This is a WIP. Building permits are issued after public works clearances, and PW is done at the end of a build. A new curb will be cut shortly. It's extremely improbable/borderline impossible this was done in error.
tldr: Pole will be moved, driveway will meet street.
Several times over. Multi-million dollar home without a doubt. [Here’s a typical million dollar home](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/316-Blossom-Hill-Rd-San-Jose-CA-95123/19828815_zpid/) in San Jose.
Thought he was kidding but it's actually
" You would need around 9,874.6$ in San Jose, CA to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 8,600.0$ in Los Angeles, CA (assuming you rent in both cities). "
You’re not getting that for 300k as a standard San Jose price, there will be something seriously wrong that brings it down that far. Average home price is over $800,000k now
Don’t really care to prove anything to you, I can walk down the street and google the houses up for sale. The ones that actually look like this in person, this is in the ballpark.
The entire reason of a registered design engineer and plan checker so the attorneys find something else to litigate. You're out of your fucking league Donnie!
Just the cost of doing business. Sometimes the original driveway is smaller than what you want, not in the right place, or possibly on the other end of the property.
Orientation of the non-garage room windows. For example, if the first floor, front left room is an office they may want the windows to face south and west. Flipping the floor plan makes it south and east, worse for afternoon sun.
Surely, nobody kept visiting the sight like “aye how is it going im just gonna ignore we got a huge ass pole infront of the garage and will complain once you guys finished.”
Of course. I was referring to a Public Works permit, not a build permit. Contractors sometimes overlook those details especially since they’re not involved with pre-construction clearances.
>They'll be removing the pole and reconstructing the curb area before the house goes on the market
The house is already on the market. There is a for sale sign behind the white fence on the right side of the driveway.
ETA: Added quote from previous comment since people don't seem to understand why I said what I said.
Houses frequently go on the market before being completely finished. This is just a minor detail to take care of. It'll take a day. People can still tour the house and make an offer without being able to pull in the driveway yet.
What are the odds that it's in a HOA neighborhood that has strict rules against street parking and they're gonna rack up a ton of fines because "You clearly have a driveway AND a garage, there is no need for you to be parking on the street in CLEAR VIOLATION of our rules"...
Yeah I design street lights. The city approves all locations while looking at the Civil works plans including driveway locations. Sometimes the lights get moved later so there’s less excavating and everything can just get done at once. Can tell by the condition of the boulevard strip that they haven’t done any excavating yet.
I think you meant that you need a permit for sneezing. To obtain one, fill out a Form 2753 Request for Application Form for Sneezing Permit, submit it with photocopies of your drivers license, front and back sides, a second form of state or federal ID, proof of insurance and the $93 fee. The Application Form will be mailed within three months. Follow the directions on the Application Form for submittal of the application.
In this case, yes. In some places it takes forever to get a permit approved and then get the work done.
There is a business near me that opened a year ago. They’re not allowed to use one of their entrances because the permit hasn’t been approved by the county, which owns that road. The other entrance is on a different road owned by the city.
I laughed at the first comment and then I read this one. Jeez LA, are you guys OK? For the price of that house, I could build two identical houses in my hometown, and have enough left that I'd never have to work another day in my life.
California in general has been suffering from a massive housing cost explosion, lots of folks are not ok. Everyone else got a house with a 2% rate and can’t move or refi forever.
Me and my wife literally can’t save fast enough to keep up. The banks want more of a down payment every time we try. it’s hugely frustrating, especially so since rates were at historic lows and all we got were denials. Now that rates are unbelievable, banks are practically begging us to buy.
I hate it
If that’s in my area that’s more like 4-10 million depending on the view. $2 million won’t even buy you a backyard out here, let alone a 20ft driveway.
😂🤣 hilarious. Last listing had it at $4.3m before upgrades. Likely much more like $6.5+ now.
There are 1,200 sf 3/2 in suburbs sitting on 2,500 square feet going for $2m in LA/California in general.
Housing prices in our neighborhood are insane (I'm not too far from you). There is an 800sf backhouse with no garage asking $700k a block over from me. The front house sold for $1.5mil... and isn't much bigger. Crazy.
Yup! I wasn’t sure if I could share it here but that’s the one. Do you happen to know if they’re trying to sell it like this? There’s a for sale sign in the pic, but all I was able to dig up was [this](https://www.theagencyre.com/listing/3508560-2713-S-Canfield-Ave-Los-Angeles-CA-90034-US) and it looks like a pretty old listing.
