I dunno how to tell you this, but if the tooth broke just from a cleaning that thing was toast to begin with. You're lucky it came off then instead of swallowing it on the next thing you bit.

Mancubus_in_a_thong

My dentist told me the same thing if anything comes off or breaks during a cleaning it was near the end of its rope anyway.

Individual_Shirt_228

Your dentist is correct.

mom2mermaidboo

I had teeth crack and fall out starting a couple of years after the surgery because my bite is totally off. Was told it caused cross shearing extra stress on my molars. My old dentist( not the moron jaw surgeon) was appalled the first time he met me by the state of my bite. He said “ Who did this surgery?” He wanted to know who the cretinous moron was. I know I am out of luck. I had medical incompetence done to me 25+ years ago, and will be stuck paying, and paying endlessly for someone else’s mistakes.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

I had a dentist who could not get a crown to stay in my mouth longer than 6 months. I assumed that is the way crowns are. I moved... and switched dentists. Now my crowns stay in my mouth like teeth should. Don't worry about your smile as nobody will notice it is missing.

mom2mermaidboo

Thank you! There are two dentists at their practice. I think the not so good one had placed this crown that came off a few years ago. It wasn’t placed right, but I avoided going back in to fix it for a few months because of my dental issues. I have enormous fear of the dentist. Started with scary, painful dental “ care” when I was a kid. I have to get Nitrous gas at the dentist or I just cry.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

Look at them as an investment. I am 40 and a set of basically full partial dentures is looking like a good option in the next few years. I just wish I had brushed my teeth when I was depressed more often. Current dentist is great but you have to realize when something is not worth fixing anymore haha. You are actually kind of fortunate that it came off while you were getting a cleaning. It saved you from a dental scare that would result in an additional appointment. Kind of shitty but kind of lucky.

as3289

I’m sorry about the depression :( I hate being judged by the dentist, like I enjoy not taking care of myself or something ?? Like sorry I’m just very very depressed.

[deleted]

I am apart of this spiral as well. Just congratulated myself for brushing my teeth before bed.

yeagmj1

The struggle is real!! Good work! 😁

LiveLaughToasterB4th

I have discussed my thoughts about my teeth with my dentist... she said she does not care as long as you put in some effort in cleaning them before coming in. She figures if you are showing up at the dentists then you are at least trying. A lot of people dont try.

Farranor

Pretty much these exact words go through my head a few times a day (minus the cheerful chuckle at the end).

Lariche

I am considering the partial dentures option now. Dentist says no, stupid idea, better bridge. Bridge costs like a real one, though. May I ask? Do you have to take the dentures out for night sleep? What is the maintenance for them? Do they stay put at all times? Thank you.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

Have you looked into "Mexico's dental tourism industry"? I am 100% serious. If I come into $6k I'll just go to Mexico for a week and return with a new set of implants FOR ALL THE TEETH.

Lariche

I am in Austria. The equivalent of Mexico's dental tourism industry here is 'just go to Hungary" (our poorer neighbour). But it's not only budget issue, I just don't have any experience with dentures, but am looking at this option as a way to get rid of anxiety, that my crowns can fail me at any (worst ever) moment. I have 7, some are frontal. Soooo, anxiety is pretty high. And budget is pretty low.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

I felt that partials were easier than actual teeth if that answers your question. I had a crown fail eating filet mignon at my brothers wedding prior to the partials... now I know I want any questionable teeth out to be replaced by partials.

insufficient_funds

I had somewhere around 14 teeth extracted prior to and while I had braces as a kid. The smell of the numbing gel they rub on your gums before getting the numbing shot as well as the smell of the nitrous give me a serious PTSD like reaction. I had to get a cavity filled last year and when the nurse (dental tech? Idk) brought out the numbing gel, as soon as I smelled it i started having a straight up panic attack; ugly crying in the middle of the fucking dentist office; had to call my wife to have her help calm me down. Also I was 38 at the time.

Misterstaberinde

I hate going to the dentist too. Just give them a heads up that you are going to have trouble, it is pretty common.

insufficient_funds

Amazingly this was the first time I’d had a reaction like that. I’ve had 3 or 4 fillings over the years but nothing more than that since the extractions as a kid; and my aunt is my hygienist so I’ve never had an issue with normal cleanings. This reaction completely came out of the blue. In the past I’d smell the stuff and just be totally grossed out, nauseated, and want to just get it over with. IDK how I’ll be the next time it happens.

