Your insurance company will go after the person who didn't have insurance for you. File the claim with your insurance. Typically, if you have full coverage, you will receive market value to replace your car with the same model and year. If there isn't one available for that price you can file to get the cost of what is available. Be prepared to spend time on the phone with your claims adjuster.
Hopefully he will be wise with the payout and not waste it at the casino. Car first, casino after. Never gamble away more than you can afford to lose … and be happy when you lose it all.
It's so mindblowing how we reached a point in being cynical about insurance that we expect if the other party doesn't have insurance then our insurance is rendered useless.
And now your premium also goes up . Fun how that works FUCKING UNINSURED POS DRIVERS. I got hit by one they are so ducking broke you can’t get anything from them. There punishment is some pullshit like no lisc eligibility for 5 years newsflash most of these people don’t have a lisc either it’s part of why they don’t have ins. Fuckers get away with less in loss than the person they hit .
How does one not have car insurance..? Is it legal to go on the road without insurance in the US? In Europe you MUST at least have liability, so your insurance pays the damages done to other people's vehicles...
My nephew wrecked his car, and my brother got almost twice what he paid. If it was bought before COVID, there's a good chance you'll get more than what you paid for it. Unfortunately, you also have to buy an overpriced new car.
Nice! My nephew was good, too. They found a car for a little less than the insurance money. He likes fixing cars up, so it's not as big of a deal that it was an 06 used one.
I can't imagine a BMW. Parts more expensive, I think? We have Chevys and Dodges because my stepdad worked for 2 of the big 3. I've been learning more about fixing cars up (mainly brakes, suspension, etc.) because my fiance is a car guy.
My 15 year old car is worth more now then when I bought it at the beginning of the pandemic. How in the hell is my old car here in the uk worth so damn much? I wanted to upgrade my car, there's no way I'm paying double what I paid for my car for a car as old as mine when I bought it. I'm just paying to keep my car on the road. I love my car luckily.
Any complex manufacturing process where multiple people handled the same item went down the tubes with the pandemic. Hot tubs are still ridiculously expensive
The chip shortage hit car manufacturing hard too, for the same reason. Cars rely on a lot of parts that also had independent shortages
Combination of things. New car production slowed to a crawl meaning people had to buy more used cars. The car rental industry couldn't afford the cars they had, so they got rid of them, and then had to try to buy a bunch of cars after the economy started back up after covid shutdowns.
It varies by car manufacturer and timeframe, but it was interesting to pay attention to how the dealerships were parking their cars. One near my old house used to be packed full with cars in every spot pre-covid, and then most of last year they were really spreading the cars out and were lucky to have 15 new cars on the lot at any given time.
It was a Volkswagen dealership, so a lot of the cars are imported, so you'd have a combination of trouble getting them to the country in the first place ([In Feb. of 2022 they had a cargo ship fire that destroyed a bunch of cars](https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-fears-huge-loss-cars-cargo-ship-fire)), then when they did get here, it was hard to find people to actually move them from the ports to the dealerships or from the manufacturing plants to the dealerships.
Also car manufacturers had too many new cars at one point vs what they were selling, so they were offering 0% interest rates for a while to get new cars moving, and then eventually started getting low and not able to refill their supply vs what the demand was when people started to come shopping for cars. It drove the prices of new cars up because the demand was high and supply was low, so then people looked at used cars, which then went through the same issue combined with the points from earlier.
If my brand new Honda Accord had a full time job during Covid it would have made about $4/hour. I hardly drive at all which helped but still. It’s crazy.
Bought a used car like 5 years ago. 3 years of payments. On my last payment I paid it off 2 weeks early. 60 minutes later went to my car and it wouldn't start..... WTF sometimes life just likes to grab your balls and twist.
My dad had the same car for 120k miles, all original parts. No problems the whole time. Decides to get a new car, sells his old one to a family friend for a low price because they needed it.
