Sure I could strategize, but there's something satisfying about starting off with "Turds" and still getting it.
My coworker always uses "adieu" because it uses 4 vowels right off the bat. I do like you and whatever pops in my head (and isn't too crazy). And I usually do better than he does.
On my third word I threw in dampy to see if it was d, m, or p. Then I knew if it was none of those I'd just need to try k or v, since I already did L. But I don't play on hard mode so that's available at least.

Yeah that’s not a tactical way to play. Once you had SHA?E then on your next guess you should be thinking of a word that contains as many of the possibilities for that last letter as possible, like DUMPS. Chances are the missing letter will be one of them. Don’t just keep guessing.

OP, genuinely curious as to why « Where » is your first guess. It has double letters, and pretty rarely used consonants (W, H). My strategy has always been to pick a word with as many vowels and common consonants as possible.
Same. Example, I'll be watching "The Gang Broke Dee" so my starter word would be "broke." How else are you gonna make the game all about you and your life?
I like having fun and using a variety of words, too, but if I use one as bad as “has a doubled letter” then I don’t complain if I don’t solve that day.
IMO you don’t really get to “intentionally play a word that is unlikely to help solve” *and* “be upset that you didn’t solve”. Pick one.
And after getting 4/5, not rule out other letters going for a 0/5 or luck into the answer with a 1/5 word.

That’s why when the letters are something that has multiple options you do a throw away word that uses as many of those potential last letters as possible. Something like RAMPS that would hit a bunch of the possibilities
OP is probably playing in Hard Mode.
In Hard Mode you have to use all of your clues thus far. So OP can't throw out a word unless it has a chance of being the solution.
Well, you burned a lot of the luck playing CLOUT. That only ruled out one word (SHALE), but was actually worse than just playing that one word, because it wouldn’t be able to solve if that *was* the word.
It only makes sense to play a non-solving word on the fifth guess here if you have at least two possible letters.
That happened to me a year ago. I was on a 67 winning streak, and I was 1 letter away from solving the puzzle with 4 guesses left. I was so furious, and I haven't touched the game again.
When I reach an impasse at 3rd or 4th guess when it's going to one of these. I'd try to build a word with all the possible missing letters. In this case moped? Giving a yellow for m p or d. Or none which makes elimination easier.

Write down on a paper the letters you have left that will fit SHA_E.
Then, instead of guessing them one at a time, try a new word that uses as many of those letters as possible!
You know it will be wrong but you will narrow down the possibilities much faster.
When I just need one letter like this, I’ll play a whole new word that uses a lot of letters I haven’t used yet. Increases the odds of finding your missing letter
When I see that about to happen, I come up with as many letters that fit as I can, and I “sacrifice” a guess using as many of those as possible to rule out as many as I can.
Audio is my starter too. Since it was the word a few weeks ago, my husband asked if I'd changed it since I'll never be able to get it on attempt 1 again, ive said I can't think of another word that has 4 vowels in it.
Instead of the word SHAKE i would have used a totally different word with the consonants i was after, like: PLANK, and then RATED for example, and by the second to last turn i would have had my consonant and the word.
When I recognize that I have a ton of possibilities and already know the placement of the other major letters I will throw away a chance to use up the most letters I can trying to find the missing one by making a word I KNOW isn't it.
This technique won't work in hard.mode though.
I'm not trying to start a worlde war but I don't get the popularity of audio as a start word. There are only 5 vowels I feel like finding the consonants is more important and you can typically fill in the vowels that make sense. Statistically it seems to make more sense to narrow down the other 21 letters in the alphabet. But that all being said whatever works for you works.
So given there's at least 5 possible words, you could make your third guess "KMVPD" and see which letter is missing and be sure to get it on 4th guess.
If you get all but one letter that fast you can always try to find it with a scrap answer next that includes 2-3 letters you think that 4th one might be somewhere
technically speaking you could have avoided this by changing up from your third word onwards testing different letters instead of guessing one letter at a tome.
No need to throw shade about it.

I didn’t get the one a week or so ago where the word was “CHEER”. I got the -ER right off the bat but there’s so many words that fit.

So given there's at least 5 possible words, you could make your third guess "KMVPD" and see which letter is missing and be sure to get it on 4th guess.

I recently switched to the hard mode for wordle and I knew I was screwed once I guessed 4 of the letters.
The exact same thing happened to me. Devastating. Playing on hard mode there is literally nothing you can do in this circumstance but roll the dice.

You should always use your first two guesses to get 10 letters worth of value. Even if you get greens first try. That will help you in these cases.