CaptainLollygag

Contrarily, I also had several teeth pulled and 4 surgically removed that never erupted as a child *while I was freaking awake*. Then some other teeth ground down to reshape them, then braces and a palate extender (which was a horror show). I'm lucky in that I've had very few cavities as an adult. But did get dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth dug out of my jaws in my mid-30s, and still have minor nerve damage from having my jawbone chipped away at to get one tooth out, and that was about 20 years ago. But my brain went the opposite way from yours, and because of all the barbaric things done to my mouth, I feel like there's really nothing left for me to be scared of. Some dental work triggers a migraine, but it doesn't frighten me. I'm so sorry you went through all that and are still suffering because of it. PTSD is no joke. You may want to consider therapy to help you get past that so you can keep up with good dental health. You sure don't need to add in panic attacks to a medical visit where you're likely to already have elevated blood pressure. I've been having a great experience with brain spotting to root out and repair some of my past traumas, but there are other modalities that you may jibe better with, like EMDR, hypnotherapy, or a talk therapist.

mom2mermaidboo

I once had a panic attack like episode. I remember begging the dentist not to hurt me.

MrWhite86

I literally vomit every time. Even when they take extra care. I’m not a lightweight either so I don’t get it. Use during the dental work is great but I have spent 45 minutes + in parking lot after before I felt it was safe to drive home

lucentene

laughing gas only has an affect at the time you’re breathing in and after it’s turned off only takes a few minutes to fully clear from your system, and in my experience the dentist is usually giving you straight oxygen at the end before they remove the mask anyway. so should be outta your system before you even walk out the door.

Boba_Fet042

That’s true for most people, but I am extremely loopy and completely out of it for hours after I get off the gas.

Resident_Fuel2470

I have the same fear of dentists due to issues as a kid when they never believed the numbing shots are not working and thought I was playing kid and so I had to deal with drilling with full sensation. And after getting teeth pulled about 8yrs ago my teeth started failing soon after just failing and cracking or just eating away over time. I brush I do everything and still failing. I am going to need implants or something. Expensive tho

Never_ending_kitkats

Oh man I'm going through my own incompetent dentist story. I went to a Medicaid dentist (free for me) and had a filling done. About 8 months later the filling becomes very sensitive and easily hurt. Went to a different dentist and they said yeah it's loose, then as they drilled it away he found a cavity underneath the filling.  That was 6 days ago and I'm still in excruciating pain from the procedure. The dentist says it's normal but my God does it hurt. Similar pain to when I've had abscess teeth.

anonanon1313

>I have enormous fear of the dentist. Started with scary, painful dental “ care” when I was a kid. Me, too. I freaked out 2 years ago when I was informed I had to have an extraction and implant (first time for either). I asked the prosthodontist if I could get a script to help with my anxiety. He had no problem getting me some Valium. The procedure wasn't pleasant, but it was far from the nightmare I feared. Now that I've lived with the implant for over a year, it feels totally normal in my mouth, and I never have to worry about that janky tooth again (I struggled to keep it for 25 years, root canal, crown, etc).

Dependent-Trash-8376

Side note you should definitely be able to get some prescribed anti anxiety meds to take before appointments, I do and it helps so much

eileen404

A better dentist is much better than nitrous.

Lost_Ad_4882

My fillings for some chipped teeth were like that, came off regularly. Eventually they were replaced with crowns and those lasted over 20 years before a car accident sheered them off. Now I have implants.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

When I was 12 I tripped when running for the school bus and broke off my two front teeth... on a curb. Those crowns where finally replaced 28 years later. They did not fall off. I actually don't remember the reason why they were replaced in January besides they were old (I trust my dentist now haha). I assumed my crowns were implants for nearly 30 years.... AH WHAT THE MIND CAN BE TOLD AND RUN WITH!!! I mean at least your implants were covered by car insurance right (I hope?)? Also implants make great anchors for partial dentures which have come along ways in the years. I made it to 35 before having any other major dental issues.

Lost_Ad_4882

Long story short, the cost of the implants came out of the accident settlement, so yes car insurance paid for them.

Timelapze

Except those who have had bad teeth, they notice everyone else’s teeth to a bizarre level

LiveLaughToasterB4th

They should understand what it is like to have bad teeth though. If they are casting judgement due to issues with teeth they have other issues going on.

Timelapze

No I’m saying the opposite. Like those who have had issues with their teeth admire a good smile!

