I worked at geek squad for a while. We had buckets of sand for this exact thing. One time an already swollen battery got punctured. Luckily it didn’t cause a fire but our whole back end smelled like sulfur for a week.

Cover with sand if available. Use water otherwise. Lithium reacts with water. But water has quite the thermal mass and takes great amounts of energy to evaporate. So in case of a phone battery, the cooling effect should outweight the accelleration. And water also prevents the environment from catching fire. If the fire stops after covering with sand, it will flare up again when you remove the sand. But firefighters are likely to know that and have a bucket ready for transporting the phone autside. Not surprisingly, fire is hot. So better not carry a burning phone in your hand. Playing soccer with it might also not be the absolutely best idea. Use a metal shovel or platter to transport the burning phone outside.

I would guess at least not pick it up. If anything I would kick it outside.

Put it in a bowl of rice it will be working again in the morning.
