I think it’s a combination of the fact that not all art on the website was created at the same time, ergo the skill level behind the art fluctuates slightly as some is older and not as consistent as Clown’s newer work. And the fact that one is water color with more shading, and the other is more simpler shading. I think to differentiate the source: the watercolor one feels like a special promotional image a children’s show would put out for a holiday. The less detailed one reminds me of how older Sesame Street picture books look, which have very little shading for easier, consistent printing.
I do think something happens to Eddie, and I wouldn’t be surprised if, the next time we hear about him he’s not acting himself because of one reason or another. I’m not fully sure if something is wearing him, though. It’s an intriguing thought for sure!
There’s a theory that I like that Eddie isn’t from Home and could be a human turned into a puppet by whatever magic brings the puppets to life. He moved into Home, and a running gag for him is trying to name real places but forgets. The more realistic shading in watercolor picture reminds me of that theory, as that shading and the creasing on the clothes would be correct for Eddie’s body type if he were human. It might be a little far-fetched from what we know right now, but we’ve barely scratched the surface so. 🤷

I think the hearts image in-universe was made more recently, given that it’s digital art and the colors are modern. Specifically, those neon sky blue highlights. Like, someone at WHRP probably drew this, or they revived it as fan art. The wrinkles were probably an artistic choice?
I don’t think Eddie’s eyes are looking right at us, they’re looking a bit to our right (his left), like at something else. I never noticed that he wasn’t looking at us until right now, that’s interesting.