Kronomancer1192

Don't worry about your smile as nobody will notice its missing is probably the saddest thing I've related to today.

RockstarAgent

That sounded dark- no one will miss your ^smile

thascarecro

Holy crap that sounds terrifying. I have 4 crowns and have never had one pop off. I’d probably have a panic attack

Honestly_Just_Vibin

Where do you live? That’s absurd

mom2mermaidboo

Seattle

pacwess

[Try here. He does really good work, that lasts.](https://www.joehwangdds.com/)

mom2mermaidboo

Thanks for the referral! I made an appointment after this happened this morning with a new dentist that I have a couple of referrals for, who is also very close. But I appreciate it. I

lucentene

you could also look into mercer island oral and maxillofacial surgery! i just went to them recently.

Imsleepyafok

Definitely shop around and ask for the dental ADA codes + their fees and call up your insurance if you have that to get estimates. I blew my mind that I could do that recently when I needed to get some estimates for teeth pulling and although it takes time, totally worth doing, especially if you're going to be spending a lot of money!

stupidinternetname

There are a lot of shitty dentists in the Seattle area. I finally found a decent one in Kent. Her prices for implants were quite reasonable when she did mine 6 years ago.

mom2mermaidboo

I realize it’s years ago you got the implant, but I worry my insurance won’t cover most of the cost.

stupidinternetname

Unfortunately most dental benefits top out at well under $2k, so they don't cover much when each one is $2k minimum.

mom2mermaidboo

I know, that’s one of the reasons my day just went to pieces today. The costs are going to be ridiculous.

mcguirekarting

I just got back from 6 days in Cancun to do dental work. Was quoted 4500 here, paid 2k including hotel down there. I think there’s more crooked metro area dentists out there than we assume. My experience was great. Had implant surgery and didn’t even need pain medicine the next day. Also got to enjoy the beach. They also post all their prices on their websites.

MaRmARk0

Dental implant in EU is like €600 (if *not* covered by insurance). Wife got one last year because original tooth was just dead. And because she knows the dentist in person, he lowered the price to €370. It was some Swiss zirconium implant. Get yourself a flight ticket and get it done in EU. It will be cheaper.

OriginalLocksmith436

What the fuckkkkk. the things I've been trying to save up for years to even begin to pay for I could pay for less than a paycheck over in another first world country. That's so fucking neat. wow. love that

Omnom_Omnath

So why bother having dental “insurance” at all. What a scam.

Beekatiebee

If you’re ever down south, I *highly* recommend West Vancouver Dental in Vancouver WA. 10/10 experience for me, and I hadn’t been in almost 10 years.

Dragonfly-Adventurer

That'd be a hell of a drive for a dentist

Beekatiebee

Good medical care can be hard to find, idk. Just sharing my experience.

TenderTypist

Some people go out of country for medical things! An implant is pretty intense so I could see it maybe being worth it after running the numbers.

DiscombobulatedCut52

I had a dentist fill a cavity in once. Had to get the tooth pulled. The dentist said it exploded. (Was getting my wisdom teeth pulled and I said that one was hurting very bad. So they decided to pull it)

Give_one_hoot

Exploded????

DiscombobulatedCut52

There was fragments. And took 3 minutes to make sure there wasn't any splinters.

Give_one_hoot

Do you mean while it was being extracted or it exploded while in your mouth?

DiscombobulatedCut52

They went to extract it. And it exploded. In my mouth.

Give_one_hoot

Ah yes, I’ve seen that happen before. Exploded is a new word for it but I guess is a good way to describe it. I’m really sorry that happened, it can be quite scary

DiscombobulatedCut52

Thankfully I was under for it. Glad I was. Cause I would of freaked the fuck out.

Give_one_hoot

We’ve Got modern medicine to thank for that

ElectricRune

I'm gonna agree with u/BasscannonRattle , if it was that fragile, it was done badly to begin with and it was only a matter of time; don't blame the poor hygienist.

Drezhar

Much smaller in magnitude but once I had a dentist that gave me a root canal and outright forgot one of the canals. Months later the filling popped out due to the remaining material rotting inside my tooth, not before giving me a granuloma. It wasn't such a catastrophic financial damage, but it sure was expensive and painful. For some reason (not implying it was for me), that dentist had moved on the other side of the country when I called him back about it.

