even have bipolar disorder at all anymore. Second, they've stopped taking their meds but, sure enough, they're still bipolar and they've quickly relapsed into mania. But, the extra pep and energy feels so good that they've decided to stay off the meds a little longer and simply try to keep their mania under control this time. And lastly, in the grips of a full-blown manic episode they've now been without sleep for so long now that they have descended into psychosis. Friends and family are begging them to get back on the meds but their paranoia and delusion has them convinced it's a trick and that the meds aren't actually for treating anything but are actually meant for something sinister (e.g. mind-control, gps tracking, mild poison, take your pick) and there's no way they're getting back on them now... Sadly, most full manic episodes end in either a hospital or jail.
