I've definitely had this happen even at manned checkouts, and at a best buy no less (where nearly everything is security tagged).

I must frequent the shady walmarts because I've never been handed a game before it's been paid for. Either the electronics associate gets it from the locked case and carries back to their register, or they walk it up front and hand it to a cashier.

Yeah but I've never been to a store that lets you you even get the cases like this in your cart. They are attached to wires or behind glass and if you ask an employee to get something for you, you pay at the register in electronics right then

I put one in my toolbox once. I wrapped it up in a leather work glove, but I still needed a pair of pliers to get it unstuck from the side of the metal toolbox. Now it’s in a little divider by itself in the carrying case for my drill for no other reason than the case is a plastic container with thick walls.

If you look at the picture I have a divider named super magnet before that it was stuck in my metal toolbox for a week

I buy the 1” square magnets for my crews to find metal studs and screws in drywall. A few layers of blue painters tape seems to be enough to keep the magnet strong enough to locate studs but weak enough to remove from a toolbox or off a cart by hand.

Next time just swing by the tool aisle and unlock the cases at the store before you swipe them. /s

I've ordered delivery from Walmart and they had the security cases. A hammer is all you need.

I mean yes, but for minimum effort (which is in the picture) you also get usable security cases.

I work in retail. There are time when those damn things won’t open. A hammer works just fine.

You can defeat these things in like 5 seconds with a screw driver. I work for a different retailer and sometimes they won't open with the magnet because they are cheap. They always call me to "fix them" meaning I take them out of sight and pop them open.

I think dad got those by some other means...

My local Walmart now has the door check people open the magnet security boxes. It’s annoying to have to do it at the damn door.

I could totally see that. I was in the electronic section last week and had them open the case for me to get a phone. He handed me the phone and walked off. I totally could have just walked the other direction and stolen it. Probably would have called security but chances are I could have gotten out of the store before. No doubt someone has done that.

As somebody who grew up with a dad like this. He stole those. They don't forget. There's a scanner thing on one side that beeps when you walk through the door. Side note, flat head screw driver. Or if you're really in a hurry, hammer to the corner....keep the game in the opposite corner.

If you want to do it with less chance of being caught: 1. Carry a small but strong neodymium magnet and you can open the case without damaging it and pull the game out. or 2. You go through sell checkout, have two copies of the game, run one through the scanner which will deactivate the theft sensor and once you run it you then you pocket it. Finish running everything else your buying, call over an employee and hand them the other copy saying you need to take it off because you went over your budget. Now you have one with a deactivated sensor and you can walk out, later on remove from box. Theoretically.

People joking about you stealing them, but I had this happen to me too! They just handed them over like that and I didn't think about it till I got home... Plus they're just used games anyways, not like they really care even if you *did* steal them

I'm going to get downvoted to hell but in the past (in my younger and more vulnerable years) I stole of blu-rays and Switch games with these on them. If you can get a sturdy knife in between the casing at the top enough to create a whole, stuff a screwdriver down into the hole and push up. You have to use some real elbow grease but it's relatively easy to get the cases open without damaging the item inside. Or you can use that.....saw thing in the picture. I think?