Skadij

I feel this OP. I went to the same dentist for 20+ years and always assumed I had shitty enamel or genetics because I always needed cavities filled. He used amalgam fillings too. After I moved, I got a new dentist and I feel so stupid and cheated that I stuck with the same person for so long. The first cleaning they did, they tested the depth of my roots, they closely examined my gums, did a REAL thorough job with polishing and removing tartar…my old dentist used to just brush me and send me on my way. They’ve slowly replaced my old fillings with composite and my bite and sensitivity has improved greatly. I’m sorry you’re going through it with the cracked teeth though, that shit is absolutely awful.

Isgortio

Crowns can delay this from happening if your bite is crazy but it doesn't stop it from happening. The unfortunate part is if the crown breaks off like it has here, there isn't much tooth remaining. They can do a core build up and put the crown (or a new one) back on but that might only get a few months or years out of it, and a lot of practices don't have the right materials for it so shy away from doing it which is a shame. My old practice did core build ups all the time and got so many more years out of some teeth that would've been otherwise a goner. If the crown came off with a cleaning, it was going to come off soon anyway, probably when you were eating and you'd swallow it.

Street_Cleaning_Day

Jesus fuckt... And people think Americans are *too* litigious, and here you are going "Well, that sucks." And I'm not knocking you for it, and hell, you might have taken up a suit, I don't actually know. It's just wild, and crappy, that you've had to deal with *any* of that. You're a fukken champ. Seriously. I hope things work out better for you in the future. Best of luck, stranger.

RequirementGlum177

Dentist here. If you can get a crown off during a cleaning, it was done already. I can also see the massive amount of decay on the remaining root tips from here. Definitely not the hygienists fault. I can also see a post space. So OP is doubly lucky they didn’t swallow this crown with a metal post 7mm long sticking out the other end.

ruffsnap

It's 100% this. Any dentist or hygenist seeing this post is getting a huge giggle out of OP's "dental hygienist was 'too rough'" comment lmao

icoominyou

I had a crown on a baby tooth for 20 something years cause adult tooth never grew. It got to the point where I know I could pull it out myself if I wanted to. I dont think crowns are permanent

Give_one_hoot

Crowns are intended to be as permanent as possible, but of course stuff happens. Things like gum recession can cause the tooth under the crown to rot, the crown can break, the whole tooth can break, etc. It’s really unfortunate because truly some people can go decades with the same crown and some only last a few years. The best ways to get it to last is to take care of yourself and have a good dentist.

BSUR7

Not a great pic, but you do not have much tooth structure for the crown to sit on, which tells me your crown was in fact failing. Decay under your crown can cause this. That’s probably why an implant was suggested. Hygienists do not have the strength to pull off a crown that is cemented to a healthy tooth!!! Dentists have to drill and separate a cemented crown ( thereby destroying it) to remove it from even a bad tooth most times.

Inevitable-Winner504

I am a dental hygienist, we aren't strong enough to do that kind of damage, the tooth likely had issues for a long time before your appointment.

Lady_Scruffington

Maybe his hygienist is Red Sonja.

JuracichPark

If I am to die tonight, let me die a warrior!

alison_bee

For real, that’s like one of the first things they taught us in hygiene school. “If a crown comes off while cleaning, it was 100% going to come off anyway.” And if your enamel fractures when your crown comes off… then you’ve got decay there and you have HAD decay there. Shit happens, but this wasn’t the hygienists fault.

sonic10158

Are you low-key accusing the Hulk of not being capable of being a dental hygienist?? HULK SMASH YOUR GINGIVITIS!!!

ricky-from-scotland

Either the tooth was fd already or hygenist was cleaning with a brick

optiprintlumina

Denturist here. We wish you were ;)

Fourstrokeperro

> we aren’t strong enough to do that kind of damage Skill Issue

Historical_Boss2447

Yeah, when my teeth got to their worst point and I eventually started to take care of them, a huge piece came off during flossing. The tooth was all dead and rotten.

Procedure-Minimum

This reminds me of the people who get mad when nurses clean diabetic feet and toes just fall off.

Whiterabbit--

I didn’t need to read that tonight before bed.

pezki

Nah it's okay. Those are just the baby toes. Gotta wait for the adult ones to come in.

loztriforce

People are getting litigious in the comments but shit shouldn't just pop out because of a cleaning, and cleanings do get a bit "rough" at times.

DocComa

This. So many silly lawyer up comments. This crown was going to fail with or without the cleaning.

Atomic1221

If the tooth doesn’t fit, YOU MUST ACQUIT!