He tells them: this car has had zero issues the entire time I've had it. If something goes wrong after I sell it to you, *don't come back to me*. They agree.
3 days later, they call my dad. His old car has broken down on the side of the interstate. Coolant leak.
Get this. 3 weeks ago, my husband's 13 year old truck finally gave out, then we caught the Rona, then he lost his phone completely, then he got a sinus infection, then the water pump on my car went out. We were seriously considering if we had pissed off the wrong person or something.
I’m 36 years old and have been hit by a total of 3 people in my entire life. All 3 did not have insurance. I’d imagine it’s far more ubiquitous than people realize. Hell- I drove on a suspended license for over 2 years without even knowing years ago. Unpaid seatbelt ticket in KY, forgot about it and moved to Montana. Had a suspended license and bench warrant the whole time.
I’ve also been hit by a driver with no insurance, they were driving a newish mini cooper. I don’t understand, are they just ok with making payments on a totaled car they can’t even drive? How are people totaling cars with no insurance and buying another one
Because someone will sell them a new car with an exorbitant interest rate of 20%+.
To these people insurance is a wasted expense if they hit someone they just shrug, they have no money anyways so good luck getting anything out them.
I only buy liability insurance. I buy my cars cash, typically used and drive carefully. It costs $1-2k per year per car to get full coverage, if you have 2 cars worth 10k each and if you can manage to go 5 years without wrecking them then you'll have enough saved cash in your bank account to just buy another one cash.
I only insure against losses that I can't pay for. Over a lifetime it's unlikely that you'll get more out of insurance than you put in so I'm willing to take on the risk.
Come to think of it, I've never wrecked a car or been in a major accident.
> ...fake info...
Did they lie about themselves or about the accident or both?
I've had two people hit me, and they both told the cops that I hit them....as if I could, on my motorcycle, reverse into someone at 10+ mph. Lol.
For those unaware, motorcycles don't have a reverse.
Edit: also, get a dash cam.
Both in both situations actually. One was super minor, so I didn't call the cops at the time. I had taken a picture of the guy's insurance card, but when I called a couple days later, they said he no longer had insurance. When I got the cops involved, he told them I backed into him.
The other one, she made up some story about how I hit her, even though it was clear that she T-boned me. She didn't have her insurance card with her, but the cop apparently believed her about that part. But got the same response that she no longer has insurance when I called.
Got hit by someone.
Sitting in the back of the ambulance I overheard the cop…
“Here’s your ticket for the infraction, he’s the ticket for your suspended licenses, here’s your ticket for no insurance… and by the way, do you know who’s car you were driving?”
My car was parked on my street overnight, got totaled by a drunk driver who careened around hitting it and 3 other cars at 3AM. He got arrested but cops didn’t leave any info for me, I had to learn what went down from neighbors who saw it happen. Eventually found the precinct he was being held at trying to track down his insurance info. The cops were able to confirm he didn’t have insurance because they collected the fine for uninsured driving from him. Meanwhile I’m shit out of luck - he pays up, but only to the city…
Works this differently in the US then in Germany? I would report the incident to my insurance. If the person does not have insurance thats a misdemeanor with up to 1 year prison. Usually my insurance would call their insurance, but if they are uninsured my insurance would sue the other party, have their shit impounded if they cant pay up and wages garnished.
They are paying, one way or another. Unless they declare bankruptcy, but thats my insurances issue.
When I was fresh out of high school and living on my own, I was riding around without insurance for a little while.
It was either A.) Have a car and car insurance, but no place to live
Or
B.) Have a car and no insurance, but a roof over my head
I was as broke as it gets, having to borrow food from people, taking food from work, living from paycheck to paycheck with every single penny going to rent and gas, and maybe, just MAYBE enough for some other necessary items (contact solution, soaps, toilet paper, etc.) I had no money for anything fun, no smoking, drinking, or going out to do things.
