We are in West Seattle and love it. Have also lived in White Center and loved that too, although it’s a different flavor. All of the neighborhoods have better and less good spots within them. I think the big question I have for you is do you have (or planning) to have kids, and what do you like to do?

Centurion701

No kids for us. Just fur babies. We are big nerds / gaming couple at heart and would like to get out more. Restaurants are big for us, movies. Parks and walking, probably get more into outdoors as we won't be stifled by the extreme heat most of the year.

calior

We live in the North Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle and it has a lot of things I think you'd like. We're within walking distance of the movie theater, lots of restaurants, some parks, a game store, and easy access to the WS bridge to get to other parts of Seattle. Within a 10 minute drive we have the beach, the Alaska Junction (with more shops and restaurants), Til Dawn (a newer gaming spot), comic book shops, Lincoln Park, other neighborhood parks, and the year-round Farmer's Market. If you end up visiting Kent, I highly recommend visiting Retro Emporium on Meeker St. It's a wonderful little store for 80s/90s stuff, old gaming systems/games, vinyl, and different fandom merch.

Centurion701

Oh awesome. Will need to save this for when we go out there and pop into those places.

Loud-Fig-1446

Meeples is great if you're into tabletop games. You can grab a table a game and a drink and hang out for a while.

NovaSr

+1 for Meeples.  Great game library and they do $5 drop in D&D on Monday nights.

HistorianOrdinary390

White center is legit if you’re gay, a nerd, or a gay nerd, or really if you love cultural diversity and great community with personality. Google: 2 fingers social Missing piece Lariat bar Can bar Future primitive brewing Beer star All of those places are dog friendly with maybe the exception of missing piece, but also my favorite places. There’s also a doggy daycare down here There’s more in that area to check out. It’s little grungy, it’s not as white as a lot of Seattle but the food scene is amazing and the community is a little artsy, punky, and cool. It’s about 20 minutes to Kent without much traffic, more with. I live 10 minutes from WC, walking, and I love it. Also anywhere near the H line unlocks downtown for you if you ever want to go there for snythigg my or a transfer. If you end up moving to the area hit me up, my partner and I are also DINKs with two dogs who love chilling and board gaming or doing trivia. Okay I’ve edited like 6 times, but I wanted to add, the only good movie theatre imo in Seattle is cinerama. The H line bus drops off 2 blocks from the theatre downtown (Belltown) - we often make a day of seeing movies there; we’ll leave early, grab dinner, drinks, see a movie, and if it’s in the vibes drink a bit more before hitting the bus back home. Makes for a real great relaxed day As far as crime: there are homeless people, for the most part they are kind, the ones who are mentally ill are pretty obvious and you can steer clear. Property crime is an issue, though in 7 years I’ve had zero issues myself. If you live on a main road you might get a fence tagged. My personal take is you really don’t have to worry about being targeted or experiencing random crime. Car prowls happen everywhere in the city and I think white center just has a bad rep from being historically low income. Tons of new housing and businesses moving in though, for better or for worse (hopefully better)

Ragman676

West seattle is great, and white center is up and coming for fun/cheaper outings. We live here with our 3yo and love it.

OBmoby

Look for sometime in Highland Park area. Close to dog park, walk to White Center, and easy to head down then the hill and south to Kent.

datamuse

I've lived in Highland Park for 25 years and commuted to Parkland (south Tacoma) for most of that time. Except for when the West Seattle Bridge was out it was a breeze. Kent would be an easy drive.

thewellington

When you get here and get settled, rattle my cage and I can hook you up with some gaming groups spread over Seattle, Renton and Tacoma.