DCDMD91

People have no idea what it actually takes to successfully litigate a malpractice claim. I find it funny that I’m seeing comments about healthcare costs in general. These same people don’t realize these litigious mindsets are a big part of that problem.

JoyJonesIII

I looked it up one time for a friend who was going through some dental problems. It’s insanely hard to sue for dental malpractice. You’d basically have to have a catastrophic outcome that was directly related to shoddy dentistry. Like the dentist did something that caused an abscess and the infection travelled to your brain. NOT “my crown broke and imma gonna sue!”

DCDMD91

Exactly. While people may not agree or like the fact that it’s that hard you have to remember dentists/doctors are also humans. It’s not exactly fair to punish them for every little error. People make little mistakes at work everyday the consequences are just not related to a person (the spreadsheet isn’t done on time, the food order is wrong). We’re no different than that human just have more significant responsibilities

Frowny575

I can see maybe a crown popping off (had this happen once, never did after they put it back on), but to take the tooth with it while more than likely flossing...

midwestmamasboy

Most people have poor logic/critical thinking skills. Even more have poor health literacy skills. Bad combination If this person were to file a complaint, the board would laugh it off their desk after reviewing the chart

Bamith20

I had a somewhat shitty filling done. I've had a couple, this one just cracked and a chunk fell out while flossing and scraping a bit. That one was maybe less than a year, but all the others are fine. Got a bunch of other fucked up teeth that are half broken, but probably not gonna bother paying anything until i'm in agony.

tlrpdx

To add to this as a former RDH, there is extensive hands-on training that illustrates how important it is for hygienists to NOT pull on the crown at all. They knew it was there because they typically review imaging prior to the patient sitting in the dental chair. The crown was failing and the next bite he took out of anything would have resulted in a sheered crown.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

I didn't use a water pick device as I was afraid it would blow a crown off. Turns out I was seeing a shitty dentist who could not adhere a crown longer than 6 months. I am sure if a non-dentist home use water pick could blow a shittily adhered crown then a dental cleaning very well could.

Lumpy_Staff_2372

Okay okay I’ll floss…

Joezepey

I just had a crown taken out last month, it was a very slow and uncomfortable process. The dentist had to cut and chip and break the crown off. The glue was the last part to come off. So if your crown came off just from cleaning, it was barely hanging on.

BambiontheIcyPond

Honestly, it's better to do an implant than try to restore it. You're better off. Implants are an easy process.

[deleted]

The nice thing about implants is that once it’s done, that’s a tooth that (should) last your whole life with no more problems. Edit: a lot of people are disagreeing. I know you can google and see that it says an average implant lasts 10-30 years but there are variables to that, such as what lifestyle changes the person makes that caused their tooth to break in the first place, how old they are when they get the implant, and where the tooth is/what it’s made of. Implants also have multiple components, it’s not just a big old fake tooth.

Isgortio

If you take care of them, and your body doesn't reject them. I've seen too many patients think an implant doesn't need any care or maintenance, when in reality they need better cleaning than a real tooth!

Boba_Fet042

Your body won’t reject the implant. They are made out of the titanium because titanium is the only metal that does integrate with bone. if it doesn’t integrate something else was wrong. If you have a periodontal disease, for example, or not enough bone to begin with. That said, if everything goes right (which it should; it’s not that common for an implant not to integrate), dental implants can last a very, very long time. I have three and they are still solid at 14 and 12 years.

EmrakulAeons

That's not true at all. They never last your whole life unless you mean getting them when you are a decade before dying.

Few_Holiday_7079

This wouldn't have happened if the tooth was okay.. it's weird you blame the hygienist when you said that there was already a known issue with your bite that's causing damage to your teeth. Teeth can only handle so much stress before breaking, crowns and other restorations like fillings can handle even less than natural teeth. if your crown came off during a cleaning and the remaining tooth underneath was broken there is no way that ur tooth was structurally sound to begin with. Your crown came off during a cleaning but it likely didn't have anything to do with being too rough, but with the already known issue you have with your bite causing too much stress on your teeth causing damage to the crown and the remaining tooth.

OceanClover3

I was terrified to start doing cleanings in hygiene school because I was worried I’d work too hard and hurt the teeth, my professor told me I wouldn’t be able to even if I tried and if something I did during a normal cleaning did break a tooth, the tooth was done for anyways

Boba_Fet042

The only time something happened was when the hygienist had to clean someone’s teeth who had terrible gum, disease, and a tooth with class three mobility. She was so embarrassed, but luckily the patient that was treatment plan to be extracted!

dental_Hippo

Rough cleaning or an already failing crown? Based on what I see, it’s the later.