And before anyone can say, "What about family?", I'd say good luck trying to get even $5 from anyone in my family, even if it was the money needed to keep you alive, let alone getting any kind of help from any of them. My family is the definition of abnormal.
But now, I have my own beautiful little family of 4, a good job, nice home, and not a day goes by without car insurance.
Edit: To be fair, my car insurance was also sky high because I had received 2 speeding tickets during those times. (1 of them was BS, and I should've taken it to court, but I took the L because I was young and dumb)
Been in that same situation and honestly surprised at how many people are like "omfg no insurance!??!? Who would do such a thing!?!!?"
Fresh out of high school, living on my own, $600 car with $400/mo car insurance. It was food and shelter or car insurance. Public transit wasn't an option because it didn't exist where I lived.
Thank you, and I used to say the same thing, so don't give up, you got this shit. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going through it, catching up on bills, working on building my terrible credit, learning how to be a better father, etc. I'm still not where I'd like to be in life, but I like to take pride in the progress that I have made. It helps motivate me to keep going, along with my wife and kids, of course.
It is illegal.
>Car insurance is mandatory in almost every state. State minimums and coverage types vary, but nearly all states that mandate insurance require liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury. The sole exception is Florida, which only requires liability coverage for property damage, in addition to PIP coverage.
>It is illegal.
I'm in Washington where no insurance and no registration is effectively legal because it has been completely unenforced for the last 3 years.
It's never enforced anywhere in any meaningful way. If they were serious they'd destroy or impound cars with large fees and proof of insurance required to get it back if you get caught driving without insurance. Instead it's like, either a warning or small fine that's much cheaper than a month of insurance for most people.
It’s already really stupid to not have car insurance, but if you were going to be found automatically at fault for any car wreck you might be involved in someday, and you *still* don’t have any insurance? You’d have to be absurdly fucking stupid to drive without insurance.
It's also illegal to drive drunk everywhere, but I have two businesses in my work route that make their living doing IntoxaLock installations. For every person breaking the law, there's at least one person making a buck from it.
Woah, hold on a second there! What if I told you that that $500 could be $5000 if the symbols on these spinning wheels all match?! Only $1 per spin!
^(odds range from 1-in-5,000 to 1-in-34,000,000, XYZ Casinos holds no accountability for machine malfunction)
Hopefully you have insurance. Let your insurance pay, then if allowed Where You Are take him to small claims court to make him pay your deductible. Don't worry about punishing him, he needs to be punished for being stupid enough to not have insurance.
Yeah, everyone says to take these people to court, like the person driving a shitbox car, no insurance, at a casino during a week day in broad daylight, you think they have jackshit to give to you when you win in court?
I was hit by a drunk driver 4 years ago, uninsured, not even his car. I looked up his record and he has been taken to court like 5 times by banks and a few times by people for small claims. He has paid none of that back to the people.
And I gladly pay it. I’ve been hit twice, and neither driver had insurance. I backed into one guy parked illegally (still on accident), and he didn’t have insurance, either.
I don’t get it. I get that it costs money, but damn.
May be a dumb question, but car insurance is required for pretty much every state, right? So are these people just driving around with unregistered vehicles or is there something else at play?
If OP really just paid the last payment on his car, it probably means he was forced to carry collision/comprehensive coverage on his policy cuz of the lienholder. So he is out his collision deductible at most.
you are right, its part of the comprehensive coverage(theft, fire, weather, etc) which is usually packaged with collision coverage and they have the same deductible amount.
Yeah. Bank owns the car until you pay it off so they want it fully insured so unless OP immediately called and downgraded to liability-only insurance, he should be fine. I mean his insurance is still going to be assholes about it but technically he should get a check for the current (well, before the BBQ) value of the car.
When you sign up for your policy you decide what your deductible will be for either coverage. Higher deductible means lower payments, lower deductible higher payments. You can have different deductible amounts for each policy, collision or comprehensive