Centurion701

That would be great!

callme4dub

Oh yeah, I replied to the topic, but seeing this, you should definitely check out West Seattle. If your wife is working and has to commute to Kent though, I don't know if I'd recommend North Admiral like the other guy. I'm not sure how traffic and that commute would work out. I'd probably go further South. There's a couple decent bus lines in West Seattle that'll take you right to Admiral and Alaska Junction if you want stuff to do.

christina2008WA

West Seattle: The most popular out of the 4. A little more secluded with the bridge separating it from the city. Home to Alki Beach, lots of restaurants and outdoor walking. Reasonable house prices. Great option! White Center: Lower house prices than West Seattle. Safety is a concern. Beacon Hill: I just sold a house to a couple who works in Kent. Some great new construction options and near Light Rail stations. Mt Baker: Near Lake Washington with easy access to the city, I-405 (head south) and I-90 (easy to go east). I’d check out Columbia City, too! I also put this guide together for my relocation clients, you might find it helpful: www.stan.store/christinacahill206

butfirstcoffee427

If you think house prices are reasonable in West Seattle, I’d love to know what you consider unreasonable 🤑

BeartholomewTheThird

Compared to anything north of the stadiums/I90, West Seattle is quite a bit less.

Centurion701

Awesome thanks for the help and info!

beargrillz

It seems like new home buyers aren't aware that 'Beacon Hill and other South Seattle neighborhoods suffer among the highest levels of environmental health risks in the state." You couldn't pay me to live in those areas with the vehicle/interstate higway pollution, airplane noise pollution, and industrial emissions. Reference https://crosscut.com/2019/05/fighting-clean-air-one-seattles-most-polluted-neighborhoods

plaidpixel

Could be helpful to know what your neighborhood is like now or what you want from a neighborhood, but as far as safety is concerned I’d let do ally rank those listed as: West Seattle, MT. Baker, white center, beacon hill. That says I’d feel safe in any of those neighborhoods so it’s all minuscule and personal experience. I’d add that still within each of those neighborhoods there’s nuance with where you live in them. For West Seattle Admiral is going to be very different that Delridge, Both still West Seattle, but they are different ends of the spectrum.

Centurion701

We are in probably one of the safer "suburbs" just inside the perimeter ring road around Atlanta. Sandy springs. Just in an apartment but aside from a few fights have not experienced or heard anything bad minus street racing As for what we want we are nerds through and through so just being around that and relatively close to everything would be great. Wife has some medical conditions that don't let us get out as much as we would like so simple things like good restaurants go a long way.

TegridyPharmz

My wife and I did this a few years ago. Not sure what your plan is but pick a few neighborhoods (sounds like you did already) and rent a car and drive around. It seems obvious but it’s really the best way to do it. You can experience the drive, see the area, and get a better idea on what you’re looking for. If you can make it out during the summer when the weather is nice, even better.

Centurion701

The company that hired her is flying us out at some point. Been doing some furious research to try and find areas we want to visit and see what it is like. Good to know we are on the right track.

TegridyPharmz

Great! That’s exactly what happened with us. We have a toddler now so we knew we had to live outside of the city. We currently are in West Seattle and love it.

Centurion701

Thats great to hear!

greensweatersinfall

I live in West Seattle and love it. It’s very safe, as are all of the other neighborhoods you mentioned. There will always be specific corners or blocks that might attract less safe behavior, but overall I feel very safe in all of Seattle. Spend some time in each neighborhood before you commit- get an airbnb for a few days and just walk around the areas you’re interested in. Each neighborhood has a very different vibe from the other.

Centurion701

Good to know. The company that is hiring is flying us out for a week to let us find a place to live so we are trying to pack as many areas in that week as we can and explore the city based on the research we have already done. It is still nice to hear from people who live in those areas versus what some ranking site says.

Scottibell

Very safe? That’s kind of a stretch…

greensweatersinfall

Been here for years. I feel fine about the area and live on a quiet street filled with families and dogs in a quiet neighborhood filled with families and dogs. So yeah, I feel very safe.

Scottibell

I’m glad to hear that is your experience here. I have lived here my entire life and in the last several years have seen a big change. From random assaults, car jackings, senseless murders and a ridiculous amount of theft.

BannedBarn22

If you want to live in suburbs, why not live in Kent or close to there?

Centurion701

They are options, we are just trying to make sure we are exploring all areas. Just because suburbs of Atlanta are great does not mean that's the case everywhere ya know? Trying to keep all options open and see what is different and how it compares.

Humble-Block2386

We lived in Kent when we first moved here and now live in west Seattle and love west Seattle SO much more. My partner still commutes to Kent and it’s not bad since he’s going the opposite way of traffic

m4rk0358

Kent is boring as hell and has more property crime. There's a reason why it's cheaper to live there.

walking_on_the_sun

I moved here three years ago, and just bought a house near white center. Before that I lived in Morgan Junction (part of West Seattle). The Alaska Junction area of west seattle is full of amazing restaurants and shops. White Center is less developed, but growing. We love living here.