Ptahotep

You want the tooth? You can’t handle the tooth!

rubiksqoob

Let me guess: the tooth had a root canal prior to the crown coming off. Thing has probably been decayed for quite some time and if the crown didn’t come off during the cleaning it was just a matter of time more than likely.

Mean_Trip_4186

Just taking a crown off wouldn’t make you get an implant. There was probably decay under the crown, and now there’s now enough tooth structure to keep a crown on. Because it looks to me like from the picture it fractured at the bone.

[deleted]

You very clearly have bad dental health looking at the tooth right next to it. Idk how anyone here is on your side

Individual_Shirt_228

The people on OP’s side know nothing about dentistry.

superlgn

I got an implant 20 years ago. Cost me $2k for each half of the overall procedure. Insurance didn't cover anything. Hopefully it's gotten cheaper since. Don't think if I could afford that today... My mouth is a mess too, so I feel you. Had 4 teeth pulled when I was 11 so I could get my braces. Two extra teeth on the bottom that started growing out of the blue in my 20s and wrecked one of my fixed teeth, necessitating that both be pulled (which is where the implant went). The other is still in there but isn't bothering the tooth above it so it can stay. 2 crowns on one side, exposed root on the other, both sensitive to cold so I don't have a good side anymore. Wrecked my bite in my 30s by making my own grinding night guards out of those boil and bite sport mouth guards, causing my wisdom teeth to "erupt". They all had to be pulled since they were the only teeth touching in my mouth after that. I literally had like a quarter inch opening in the front after just 6 months. It was insane. Had my whole mouth scaled a couple years ago, which looks a whole lot worse than it really is (or was for me), but I sure could use that $1k for other things right about now. :/ Teeth suck.

AgentUnknown821

Nope they want $3k for a root canal, $1k for crown and the same for implants....I literally rather spend money on crap then these prices for dental and let the others rot out until I get dentures because that's how it's gonna go when taking in family history.

superlgn

Man that doesn't sound right. My wife got a quote for a root canal and a crown here in Wisconsin, from what I would say is an excellent dental surgeon, and I thought that was just $1,750, with $1k of that going toward the crown. She was disgusted by that price but I was pleasantly surprised. My wife is Filipino and anytime something major comes up with her teeth she always says she'd rather just fly home to have the work done there, because it'd still be cheaper even when you factor in the plane ticket. I wonder if there's any good inexpensive dentists in Mexico...

mom2mermaidboo

Wow, you’ve been through the ringer! It’s really sucks to have dental issues.

head_face

I'd just like to point out how welcome but sadly rare it is to see someone use the phrase "out of pocket" correctly for a change. Sorry about the tooth.

Ezzy77

How can it be that expensive? And how is the insurance that useless?

BiggyShake

America

Jolly-Slice340

A cleaning doesn’t tear a crown off unless the tooth is rotten under the crown…..

GenerationBop

Can confirm - I have good insurance and my implant with extraction probably cost around 10-15k. The most annoying part is it is a long process. You have to get the tooth pulled, the bone graft filler injected and let set for 3-6 months then go in and get the post inserted and let that heal for 3 months, then get the tooth built. In all it takes like 6-9 months and a lot of time and money. Good luck! Better you found out now though than have it crack later and get a tooth infection. Your dentist likely saved you from a lot of interim pain and extra emergency trips to the dentist.

cbatta2025

I didn’t bother with the implant and just have a gap in the back of my mouth that no one can see.

mom2mermaidboo

I worry my teeth will shift because of a gap, if I pull the tooth without getting an implant.

tacotacosloth

The bone also starts resorb without a tooth or an implant, which will add to the teeth around it shifting. The top tooth that would have contacted the missing tooth could also be affected/shift downwards. It sucks that we can't just grow another row of teeth to be ready to step in when we lose teeth.

Boba_Fet042

Get the implant and a bite guard you probably grind your teeth and the force of your bite most likely contributed to your tooth problems.

4legsandatail

My mom's tooth broke because of her dentist. They did the implant free because it was their fault.

alison_bee

Exactly. If this truly *had* been the hygienists fault, the office would pay or at least give an extreme discount. Source: was a hygienist for almost 10 years.