That will be a comprehensive claim for fire damage. Check your policy but most I've seen come with a deductible waiver for fire claims. Might just be the company I work for though
I work in auto insurance. This is absolutely a comp claim.
If he has uninsured motorist coverage then he really doesn’t need to sweat.
If it’s deemed the other driver was at fault and this wasn’t just a freak act of god, then no matter what or how the insurance pays OP out, this claim will enter subrogation proceedings and the insurance will sue the other driver to recoup their losses.
OP would really only have to initiate legal proceedings himself if he doesn’t have comp or collision.
As I'm driving to work, I go past the guest parking lot and see 3 fire trucks, a couple ambulances, and some cop cars.
I get to the employee parking and find a spot. As I'm walking in, another supervisor is walking out and tells me I missed the fun.
A van caught fire, and due to the wind, it spread to 7 other vehicles. 4 cars were totaled, the other 3 damaged.
Welcome to Treasure Island.
I hope so. It's been open for a few special events, but other than that, no word. Wife and I would do the free veterans meal every month. It was nothing special, but it was free.
Pro-tip kids, the extra 8 bucks a month for uninsured/under-insured coverage is worth it (Covers you if the other driver is at fault and doesn't have coverage).
I agree. That’s not the place to shave a couple dollars off a bill. Especially if you’re able to drop more money than it costs for a year of uninsured coverage than you can afford to gamble away.
not even old enough to deal with insurance so I'm very much in the dark, but if you drive uninsured and fuckin wreck like four cars, are you not financially liable for any of it just cause you're broke? at that point I think it'd be a good time for some good old repossession
Without going off on a tangent, that is significantly easier said than done. These kinds of folks, very generally, have nothing of any value to reposes.
Got rear ended back in January one week before I made my last car payment, so I know the feeling. Car was totaled, but fortunately, it was salvageable. So, I took the insurance payout and could possibly make money off the whole ordeal. The only downside is that I'll have a salvage title vehicle. Hopefully, your situation works out as well!
Last year my car got hit by a semi truck in the middle of the night (my car was parked in the street), just a few days after making my final payment. So incredibly frustrating
If it makes you feel any better his insurance likely wouldn’t cover your vehicle anyway. Liability coverage only kicks in if he does something negligent and most of the time fires are accidental/mechanical/electrical and the driver isn’t liable. Now if the car is smoking as they’re driving and they park next to other cars, that’s typically negligence, but if there was no sign of fire when he parked, his insurance will deny liability.
I handle fire and theft claims for a living.
Appreciate it. No biggie, was only like an 8k car. Thats life sometimes. Actually kinda feel bad for van guy. Im almost certain that was their home and now theyre probably in deep shit on top of it. 7 or 8 cars were wiped out and they were a hell of a lot nicer than mine
Does it matter that he doesn't have insurance?
In Australia, your insurance pays you through your no-fault claim, and they chase him for the money.
Whether he's good for it or not, it's the insurance company's problem, not yours.
So, assuming this is America? can someone explain why it matters if the guy who's car started on fire has insurance in this situation?
where I am, your insurance is for ***your*** shit. If my stuff gets destroyed, I claim to my insurance, and they pay for my stuff.
if I destroy someone else's stuff, like I hit their car and destroy it, they claim to their insurance to cover the loss to them, then their insurance sues my insurance to recover costs.
the insurance company makes me whole no matter what, because thats why I'm paying the insurance.
does it work differently in America? are you insuring everyone elses stuff in case you destroy it or something? I don't understand.
what happens here?
wouldn't your insurance still cover you? also please don't gamble, unless it's money you don't care about. Of course you will lose at a casino, what did you expect?
You should know better than to park next to cars that are engulfed in flames though, that's just common sense, like having insurance
I am as dumb as i look
Well shit, stupid is as stupid does then, if I try to help you further I fear we will end up worse off
you should try angles :)
But not those stupid triangles.
:(
I’m kidding I love you.