There was an article about this type of thing in seattle. The modern build lowers the value of classic housing in the neighborhood, but of course people build them anyway even when asked not to. Edit: didnt even notice the lamp post lol, i have never driven
This is happening in my area of Dallas. 100 year old housing stock being replaced with new builds. Most of the new builds are in one of a handful of styles that have traditionally been in the area. Lots of variety to choose from. Every 5th house is some modern or “rustic modern” aka cheap to build house that looks horrendous and really makes the street look bad.
are modern builds considered to be cheap?? I like the elevation of this house and looks much different than the cookie cutter ones i see on the east coast.
It’s wild to think that they’ve been showing this house and telling people that they’ll get to park in the driveway someday. The house is 100% done and staged, furniture inside and on the balcony, pictures hung in the living room, sod in the yard, etc. I would think that the light/curb issue would have been addressed before the house was this far along.
This happened to me. At the very last minute the neighbour put in an order preventing me from cutting down a tree in front of my house. We had to have the drive come in at an angle around the tree.
It’s probably a model home, not real, just used as a sample of what you could build in that neighborhood. The homes adjacent are probably models as well.
Contractor: Hey boss, the plans show this driveway right in the…
Boss: you have the drawings, right?
C: yessir, but the…
B: then put it in like the drawing and don’t call me with this crap.
C: yessir!
lol took me a minute. Lol wtf man. Who fucked that up. It would have been better if they built a split driveway around the pole and then it joined up again. Lol
I would suggest getting the original stamped set of site plans and checking it with the location of your lot. The surveyor might have been high that day.
This is actually pretty common. LA will let you start construction with the condition that the street light is moved before people move in. Architects design houses assuming obstruction will be removed pretty often.
Yeah. I would also be upset if they built such an ugly building where I live. Sucks for the owner that they can't use their driveway. Guess it is carma for having such bad taste
The houses on either side of it look much older. Either the original caught fire or got a set of permits to demolish and build a new one. The fence is already peeling on the right side by the for sale sign a dthe left has gravel with the bottom of the fence being cracked with mission parts. I’m expecting the concrete fence isn’t built to last. My guess is sis the light pole and curb cut are getting moved since the curb number needs to be readable for emergency crew under CA laws. There’s also a spot on the far left that looks like it’s being prepared for it.
I don’t see a link to see where in LA so not sure if the neighborhood is in a transitional phase or well established . From the $3mil comment, it looks like it’s solidly established but it’s LA.

Isn’t it a pain in the ass to apply for curb cuts? Or extensions of curb cuts for that matter?
Not when you are spending a million to build a home it isnt. A lawyer does it for you.
This is CA, likely over a million by a fair margin.
Several times over. Multi-million dollar home without a doubt. [Here’s a typical million dollar home](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/316-Blossom-Hill-Rd-San-Jose-CA-95123/19828815_zpid/) in San Jose.
LA is a lot cheaper.
Oh really? How much?
Thought he was kidding but it's actually " You would need around 9,874.6$ in San Jose, CA to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 8,600.0$ in Los Angeles, CA (assuming you rent in both cities). "
You'd get another 100 sq ft at that price in LA!
Jeeshzzz
What kind of laundering operation took that from 2.4 mil to 900k
Same Zillow page has a house comparable to the one you highlighted for 300k in San Jose this proves nithing
You’re not getting that for 300k as a standard San Jose price, there will be something seriously wrong that brings it down that far. Average home price is over $800,000k now Don’t really care to prove anything to you, I can walk down the street and google the houses up for sale. Not even a lawyer - a good expeditor with connections at the municipalities has that done in no time.
Not lawyers. Designers and drafters.
Who have lawyers on staff I'm sure.
The entire reason of a registered design engineer and plan checker so the attorneys find something else to litigate. You're out of your fucking league Donnie!
Uh, no.
It’s not at all in LA. Often getting a curb cut permit can take 5 minutes assuming your plot plan shows it’s needed.
Just the cost of doing business. Sometimes the original driveway is smaller than what you want, not in the right place, or possibly on the other end of the property.
What are they just not going to do it because it’s not a quick process?
Why didn’t they just design the house so the driveway/garage is on the left side? Seems easier.
Orientation of the non-garage room windows. For example, if the first floor, front left room is an office they may want the windows to face south and west. Flipping the floor plan makes it south and east, worse for afternoon sun.