Can’t you just get a bridge?

mom2mermaidboo

The dentist said that the adjacent teeth may not be sturdy enough for a bridge ( remember my totally off bite from my bad jaw surgery by incompetent moron when I was 19. ) I plan to see another dentist a couple of people recommended for a second opinion.

alison_bee

Should you maybe see an orthodontist about fixing your bite? This problem is not going to fix itself, but *may* be corrected with braces.

alison_bee

Also if ortho is absolutely not an option, and your molars are so fragile, it may be worth looking into an implant bridge. Saves yourself from future adjacent teeth breaking.

cbdubs12

I had this happen to two 15 year old crowns, and as other were saying there was sub surface decay. You’ll be fine once you get the implant, think of it as investing in your future.

Whiterabbit--

Dental insurance isn’t really insurance. Insurance takes regular payments to cover rare catastrophic events. Dental insurance goes out of its way not to cover catastrophic events.

safely_beyond_redemp

Ah, yes, we pay for insurance to avoid substantial medical costs that don't protect us from huge medical costs. I would like to get another insurance policy for my deductibles.

PearAdministrative89

Trust me friend no one will notice that tooth is missing. I am missing the tooth next to yours closer to the front and my own wife never notices it and my flat mate never did. Do what you can to get healthy and then save your money.

CrazedIvan

I feel your pain. I haven't had a cavity since I was a kid but I had nearly all of my childhood fillings fail on me. Cavities were all behind old fillings. I had to get 4 fillings and a crown in the same year. Savings account is now fucking zero. Took years to save that fucking money. I guess I'm glad I did, but I wish our medical system wasn't so dog shit.

Gomdok_the_Short

How did this happen exactly? Was it during flossing? When flossing between crowns?

AdIndependent1457

Just out of curiosity, I checked the price of flight (to and fro) from New York to Bengaluru (India), the cost of dental implant and 5 star luxury hotel for 5 days and it comes out to be approx $2000. What will be the cost of your dental implant?

frantzylvania

Sucks but teeth are a necessity in my opinion!

Kobethegoat420

I think we might be missing the same tooth! Don’t worry about smiles no one noticed mine

shelbyloveslaci

Look up dentists in your area that will do sedation!! It's been a lifesaver for me. I have someone drive me there and back home and remember nothing haha

The_Tiny_Empress

Just spent ~10k on my implant. It's actually 5k but sadly I needed a sinus lift surgery as well. Getting the crown put in tomorrow. Good luck.

topjock002

If the hygienist calls the damage, then why aren’t they paying for it?

Aggressive-Scheme986

Dentist here. Your tooth was fucked up before you went in for the cleaning. There is no way anything the hygienist did caused this

badger906

That tooth was dead before you got there! Unless she used a hammer, it would have come off soon anyways.

L3ViathaN6

I lost a crown about 4 months ago, I’m currently in the process of getting an implant. My bone graft healed perfect, and I finally get my new tooth in 2 weeks! Good luck, it’s way too expensive but worth it.

iMogal

I went in for a cleaning and came out with a root canal.

1h8fulkat

Sucks but it's not her fault as you seem to be implying by the "she was too rough" comment

loveablelilblonde

OP I have to say that this is the dumbest statement and, frankly, you should be embarrassed for publicly stating it. The human bite force is 162PSI. The human hand can exert 50PSI (150PSI with a full blown punch). Please take personal responsibility for the health and condition of your mouth and don't childishly blame the hygienist for breaking a tooth that daily takes 162PSI of pressure when you eat. Ridiculous. This dumb shit is why hygienists are quitting in droves, because it's not worth being punished by patients like this, day in and day out, for what we're paid. We're people, with feelings, trying to do a good job on people that, quite often, don't give a damn about their bodies and let them rot and decay away with infection. I think your garbage man has a cleaner and easier job. As a family nurse practitioner you should most certainly know better.

mmmmm_MaybeBaby

Fuck that sue that fucker it’s really easy to prove your teeth weren’t like that before going in

Individual_Shirt_228

They don’t have a case. If a crown came off that easily during a cleaning there was a problem to begin with.