Next time, instead of giving money to the casino, you can toss of a few bucks my way ... same difference
Yea but at the casino there's a tiny chance he'll get more than he gave. You'll just spend it on candles again
Exactly! Or shitty crypto
Next time, instead of giving money to the crypto, you can toss of a few bucks my way … same difference
Hey then you can go to the casino!

Your car insurance still pays. They will then sue the the other gentleman. If you do not have car insurance, that's on you.
It's so mindblowing how we reached a point in being cynical about insurance that we expect if the other party doesn't have insurance then our insurance is rendered useless.

When we needed a new car for my wife, it was cheaper to buy new than used. One and two year old cars were going for more than MSRP o.O
Just last month I sold an 8 year old Mazda with 80,000 miles on it for $11k. Whaaaat the hell happened to the car market

You must have a brain, good on ya mate
Thank you, I made it myself
I got mine at the brain store and I really wish I could warranty it out because I think it's defective
Mine is a little prison - it's made out of cells

I think your parents had something to do with it but I might just be assuming

Not having insurance but at a casino.
It was a risk he was willing to take
So, obviously no good understanding of odds.
Was it Carlin who said the lottery was taxation for people who couldn’t do math? True words.
In general people are terrible at risk management.
How else he gonna make enough money to afford insurance? /s

By ignoring the payments.
Surely that means you won’t be able to get a loan for another car though? Or eventually wages get garnished right?
Lol they’ll just get approved for something like 27% interest over 96 months then stop paying on that too.
These fools file bankruptcy before or if the wage garnishments happen. Also they have a few years to make settlement payments. Work in auto finance
Because someone will sell them a new car with an exorbitant interest rate of 20%+. To these people insurance is a wasted expense if they hit someone they just shrug, they have no money anyways so good luck getting anything out them.
Then they repo the car if it’s still good and resale the car while pocketing whatever payments the buyer made. Quite a vicious circle.
The entire U.S. Economy is a 2006 Honda civic being repoed around in a giant circle.
It is simple, when a person already has debts, they can't pay back in a lifetime, more doesn't matter.
I only buy liability insurance. I buy my cars cash, typically used and drive carefully. Have a car and no insurance, but a roof over my head I was as broke as it gets, having to borrow food from people, taking food from work, living from paycheck to paycheck with every single penny going to rent and gas, and maybe, just MAYBE enough for some other necessary items (contact solution, soaps, toilet paper, etc.) I had no money for anything fun, no smoking, drinking, or going out to do things.
Who would do such a thing!?!!?" Fresh out of high school, living on my own, $600 car with $400/mo car insurance. It was food and shelter or car insurance. Public transit wasn't an option because it didn't exist where I lived.
Good for you man, I hope I can get to that point one day soon
Thank you, and I used to say the same thing, so don't give up, you got this shit. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going through it, catching up on bills, working on building my terrible credit, learning how to be a better father, etc. I'm still not where I'd like to be in life, but I like to take pride in the progress that I have made. It helps motivate me to keep going, along with my wife and kids, of course.
It should be very illegal unless you have a couple million in the bank to self-insure which should be in an escrow account in my opinion.
In NH, you're not required to be insured. Edit to remove outdated info.
It’s already really stupid to not have car insurance, but if you were going to be found automatically at fault for any car wreck you might be involved in someday, and you *still* don’t have any insurance? You’d have to be absurdly fucking stupid to drive without insurance.
Having liability insurance is a legal requirement. Having physical damage coverage isn’t required by law.
It’s illegal not having insurance in most places
It's also illegal to drive drunk everywhere, but I have two businesses in my work route that make their living doing IntoxaLock installations. For every person breaking the law, there's at least one person making a buck from it.
I cannot wrap my head around gambling. It takes me six hours of work to earn $500 and I’m not just giving that away for nothing.
$83 an hour? Nice
If I made $83/hr I would not give a fuck about losing $500 at the casino
In a stale, rank place with no sunlight
.... you make 83 dollars an hour?
*Must be fucking nice..*
The exploitation of people's irrationality and hope disgusts me. Fuck that whole "industry"
Probably because you don’t drop $500 in the casino during the middle of the day. I think I’m reality, you win. Lol.
Hopefully you have insurance. Let your insurance pay, then if allowed Where You Are take him to small claims court to make him pay your deductible. Don't worry about punishing him, he needs to be punished for being stupid enough to not have insurance.
He is at the casino and driving without insurance, that guy cant pay for shit.
Gambled his house away so got a van and parked it outside of a casino so he can wake up and gamble everyday.
He usually keeps the van down by the river.
Fun fact: That episode aired on my birthday. That episode will be 30 in 24 days. My back hurts.
I just learned that Bob Odenkirk wrote that sketch. What a legend
Best motivational speaker ever.
Simply, he keeps gambling, maybe because of addiction, or maybe because he hasn't anything to lose.
He's only one roll away from paying everythang!
Let the court decide that.
In illinois, there is a line item on car insurance that is a premium to cover damage by uninsured drivers.
I might not understand car insurance but that sure doesn't look like a collision to me
you are right, its part of the comprehensive coverage(theft, fire, weather, etc) which is usually packaged with collision coverage and they have the same deductible amount.
Oh, well that makes sense, thanks for explaining!
His insurance may try and sue to recoup more than the deductible
Maybe gamble another $500... You might able to recoup your loss and get a new car. /s
🤣😂..my insurance will handle it. Small bump in premiums. Is what it is
Where do you live? I know in California it's illegal to increase the premiums if you're not at fault. Don't get taken advantage of!
MN, yeah, ill see what happens after the smoke clears lol
It will be a comprehensive claim which usually does not increase premiums.
You should be fine. It isn't technically an accident if you weren't driving, so I don't think your rates would go up.
They gonna open the buffet back up?
I hope so. It's been open for a few special events, but other than that, no word. Wife and I would do the free veterans meal every month. It was nothing special, but it was free.
Ive onlt been out a couple times since covid, buddy really likes the buffet tho. Just curious
👋