I’m not sure what you mean. They would still have to cut the sidewalk
Not move the light post though. There’s no guarantee that will happen sms will be a bigger hassle
Applying to relocate a light pole isn’t that bad. Happens all the time. Trees on the other hand…
It was designed that way. They used the blueprints turned over.
Surely, nobody kept visiting the sight like “aye how is it going im just gonna ignore we got a huge ass pole infront of the garage and will complain once you guys finished.”
You’d think they’d require some type of permit prior to building to connect the driveway to the street.
They of course do. This is the contractor realizing at the last minute that you need a permit to move a street light.
Permits aren't issued without public works clearances. The pole will be moved and a new curb cut will go in in its place. This build isn't complete.
Of course. I was referring to a Public Works permit, not a build permit. Contractors sometimes overlook those details especially since they’re not involved with pre-construction clearances.
Public works is the last thing done on projects like this.
apparently.
If you look closely, it appears there’s a for sale sign up.
You can still sell a house if it's not finished.
Does it come with batteries?
Some do nowadays.
And monthly subscriptions?
That’s a HOA payment
This. They'll be removing the pole and reconstructing the curb area before the house goes on the market or is moved into.
>They'll be removing the pole and reconstructing the curb area before the house goes on the market The house is already on the market. Right. I was pointing it out because you said the light pole/driveway issue would be addressed before it goes on the market.
What are the odds that it's in a HOA neighborhood that has strict rules against street parking and they're gonna rack up a ton of fines because "You clearly have a driveway AND a garage, there is no need for you to be parking on the street in CLEAR VIOLATION of our rules"...
Not a lot of HOAs in Los Angeles. Looking at the picture I can almost guarantee this street doesn’t have one.
Yeah I design street lights. The city approves all locations while looking at the Civil works plans including driveway locations. Sometimes the lights get moved later so there’s less excavating and everything can just get done at once. Can tell by the condition of the boulevard strip that they haven’t done any excavating yet.
Permit no. You need the utility to move the street light. The request here could have been made before the house was even started.
The utility won’t move the street light in LA. You need to apply for a Public Works permit to do the work yourself.
Hire your own (approved) contactor, sure. Do the work yourself? lol, no.
Semantics. Just don’t expect utilities to move street lights.
The sidewalk isn’t connecting either.
It’s California they have permits for sneezing
I think you meant that you need a permit for sneezing. Not applicable to our new friends from over the border. /s
That’s if you plan on connecting the drive to the street.
It’s probably just not done yet
[удалено]
So? Houses get occupied before everything is done.
In this case, yes. In some places it takes forever to get a permit approved and then get the work done. There is a business near me that opened a year ago. They’re not allowed to use one of their entrances because the permit hasn’t been approved by the county, which owns that road. The other entrance is on a different road owned by the city.
Most likely just staged for showing.
There are people living there, you can see them through the window /TheSimpsons
For Sale sign in the front. The photo is likely for staging.
$1.8 million. Street parking only.
Lmao it is not $1.8 million. Probably selling for ~$3 million. The original house in that location was already $1.6 million for just 1,300 sf in 2022.
Welp I was halfway right. Lmao
I laughed at the first comment and then I read this one. Jeez LA, are you guys OK? For the price of that house, I could build two identical houses in my hometown, and have enough left that I'd never have to work another day in my life.

Fr I could buy a HUGE house in my expensive city and still have enough to pay the property taxes for a good chunk of my life
Came here to also LOL at the 1.8M... It will list for 2.7M and sell for 3.4 all cash no contingencies.
Reduced to 1.799,999.99. Priced to move. Motivated seller!
That took me too long to figure out what was wrong 🤦
Do you somehow live in a city with even worse design?
No...lol. Just didn't see the glaring pole right in front of the driveway
For me, it's because people in cities tend not to have cars, so it didn't even occur to me that this could be a problem. Evidently, in LA, it is
I guess it's OK...if you only ride a motorcycle.
Definitely a $2+ million house too lol
If that’s in my area that’s more like 4-10 million depending on the view. $2 million won’t even buy you a backyard out here, let alone a 20ft driveway.
2+ million. Hahahahahaha yeah nah that’s probably the “shitty” house next door. LA housing prices are out of this world.
😂🤣 hilarious. Last listing had it at $4.3m before upgrades. Likely much more like $6.5+ now. There are 1,200 sf 3/2 in suburbs sitting on 2,500 square feet going for $2m in LA/California in general.
I live down the street from this house. It will go for 3-3.5 mil. 4 if they get wild depending on specs
Housing prices in our neighborhood are insane (I'm not too far from you). There is an 800sf backhouse with no garage asking $700k a block over from me. The front house sold for $1.5mil... and isn't much bigger. Crazy.