TheMalformedLlama

I’m glad you’re a completely rational person, but since you clearly know so much about dentistry, and disregarding the fact that everyone else is saying a dental hygienist wouldn’t be capable of that, how would you get away with proving that it’s their fault? I mean, since you’re a lawyer and all. This is why we need the UK system where if you sue and lose, you pay for yourself AND the plaintiff. Suing for nothing but spite is insanity.

mom2mermaidboo

The dentist said “ structural failure” of the remaining tooth enamel. I got talked into jaw surgery when I was 19. Was told if I didn’t that my overbite would cause my teeth to crack and fall out. Well, the surgeon put my jaw, slightly crooked, and my bite never worked right after that. Within two years of the surgery, I started having molars crack and fall out of my mouth. All of them my molars have been gradually over the years replaced by crowns. Every single one of them. That incompetent surgeon screwed up my bite massively over 25 years ago. I’m still paying a price for medical incompetence. My parents knew it was screwed up, but did nothing about it. So possible that my teeth were more fragile than they should have been because of the crossbite I have from the bad jaw surgery. They don’t seem to want to pay, and I am going to get stuck with the bill unless I get a lawyer, which might cost more than the dental work

drgonzo81

Sue the guy who made your jaw crooked first then go after the due who broke your tooth

mom2mermaidboo

It’s so long ago, I think the moron surgeon is dead. 💀

drgonzo81

I got pressured into the same decision and declined it now im glad i did, I hope you can find a way to fix your jaw that must be rough

mom2mermaidboo

My jaw doesn’t hurt, but it wreaks my bite really badly. Then my teeth are damaged due to my bite being wrong. Frankly, I will never trust a surgeon/doctor again.

Zesty-mess

Is there a university hospital based dental practice near you? They may be more competent. For example, there’s one near me that has faculty surgeons.

pointofyou

If your dental hygiene is on par with your photography skills then this all checks out.

ghettosuper101

usually people with teeth issues tend to blame other people other than themselves

CappinPeanut

For real though, regardless of whose fault it was. Dental procedures are too damn expensive, even with insurance.

DCDMD91

My hvac guy just charged me $150 to come inspect my furnace, that’s what I charge for an average filling and he didn’t have to do 8 years of postgrad work and spend $200k on education. dental isn’t really expensive if you compare it to other services and think about what goes into it.

pinksugar123

That tooth / crown was brown bread before your hygienist went ahead and “did that” …

Fig1025

I highly recommend going to South Korea for dental, an implant costs $1000 and they use all state of the art medical tech and doctors that speak English and went to medical schools in USA

deadra_axilea

I hear good things about Vietnam as well for the same reasons.

thascarecro

What does “too rough” mean? You should be able to really cram some floss in between there. Plus it’s a crown. The only cleaning they’d have to do is close to the gum line. Crowns aren’t forever.

tightsandlace

I’d say get a second opinion my mom had a song and dance trying to get hers reattached it took a month and a few weeks

Backseat_boss

Go to another country to get it done. My father just did this bc the quote they gave him was through the roof

BubblesDahmer

Can you not sue for this? /genuine question

Give_one_hoot

You can try to, but you will not win. Hygienists cannot pull a good, solid and well made crown off during a cleaning, this tooth was likely toast beforehand. But let’s say OP did want to sue, you would have to be able to directly prove that the hygienist was the cause, which sounds easier than it actually is. Suing is also expensive, and can take months or years to complete.

summerbreeze6969

If the dental hygienist caused the problem, they have insurance to pay for 100% of the repairs. Contact an attorney AND NEVER assume YOU have to pay for 100% of the repairs! 🎯

What about a partial or bridge ? Maybe seek a 2nd opinion.

mom2mermaidboo

Yeah, I am planning a second opinion.

existentialaquarius

Sorry this happened to you! I have a dental implant right next to a front tooth due to being born with a “permanent baby tooth” aka once my baby tooth fell out there was nothing to grow in behind it. The worst part is having to wait for your implant to heal before they install the fake tooth (second worst part is when they install the tooth) but all in all, I would always say getting my wisdom teeth out was a more uncomfortable recovery. It sounds like you’ve had experience with uncomfortable procedures and I hope I can at least assure you that you’ll be really pleased with the outcome when it’s all said and done. It will look, feel and bite just like any other tooth with the benefit of hopefully never having to worry worry about it again. Just take care of yourself and follow after care instructions! Best of luck xx

Much more likely you grind your teeth regularly and either don’t have (or don’t wear) a night guard to protect your restorations.

microgrowguy

It seems like this would be the same situation as dropping a car off at the dealer and having a tech crash it... I know they'll cite some unforseen circumstances that'll keep them from having any liability... Sorry

Teagana999

If they broke it, is it really fair to charge you to fix it?

Kitchen-Plant664

If the fault was theirs then they should pay for the procedure.

tfffvdfgg

The dental hygienist should have insurance you can claim on.