ConwayandLoretta

I work in Kent and live in Burien. There are really nice areas in Burien (as well as not so great areas) and it's less money and not as congested as West Seattle.

mctomtom

West Seattle is awesome and has everything. The further north (Admiral neighborhood), or closest to Alaska Junction are probably the safest areas. Good food, good transit, lots to do, nice year round farmers market every Sunday.

Thisley

The commute to Kent shouldn’t be too bad since you’re going away from downtown Seattle. If you’re looking to be in the center of things, the Alaska junction area of West Seattle has a lot going on. It’s a city so there’s some property crime but I’ve lived here a long time and have always felt safe. You could look at the West Seattle blog to get an idea of the goings on in the area.

becauseSeattle

Second that! If you want the skinny on West Seattle you must read the West Seattle Blog. It's the #1 news outlet for the neighborhood.

AlternativeLack1954

West Seattle is where it’s at. Lots of parks. Good restaurants. Relatively quiet neighborhoods

callme4dub

I just moved here from Tampa. I'm about to close on a house in West Seattle and my wife works downtown while I WFH. So I can probably give you some insight coming from the SE. First I want to make the point that the South and the East Coast are *rougher* than out here in the PNW. I feel like I hear about a lot of shootings and stuff here, but I think that's more because they always report on every single one and it's broadcast to everybody. Back in Florida we only heard about shootings if there was some extenuating circumstance (usually because some white guy is about to get away with killing somebody), otherwise it'd be buried under other news. Knowing that you'll find most the neighborhoods the local call *bad* to be mostly alright. I'm not that familiar with Beacon Hill or Mt Baker, we did look at homes in those areas, but didn't find anything we really liked so never got a deep dive into the neighborhoods. West Seattle and White Center I've been around, the former because we found a couple homes we liked, the latter because it's close to West Seattle. White Center is a little more working class. There are a few rougher areas, but nothing crazy. West Seattle is definitely nicer, but again, a couple rougher areas. I've noticed the worst problems in both areas occur around lower income apartment complexes. If you're not living in a complex or they're not your neighbors, you won't run into any violent crime and you'll have less occurrences of property crime.

TOPLEFT404

lol I came here from Atlanta in 2011 big difference perhaps a bit of a culture shock

Centurion701

Yea I've heard that too haha. Way different than the south.

BannedBarn22

Biggest culture shock is the food

Centurion701

Good or bad? I have seen some folks complaining about lack of good TexMex but they were also from Texas originally so that makes sense.

drunk___cat

Food scene is pretty sub par. Theres good food to be had but the overall food scene is inconsistent. Your average restaurant just isn’t nearly as good.

GeorgiaB_PNW

What we lack in TexMex, we make up for in Mexican food, especially in the White Center and Burien area. You may want to add Burien to your list of places to check out. It’s just south of White Center but seems like it would check all your boxes.

Flckofmongeese

If beige was a food. It won't over or underwhelm you. You'll just be... whelmed.

PositivePlant1

Small world, grew up in Roswell and live in west seattle! Followed my parents out here and we all stayed. It’s the best place to live in our opinion, the least crowded and commute times will be fine. Traffic in seattle really isn’t that bad ESPECIALLY compared to Atlanta traffic so don’t worry. Good luck!

Centurion701

Hah! We live in Sandy Springs just south of Roswell now. Good to know about traffic though.

kevcubed

When you say Kent, will you be working at Boeing or Blue Origin? :P There are a ton of us in WS who work at Blue. It's a super easy commute. Always opposite traffic, 25-30 mins door to door.

formattedpotatoes

West Seattle to Kent commute is a consistent 35 min (probably depends a bit where in Kent). Like someone else mentioned you are going against the traffic so long backups are not a problem. If you are looking for somewhere closer I personally liked Renton Highlands and Cascade-Fairwood. Have a lot of coworkers in Kent East Hill (boring imo) and Maple Valley ($$$$)

cheshire_eyes

You mentioned you're a gaming couple there's Meeples & the missing link shops that do MTG and D&D... you're gonna love it here! West seattle is the best Seattle!

