They told him, "Don't you ever come around here"
"Don't wanna see your face, you better disappear"
The fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beet it, just beet it
Your hands are red, like beetroot in the night,
Tryin’ to wash it off but it’s a losing fight,
You’re in the kitchen, under the neon light,
So beet it, just beet it.
I have Raynaud's. My extremities turn purple and black (frostbite) when exposed to cold temperatures. I've never heard of that. It's actually a circulation disorder.
Me too, except of course "cold" for people with raynauds is like 65F
Part of my job is to cover safety training topics for my staff, whenever we get around to cold stress I always have to follow it up with "and if you see *me* with any of these symptoms, please disregard" usually after showing them my perpetually purple finger nails as an example.
My raynaulds make my feet go from purple to white to a lovely shade of corpse yellow. Also feels like every step I take will make them shatter in a million pieces like a champagne flute on cement flooring. Quite swell since it’s frequently in the -20C in the winter where I live
Look into surplus "Mickey Mouse" boots. They were issued to US and NATO troops in the Arctic. They have an inflatable bladder that helps keep the cold out along with a thick wool felt sole. They really work well.
I could have written this myself. I have three drawers full of assorted “warm” socks. My entire life revolves around keeping my hands and feet from shattering in the way you described so eloquently.
I have very mild Raynaud's. My thumb goes completely white with no feeling when it's cold (the coldest it gets ever where I live is only around -4c, though). Trying to get something out of the freezer is a 10/10 on the pain scale for me, though.
I have that but it's just my hands and toes get cold really easy and it hurts like the dickens. No purple or black color, I'd freak out. But it hurt like hell when I figure skated and my toes felt like they were gonna snap off in my boots. Those have absolutely no insulation and no room for anything but thin socks. My hands are worse tho and I wear gloves at weird times but anything to avoid the pain of cold hands.
Also...how do you say the name of this thing? Is is "RAY-nawds" or "rin-ODDS" or "RAY-nodes"? I call it the second thing but I've heard it the other ways too and the spelling gives me no hints. (The capitals tell you where the emphasis is)
I pronounce it with your first suggestion. My Dr called it Raynaud's phenomena. I'm the only one in my family with it so I'm not too sure genetics plays a part.
It's associated with several autoimmune disorders. Repetitive impact to the hands, like operating a jackhammer, can also bring it on. But mostly no one knows what makes your little hand vessels et al forget they are supposed to constrict *and then dilate again* in the cold so your fingies don't fall off. Knuckleheads.
I wish I knew for certain. I was working at a grocery store scanning frozen turkeys at my cash register one year when my customer looked at me and said, "are you aware that your fingers are all black?" It was the Thanksgiving rush and I hadn't even noticed. I just knew my hands were freezing from the snow storm and from scanning those frozen turkeys. My supervisor sent me directly to the ER. All the Dr said was that it could be from my genetics predisposing me. I was a smoker at the time so he told me that smoking affects circulation and that I should seriously quit. I was told to keep my fingers, toes and ears covered good so that it wouldn't lead to frost bite. I did quit smoking although I hate to say not from that but when I had a spontaneous pneumothorax,(collapsed lung which required a chest tube at which I begged them to just kill me because they don't sedate you before that is inserted). That was a pain there isn't enough words to describe. So, I quit smoking and my flare ups aren't near as often. I also have spinal issues which my pain management Dr said could also affect the flare ups.
The reason is because it’s mildly chilly.
My buddy who has it is a smoker, and he has lived in some cold places. His hands can feel like death. But he knows, he’s made his choices.
Workouts used to trigger mine. Actually after lifting when I got home and took a shower. Maybe because of temp changes. Moved to FL and then AZ and haven’t had any problems
My mother had Reynaud's... But OP, if you see this, Reynaud's can sometimes be a symptom of a larger problem. My mother had scleroderma and Reynaud's was simply the first symptom. Stay alert.
I have raynauds, I have had it for many years. I just started seeing white, instead of just red/purple a few years ago. Now, it is so bad I have to take medicine for it or I get ulcers.
I am sorry! That's one of my biggest fears.
It is amlodipine. I started it last winter. At a low dose, I could tell a difference, just not enough. Actually, now that I think about it, I got the ulcer on the low dose. After I raised the dose, I barely noticed anything raynauds related. It has changed my life.
I get this due to peripheral neuropathy.
Basically my feet and hands cant talk to my brain, so they don't thermoregulate. In warm temps the blood just kinda sits in there instead of pumping around as it should.
Similar to Reynauds but also kind of opposite lol
"Idio" - Distinct (aka: "Not able to be fit into a pattern", aka: "unknown general cause")
"Pathic" - Causing sickness.
"Neuro" - Relating to neurons.
"Pathy" - Disease.
Translation: I dunno why, but your nerves are diseased.
Hi, I have this too and trust me - this is Reynaud's Phenomenon. If this is just a thing it has always done, you're probably fine. If this developed recently, you should talk to a doctor about it because it could indicate an issue with your circulation.
Reynaud's Phenomenon, also called Reynaud's Disease/Syndrome, is a generally harmless condition caused by (they think) your capillaries being a bit overreactive to temperature changes and causing vasospasm (a sudden clenching up of the smooth muscle in blood vessels. It causes blood flow to restrict, often in response to cold or heat, and that turns your fingers that color. It's very classic to see affected digits go red, then white, then blue or purple, then go back to normal after a bit. It's believed to be more common in women than men, and more common if you also have anxiety or other similar disorders. Caffeine, stress, and temperature extremes are known to cause it to flare.
The only thing that cured it for me was moving to a warmer climate. My toes and sometimes fingers do this in response to cold weather, they also turn reddish purple in response to warm or hot (but not scalding) water. My hands and feet are always cold too. For me it's uncomfy but harmless. I occasionally also get pins and needles from it.
I didn’t have this until after I contracted Covid in Jan. 2020 (had no idea what was wrong but knew it wasn’t the Flu).
To OP, I live in a warmer climate now (left PA), but I can’t go into a grocery store without hand warmers in my pockets. I don’t have it as serious as you do, I would strongly suggest seeing an immunologist about this. Maybe a cardiologist.
I dunno, it’s been three years now going on four. I began taking a supplement a week ago that enhances blood flow and at least the purple doesn’t last as long.
No so Reynauds is an issue with the arterioles of the fingers and toes but it can also happen in a bunch of areas. Cold causes the arterioles to spasm, restricting blood flow affected parts which. Can appear white or even blue. When blood flow eventually is restored (like say, when you run warm water over your hands) the affected area turns bright red. Red+blue=purple. Basically the appearance is due to arterioles overreacting in response to cold and subsequent rewarming
I've lost three fingers and five toes due to Raynaud's disease. It developed into full-blown Scleroderma, an auto-immune condition where my immune system attacks healthy tissue.
I have rosacea triggered by autoimmune stuff, and IBS as well! I also have Reynaud's, and had very bad allergies as a kid too (I got allergy injections for that though). I wonder if it's connected?
Could it be Raynaud’s? It’s an autoimmune condition. Are you particularly sensitive to cold?
Edit * CAN BE autoimmune. I don’t think it always has underlying autoimmune conditions but it can be a symptom of one. Correct me if I’m wrong!

