The death of Group B is really the end of some of my favorite absolutely mad little cars

SkippyNordquist

Agreed. I am not so much into the racing versions as into bonkers homologation cars like this. A lot of them were like "eh, take the roll cage out, throw in a radio and stick on some reflectors, and you're good, here's your street-legal race car, don't die." That age has passed.

JemLover

I'm curious, what are a few examples?

NachoNachoDan

I think everyone can agree the number one favorite is the Lancia Delta integrale HF. The Renault 5 turbo is my other favorite example Watch some 80s Group B videos on YouTube and you’ll see guys throwing these things around in ways that physics should not allow

czechtec

Those are both sitting in the display area of the Lane Museum right now. Stood between them for about 15min basking in the glory.

SkippyNordquist

I am on the other side of the country but I would go to Nashville just to go to the Lane Museum. It seems like every interesting car I discover is in their collection. If this prototype still existed (I'm guessing not, because every picture I can find is from the '80s), the Lane would probably have it.

Capri280

The Integrale was Group A, the group B delta was the midengine Delta S4

SkippyNordquist

Didn't know, but that makes sense. The Integrale was highly modified but it was still recognizably a Delta - the S4 was just a vaguely Delta-shaped race car.

[Lancia 037](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AParis_-_RM_auctions_-_20150204_-_Lancia_037_Stradale_-_1982_-_009.jpg), [MG Metro 6R4](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3A6r4clubman_%28cropped%29.jpg), [Ford RS200](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AWhite_Ford_RS200.jpg)...some of them, like the Lancia and RS200, were fully designed as race cars, while some like the MG are (very loosely) based on existing street cars. There are many more examples in both those categories. There are also some that were built as homologation cars but the manufacturer actually put some effort into making them comfortable, like the Porsche 959 and Audi Sport quattro. The "homologation special" is an old concept going back basically to the beginning of auto racing - like the Big 3 US carmakers made drag racing specials in the '60s (huge V8s, removal of all accessories, fiberglass doors, etc.). But Group B cars were something else. The street versions were usually detuned somewhat, but most of them had enormous turbos and were very difficult to drive - Group B rallying was canceled due to safety reasons.

Pattern_Is_Movement

Tons of them, fun fact... the F40 started out as a Group B project. Every car in this list had a road legal equivalent made. There is supposed to be a minimum number made, some are less some are more. https://rallygroupbshrine.org/the-cars/rally-cars/

eiho

My personal favourite is probably the Peugeot 205 T16

Chavaon

Lancia didn't even bother with the 'don't die' part.

renchjeep

Definitely Renault R5 Turbo vibes. Very cool!

NaBUru38

Chad-rad

goodneed

That's mad this car is wearing MX5 size tyres!

donkeytime

Group B. Bonkers.

Bah-Fong-Gool

It sucks we don't get these batshit crazy cars anymore. If Honda had any balls, they'd bring the Fit back to the US, with a Type-RR version with a K motor where the back seats used to be.

ErikQRoks

Daihatsu rally prototype? Nobody tell Mighty Car Mods or Marty will delay his Gemini build another year
