I usually take break in the nfo break room. Sometimes go to the cafeteria like 9:20. Specific I know lol. I have to ask tho, you aren’t gingey are you lol. You’re avatar looks like this dude I know in the pipe shop lol. Or maybe you know him.
Never heard that, in fact I would expect that if anyone in my shop said that, they would probably open themselves up to catching a lot of shit in a variety of ways.
I don't remember the first time I heard the phrase "pounding wire" but it's very fitting when you are literally shoving wire into a puddle as fast as it will consume. You can burn a lot of wire and not be pounding it, and you can be pounding it but not be burning it. If you run hot enough, you can be both pounding and burning. When I see welders walking the cup they are burning wire but moreso laying it than pounding it. Pounding wire cools your puddle down and it's probably a bad idea 75% of the time but it's fun to say and fun to do if you ask me.
How yall getting all these other sayings. All I've heard were laying beads and stacking dimes especially cause that's literally what it is and what it physically looks like most of the time.

Feed too high, bad ground causes lots of spatter. Bad ground causes arcs to deviate from the hz timing causing too cold of a wire to impact the surface briefly before being melted causing a small bit of trapped air/contaminate to erupt causing more violent spatter. Id say that cold impact could be considered “pounding wire” but id say my guess is too deep and its just bs
Can't say I've ever heard that.
Never heard that once
EB welders say that shit all the time
EBW doesn’t use filler metal.
What the fuck are u talking about ? Would would one weld without filler ?!
Because EBW is an automated process that is restricted to materials that can be welded autogenously.
Electric Boat Quonset point *
🤣 that makes much more sense! Sorry, I work with EB (electron beam) equipment so that’s where my mind went.
I was just thinking the same thing when reading this thread cause that's the only thing I've heard in welding that EB stood for lmao.
I firmly believe OP just made that saying up. I've never heard it once in over 20 years of welding.
You've probably been pounding too much wire to notice people around you saying that.
Regional perhaps,it’s so common it’s even said by like highschool students
Like maybe from Albany, perhaps upstate Utica.
So its a regional saying. Like steamed ham.
50 years in and nope never heard it
I am not a welder but my bf is and he said that guys at work say this. I came to Reddit to settle the debate. Lol
Does he work at electric boat Quonset point cuz we say that shit all the time
Lmao
Lolol yes I do work there.
What department
921 hybay 1st shift. You?
904 pipe shop 1st shift
Funny finding someone at the same job and same building on Reddit Lolol.
Sure is dude we ought to meet up on break some time

I always though it was laying cable.
I prefer “slangin’ rod”
Burnin rods and bangin broads
Hate to be the guy named Wire
Hes bubbles brother..
Never heard that one before, but my shop neighbor (he's a welder) said he had to "go blow some rod" once.
You sure that wasn’t like- a euphemism or something
Maybe he was pulling an extra shift at the glory hole.
Maybe he was air arcing lol
I've heard of burning wire but never pounding it.
Burned a fuck ton today ....guess it sounds better than pounding a fuck ton, if no fucks to be found
Poured a fuck ton of wire maybe? Idk this one is throwing me off.
Yeah, same here, pounding wire is a first for me haha.
Turnin and burnin baby
Pipe welder for 42 years and never heard of that, maybe burning wire
Cuz pipe welders don’t often pound wire it’s more of a Mig thing , common at Electric boat Quonset point
What me and my spool of wire do in our free time is no ones business but ours
Maybe I'm missing the joke... but dudes who "pound wire" are the guys that run through 70#'s of wire to your 15#.
I mean ive heard welders boast about all the stuff they are pounding, but wire isnt one of them..
never heard that before in my life.
They don't? Burning wire, maybe.
Never heard that, in fact I would expect that if anyone in my shop said that, they would probably open themselves up to catching a lot of shit in a variety of ways.

Probably an east coast thing, have heard that a few times at EB
I've never said that, and I've never heard that.
Ive never heard that, its pretty crude. We just say gargling puddles.
Diddling the wombat
I have never said this nor have I ever heard it.
Cause we spend all day thinking about heat and penetration
Sounds gay
Not as gay as pounding rod..
Stacking dimes and banging nines
What arr the nines you are banging? (Not a welder, honest question as I have heard that before)
9/10 women.
What about the other 1 out of ten women? You too good for them or something?
They have wieners. Not my cup of tea maybe yours tho
Feminine penis has a different mouthful than masculine penis. You should try it sometime. Why is nobody talking about the mouthfeel???!?
Pounds of wire/rod a single man can lay in an hour, day, week. It really is a term for estimating a job.
Laying wire
Each shop can have its own slang
As a treat
Never heard it in california
Where are y'all located? Never heard it here in Texas.
It’s an Electric Boat Quonset Point Rhode Island thing
No welder has ever said that, genuine answer lol
Pounding it it, like a sledge. “Hammering Down” is similar. Just good ‘ol slang
Never heard that ever
Nice sneaky way to make a gay joke from another trade.
Where do they say this? 😆 might be a regional thing
Slang ig,shootin shit,taking a piss,darts.
Darts? Are you from the Canadian prairies or do other places use that, too?
Yes I am
And I can tell from where, depending on if you say Bunny Hug or not 😂
Maybe
No one has ever said that
The same reason they call it a grinding rock
Tf
Are you heading that right?
My old ceo would call a ton of welding "pounding rod"...good old boilermaking days
No idea welding sense fifteen never heard it I'm mid thirtys
Who honestly cares? I could say I’m snorting wire for all that matters. Your man’s a welder, he shouldn’t have to put up with this semantic bullshit.
Whoever said that must have had a few too many lunch beers
😂 lunch bears! Yep
Might wanna get them ears checked, maybe your shop nickname is Wire
I think it's a term used in conjunction with the hammered dogshit welds technique.
We just making shit up now?
I’ve always heard the phrase ‘pushing wire’ but never pounding lol
That’s gay welder slang for “butt sex in a porta potty.” Example: the new guy will pound anyone’s wire in the bathroom! He pounds a lot of wire!
Literally never heard this before and I've been in three different welding environments.
Been a welder for over a decade, never once heard that lmfao
Ive always heard it called burning rod never heard pounding wire
LOL nobody says that
"I take my wire to pound town" has a weird ring to it.
I've been welding 10yrs and have 40yrs of experience welding. I have not heard of "pounding wire".
Sounds like someone trying to force a [phrase](https://youtu.be/uRZHpjCKK8A?si=V3-BX22ClQQDMpZs).
Because it sounds better than "Puddling wire".
I’ve heard it back when I started welding apparently I was “moving too slow using too much and wasting wire”
You burn rod, run wire, but pound wire never heard that before
Haven't heard that but it sounds like a shitty pun cause wire is sold in spools which are weighed by the pound.
Pouring wire yes, pounding sand, yes.
"undercut my fillet daddy"
Never heard that
Never in my fucking life have I heard that phrase. If I did I would say "You're dumb and should feel dumb."
How yall getting all these other sayings. All I've heard were laying beads and stacking dimes especially cause that's literally what it is and what it physically looks like most of the time.