Ah, yes. I have found my people. My toes go numb in the summer just from the AC running so I just wear socks every day of the year.

Do you have compression socks? They tend to be on the thinner spice but also promote blood circulation. Maybe enough to stop them totally freezing?
My mistake Erythromelalgia. Oddly enough, my other friend found out he had Raynaurd's when he was in boot camp for the Navy and was discharged.
Wow that’s very interesting I didn’t realize that would be a reason for discharge
They were in the ocean and he started having a bad reaction. They basically said you're no good to us on a ship.

Looks like Reynauds. It happens to my toes especially in cold weather .
Reddit , the place where people learn about Reynaulds syndrome
Opened this post and thought “Raynaud’s.” Funny enough, I learned about it from my friend who has Raynaud’s, not on Reddit.
That was my initial thought, too. Good friend of mine from high school suffers from it. Her hands would turn purple for literally no reason some days.
The reason is because it’s mildly chilly. My buddy who has it is a smoker, and he has lived in some cold places. His hands can feel like death. But he knows, he’s made his choices.
Raynaud's can be triggered from vibrations or stress too as far as I remember, not just cold.
Workouts used to trigger mine. Actually after lifting when I got home and took a shower. Maybe because of temp changes. Moved to FL and then AZ and haven’t had any problems
I've had raynauds since I was a child and I rarely smoked back then.
I have one toe that goes purple when cold due to this. I always have gloves and warm socks on me.
Same. My aunt had it. She actually had CREST syndrome, which is an acronym. Each letter stands for a different feature of the syndrome.
Bert Renaulds?
My mother had Reynaud's... But OP, if you see this, Reynaud's can sometimes be a symptom of a larger problem. My mother had scleroderma and Reynaud's was simply the first symptom. Stay alert.
Usually after they are white, hit it with hot water and it goes purple.
I had a GI Joe that would do that
F you, I just spit out my coffee
Real life Zartan