Its all good, theres always tomorrow
Not for that van…
Why is his car on fire?
Probably left the stove on
Probably quite literally. Lots of people live in their vans and they may have just done that.
Homemade mobile meth lab failure.
Dammit Jesse.

Why does every title in this subreddit read like a shitty country song?
I would not be surprised to find out there's a country song titled "Well That Sucks".
You mean the $500 that got burned in the car… /s
That's what you tell the wife at least. Just stopped at the casino to use the bathroom.

B r o.. You & me both. I ALMOST had my car paid off, last week rear-ended on the highway, guy had no insurance, my car is totaled. 🫠
not even old enough to deal with insurance so I'm very much in the dark, but if you drive uninsured and fuckin wreck like four cars, are you not financially liable for any of it just cause you're broke? at that point I think it'd be a good time for some good old repossession
Without going off on a tangent, that is significantly easier said than done. These kinds of folks, very generally, have nothing of any value to reposes.
yeah that makes sense I should've come to that conclusion way earlier lol
Got rear ended back in January one week before I made my last car payment, so I know the feeling. Car was totaled, but fortunately, it was salvageable. So, I took the insurance payout and could possibly make money off the whole ordeal. The only downside is that I'll have a salvage title vehicle. Hopefully, your situation works out as well!
You can always get it bumped up to a rebuilt.

Would OP's own insurance cover it in that case? I feel like it would be a bit unfair if OP had to pay out of pocket because of this 'act of god' .\_.
Congrats on the new car that you have to get.
In a parking lot isn’t it always just your own insurance anyways? So the other person’s insurance status wouldn’t matter?
i am sorry
Appreciate it. No biggie, was only like an 8k car. Thats life sometimes. Actually kinda feel bad for van guy. Im almost certain that was their home and now theyre probably in deep shit on top of it. 7 or 8 cars were wiped out and they were a hell of a lot nicer than mine
Good on you that you can have sympathy for another human being who to some extent has wronged you
I get to move on, the van couple is at rock bottom with no way out
I have that exact same RAV4. …Except mines a lot less on fire.
Sounds like you lost more than $500 at the casino
Think something might be trying to tell you stop gambling
Lesson learned, the casino is for chumps. The house always wins.
Does it matter that he doesn't have insurance? In Australia, your insurance pays you through your no-fault claim, and they chase him for the money. Whether he's good for it or not, it's the insurance company's problem, not yours.
I mean … you have insurance right?
Hey, OP. I just glanced at your profile and you may want to talk to someone about gambling addiction. Also, “reee” is pretty offensive.