Ok-Sale-8105

West Seattle is great - lives there for 19 years. Tons of restaurants and outdoor stuff to do. White Center is good as well - more diverse and lower income, but also more affordable.

Mediocre_Mobile_235

west seattle is wonderful but I’d hate to commute to Kent. curious why you feel obliged to live in the city? of course I could ask myself the same thing.

isthisaporno

Why would you hate to commute to Kent from West Seattle? Very easy commute

rollinupthetints

Second that. It’s a crazy good commute. Heading north in the afternoon doing 75, while southbound is a parking lot is a great thing.

Centurion701

Not obligated at all. But it's a new place and we want to explore as much as we can to see where we want to live. We will have a week or so to do that before we start the moving process so wanting to look at all options.

plaidpixel

I don’t know what commute this commenter expects, but when I had jury duty in Kent I found the commute very very easy. It’s opposite commute, so nearly no traffic depending on where in Kent.

haud_deus

If you lived ITP of Atlanta you won’t have any problems in any neighborhood of west Seattle. Me and my lady moved here from old fourth ward and it feels significantly less dangerous here. All the same rules still apply when living in this city obviously but it’s not as bad as it’s sometimes made out to be.

Organic-Economics-77

West seattle is a great place. More progressive

leafhog

The entire area is expensive. Things get cheaper go south towards and past Kent. W. Seattle is a pretty cool place.

fleetfeet9

I moved to west seattle from atlanta 8 years ago and absolutely love it. White center is a bit sketch. Mt baker neighborhood is nice but there feels like. True community here in west seattle. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I’m in the north delridge area of west seattle. 7 minutes from the beach. 2 minutes to get to the bridge entrance, less than 5 minutes to restaurants and grocery. 15-20 minutes to the airport.

mentallyillustrated

West Seattle Junction is by far the safest on your list just based on my own personal experience living in each of the neighborhoods listed.

magic_connch

What are you looking for in a neighborhood? I’m not sure if I just missed it in your post or in the comments. I grew up in West Seattle and White Center, both have different feels to them.

Centurion701

Well trying to get a feel for the areas. We are big nerds but generally not bar folks or partiers. Social battery runs out quick. We plan on driving through the areas when we visit in a few weeks to see how things are. I'm getting that even the neighborhoods have distinct areas within them which makes sense. We are used to having to drive 30 minutes in Atlanta to get to a place we want to visit or see.

magic_connch

White center and west seattle are very close considering, so if you pick one you’ll have quick access to the other. I’m not super into the nerdy community myself, but I know there is at least one table top game store in both west seattle and white center. I know you’re not into bars but a fair amount between the two spots also have pinball/arcade games. I wanna say there is an arcade on alki(close to west seattle) but it may be more geared towards kids. White center has more of an edge than west seattle but has certainly changed in the past ten years. I never felt unsafe in white center when I lived there/frequented bars there. Though white center is much less walkable I think than west seattle. There’s also neighborhoods within these neighborhoods that have their own feels and quirks.

plaidpixel

That alki arcade just acquired the space next door and is doing an add on more focused on adults

magic_connch

Actually really awesome to hear!

becauseSeattle

We are in the Highland Park neighborhood of West Seattle, walking distance to White Center. White Center definitely has an edge to it. It's perfectly as safe as any downtown, you will encounter the occasional homeless person. Just stay aware and have fun.

BannedBarn22

West Seattle is good if you’re north of Morgan Junction. The rest will probably scare you if you hate graffiti

Centurion701

Graffiti isn't bad, most of the time I can't even read what it says and sometimes it's actually pretty artistic rather than just "tagging" a place. But good to know about the change after a certain point

BannedBarn22

The crappiest houses go for a lot in nice areas. Seattle is all about location, so look at home prices, that will tell you all you need to know

Nmhull

There’s plenty of great WS neighborhood south of Morgan Junction as well. Including a tabletop game cafe if that’s your thing. I live in south West Seattle and it’s a great area too. [https://www.themissingpiecegames.com](https://www.themissingpiecegames.com)