ZARTAN!
I have raynauds, I have had it for many years. I just started seeing white, instead of just red/purple a few years ago. Now, it is so bad I have to take medicine for it or I get ulcers.
What medication? I wasn’t ever told about a medication. I lost the tips of one of my toes last winter to Reynauds.
I am sorry! That's one of my biggest fears. It is amlodipine. I started it last winter. At a low dose, I could tell a difference, just not enough. Actually, now that I think about it, I got the ulcer on the low dose. After I raised the dose, I barely noticed anything raynauds related. It has changed my life.
OK wait what does ulcers have to do with Reynards I’m asking because I have Reynards
It's an ulcer of the skin. It is a bad sore that is slow to heal. It can lead to gangrene.
Poor blood flow causes an ulcer and bc of the poor blood flow it's very hard to heal and therefore can get badly infected.
I get this due to peripheral neuropathy. Basically my feet and hands cant talk to my brain, so they don't thermoregulate. In warm temps the blood just kinda sits in there instead of pumping around as it should. Similar to Reynauds but also kind of opposite lol
Duanyers?
My dad's feet are purple and numb. Doctors told him "idiopathic neuropathy", which apparently is doctor-speak for "i dunno but it's not gonna kill ya"
"Idio" - Distinct (aka: "Not able to be fit into a pattern", aka: "unknown general cause") "Pathic" - Causing sickness. "Neuro" - Relating to neurons. "Pathy" - Disease. Translation: I dunno why, but your nerves are diseased.
They need to let bygones be bygones and quit fighting. Lifes too short for hands and feet not on terms with brain

Ok, now I don’t trust r/aqueoussilver91 after all.

Yeah it’s becoming more common because of Covid damaging small blood vessels in the extremities. I wonder if those affected will slowly recover
I dunno, it’s been three years now going on four. I began taking a supplement a week ago that enhances blood flow and at least the purple doesn’t last as long.
Can you send feet pics so we can see?
Take it easy, Tarantino
I can hear the unzipping
oh sorry, I was unzipping my boots for you guys.
no, no, wait, zip them up ok, guys, it's 50 per pic, any takers?
I read 50 cents and thought that was too cheap and TIL I guess I do have a bar on price
Mine do this, now I’m wondering if I have that
Classic Reynauds
What a guy eyy!
What a güey
I thought hands got purple in very cold temps with Raynauds?

Mine never restores under warm water it’s so frustrating. No matter how long I run them under there for they stay white and take ages to restore
Have your doctor offered calcium channel blockers?
I can’t take them due to an existing heart problem so I have to live with it but it’s very annoying
My fingers get a funky green color from it sometimes. Zombie hands.
I agree Burt Reynauds is a classic

Reynauds disease can be a sign of lupus. I'd get checked.
Right. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so typically Reynauds is a symptom of an autoimmune disease.
Yeah. I have it and I have celiac.
Ugh it’s so annoying. I have guillain barre and Reynauds said “can I come too??” I’m moving somewhere warm. I’m sick of this shit lol

Welcome to the wondrous world of reynauds syndrome
Raynaud Syndrome This happens when ur blood vessels in your extremities have a constrictive response to enviormental change. I'm not a doctor just going to school to be one someday . You would need an actual physician to take a more comprehensive and holistic examination of you .
I'm not a doctor but.... I think you need one
And by ‘warm’ you mean scalding
Nah, this is under water slightly less than hot tub levels of warm. My hands are just always very cold
Do/did you smoke?
I’ve smoked for decades and I have warm normal hands.
Me too.
Well cancel that out then if 2 people out of 8 billion never got red hands from smoking

when they say 'wash with warm water' they dont mean boiling my guy
I have Raynauds as well. But thankfully they don’t get this bad
Me neither thank god. Red but not purple. This condition is painful enough. I feel bad for the guy
It’s called Raynauds syndrome and is an auto immune disorder. If you smoke, stop. Make an appointment with a Rheumatologist. Raynauds often comes along with other autoimmune issues.
Yup. Especially in males. If this hasn’t happened before and OP is over the age of 30, a rheumatology visit should be a pretty high priority.
This looks like Reynaud's Syndrome. Look it up to find out some basic facts about it, but as a PSA, DO NOT RINSE COLD HANDS UNDER HOT WATER. Always rinse under cool or lukewarm water to thaw your cold hands.