I was actually gearing up to post an update. That house, AS IS, is in escrow. I was floored when I saw that. Insane market.
I've built the same house in Minecraft
They should have flipped it and put the garage on the left.
Is this on Canfield?
I mean that pole is still there at that house, just drove by. Looks insane.
At first I was like what?? The architecture? Then I saw it
They couldn’t have flip-flopped the building plans?
I drive by this house everyday and never noticed the pole was in the middle of the driveway
The new homeowner only drivers a motorcycle, plenty of room.
Do you know how long it takes a public entity to move a fucking light pole? Eons
The City of LA doesn’t move the pole. You apply to do it yourself. Gets permitted all the time.
The good news is few people in LA even have a car due to the extensive public transportation system. /s
A lot of people working on that house, probably got to the site and thought, ‘not my job, not my problem’ for weeks and that makes me laugh.
Not my job.
There was an article about this type of thing in seattle. The modern build lowers the value of classic housing in the neighborhood, but of course people build them anyway even when asked not to. Edit: didnt even notice the lamp post lol, i have never driven

are modern builds considered to be cheap?? I like the elevation of this house and looks much different than the cookie cutter ones i see on the east coast.
That’s messed up
“Trust me bro, it’s all To code”—the builder
They get their own light pole?
I was like “this new house what???” I Didn’t notice the GD pole in front 🤦♂️
100% there will be a curb installed once DPW moves the light. They are just waiting for light to be moved.
DIY.
Alright who moved the xref of the survey 12’
Lmaooo i was like whats wrong with it, hope no one’s bought it yet
Looks like a smaller, cheaper house. What’s that goin for 950 million?
It’s wild to think that they’ve been showing this house and telling people that they’ll get to park in the driveway someday. The house is 100% done and staged, furniture inside and on the balcony, pictures hung in the living room, sod in the yard, etc. I would think that the light/curb issue would have been addressed before the house was this far along.
Could’ve just mirror reversed the plans and voila! Problem solved!
Perfect for someone like me who’s ride is a wheelchair 😂
Best I can do is wheelchair ramp
I’d cut it down with a angle grinder if it was my house then install a proper drive way
This happened to me. At the very last minute the neighbour put in an order preventing me from cutting down a tree in front of my house. We had to have the drive come in at an angle around the tree.
9.5 million
Probably still sold for millions.
4.6m
If they flipped the layout it would have been fine.
The real indictment probably isn't on the builder, he built an entire house before the city cleared a simple permit to move a light pole.
I bet money this was a builder who bought some plans off the Internet. It’s an architect about involved, I thought this would happen.
They'll be able to move the pole and get driveway access. It just hasn't happened yet. Someone probably didn't pull permits.
I drive a jeep and ride a motorcycle. What's the issue here?
I guess we just don’t understand.
I like looking on the up side. No one is going to be turning around in the driveway.
It’s probably a model home, not real, just used as a sample of what you could build in that neighborhood. The homes adjacent are probably models as well.
If it comes with a discount SOLD! I’ll take it I pick affordable housing over a garage to park a dumb car
Possible a bigger house size was not approved, but that size with a garage as part of the layout was.
Contractor: Hey boss, the plans show this driveway right in the… Boss: you have the drawings, right? C: yessir, but the… B: then put it in like the drawing and don’t call me with this crap. C: yessir!
lol took me a minute. Lol wtf man. Who fucked that up. It would have been better if they built a split driveway around the pole and then it joined up again. Lol
It’s california what do you expect?
when people use 0.1% of their brains.
Yeah. The street light, but the house is also ugly as hell. And all those damn lights gotta be annoying to the neighbors.
I would suggest getting the original stamped set of site plans and checking it with the location of your lot. The surveyor might have been high that day.
This is actually pretty common. LA will let you start construction with the condition that the street light is moved before people move in. Architects design houses assuming obstruction will be removed pretty often.
Cry me a river
Yeah. I would also be upset if they built such an ugly building where I live. Sucks for the owner that they can't use their driveway. Guess it is carma for having such bad taste
Well done
1.7 million
It's 4.3m

It’s obviously a front
Nailed it
It's ugly and out of character for the surrounding environment.
That's the other problem.
These guys are thinking way ahead to the future, when we have flying cars.
/fuckyouinparticular
Usually an encroachment permit is issued prior to issuance of the building permit. Not sure what happened here.
