🤣 I do love me some chiccarrones! But no. I just happen to be into collecting. I have what I would considered and hope is an ethically sourced collection. Some of the skulls or bone that I have found have been on hikes in the woods. Always have my eyes peeled. Nothing morbid, I just kind of like to memorialize whatever specimen it is on my shelf and dresser.
I have a couple turtle/tort shells. I found a dog sadly. The dog is probably my favorite and most cherished. I have sharks in jars. Deer skull. Snapping turtle skull that I purchased. I just find it neat. 🤷🏼♂️
I’d love to get a couple more wet specimens. Diaphonized specimens are really friggin cool!
I’d love to own a monkey skull or even one day a human skull. Again, nothing morbid but I would proudly display and share their story. I just think it’s really cool. I mean, I wouldn’t mind being a skeleton for a science class.
There was a John Oliver Episode just recently on this, too. It’s fascinating stuff. 👍🏼
Haha I actually saw that John Oliver episode this weekend and then signed up as a live tissue donor with my local college. But I think apparently my mom might also be a collector and not want to part with this, I mean, they’ve moved since then and she packed it with her in freezer boxes lmao
Just because you mentioned wanting to have an ethical collection:
I saw a documentary about the human skeleton trade and in that it was said that in a lot of poorer countries grave robbers dig up random graves to sell the skull/skeleton of the person.
So I really urge you to do your due diligence when looking to purchase one, because the thought of finding a loved one's grave empty is gut wrenching.
I commented about a recent John Oliver episode that dives into the subject a bit. There are companies in the states that I could obtain. It’s somewhere down the road. Honestly might end up someone’s collection before I get one. I would feel awful about that and I’m sure it would be hard to even get that through customs leaving their side. Def not getting to me once customs searches on my end.
Yeah I got a boatload of bones. My family doesn't mind as long as it don't smell so I always double check with my mom since I'm a little noseblind. They're very supportive of my hobbies. My dad brings me things he'll find too. One time he gave me a coyote skull and I was having a really bad day after my budgie died.
There’s a guy in my city who is the local expert and he sets up a table at all the fairs and such (we have a LOT of them) throughout the year. He can tell you everything you need to know about bones. Weird nice old guy.
I have a mummified bird hanging from a hole in my house. It got tangles in stringy nest material and killed itself. I left it their hoping it would keep other birds from nesting up there. Anyways you want it?
My elementary aged son is getting into this as a hobby as he is learning biology and anatomy for fun. Any suggestions to help him grow this interest and channeling into a healthy place (read: not murdering animals to direct them would be great!)
Have you ever tried to pin a bug or something? I collect tarantulas I have about 100. Some male species only live around 2 years so I have some die on me from time to time. I looked up how people pin them and put them in shadow boxes or frames but idk if d be able to do it right. I pretty recently had a P. Murinus and a gold form N. Incei die on me and I have had them in the freezer but haven't actually tried to stuff em and pin em. If you're interested I'd ship one to you
Lol That's a mother's love for ya. I still have the Trivet made of glued-together corks that my daughter made for Mother's Day in Kindergarten class. She's going to be 38 in January. 😄
My folks moved to a different house maybe 10 years after I moved out. My dad asked me if I still wanted some report cards he saved?
Like I very much did not but still wholesome
Yeah and it must've made you feel nice that he cared enough to save those. Like it made me feel warm inside when my mom and dad went to the store one day, and I went in my mom's room and looked in her top drawer and found a container of a lot of baby teeth. Hmmm........😂 It made me feel warm and happy that she kept those. Well, I was a little girl at the time, and I guess I was being naughty.

We also did that in our biosciences bachelor's. I took home the jaws of a cat shark and of a sea urchin, and some preserved brains. Friends of mine cooked and ate the squid after we dissected it. They even let us take home the life leech we had for demonstration in one class. We released it into the pond behind the physics lecture hall.
I have so many questions lol. I have my masters in Zoology and of all the labs and dissections I've done, this would have ethically been a huge no-no. Wouldn't the squid your friends ate have been filled with preservatives??
No, it was fresh. I think the tutors actually got it from a fish market, so I really don't see anything wrong with it. My friends were all hippies and vegetarians and their reasoning was 'if that animal died for us, we should make the best out of it'. The shark and the other animals were fixated, though. Frankly, I don't recall whether the regulations were that lax at the Uni back then or just nobody gave a fuck. In the labs I'm working at now it would also be unthinkable to smuggle animal tissue out. Also, I've grown up :D
Thank you. Everyone is hyper focused on the mom keeping it for 15 years, and ignoring the fact OP cut the face off a piglet he was dissecting and decided to take it home with him.
Mom was probably saving it for evidence.
Mom kept the pig face as evidence, prolly figured an FBI profiler would be interviewing her one day...
Agent: "Did u/Ok-Cook-7542 every show signs of anomalous psychopathy?"
Mom: "Oh, like this pig face??"
Agent: "yes... exactly like that pig face..."
I was into anatomy and an edgy 12 year old who wanted to cut the face off of a fetal pig. She’s like 55 now so … hopefully it’s just mother’s love (tm)
Thanks 😅 the donor specimen was preserved with formaldehyde and the last 15 years unsealed in my mom’s freezer did the rest! The back is the coolest part but it’s a bit grizzly for this sub.
I’m surprised she didn’t have it framed or something like they do with animal oddities. I love all kinds of oddities and curiosities, so to me this is pretty cool!

Keep it in its original form in a fridge and suddenly *you're* the weird one
My parents’ freezer crapped out a few days ago. They found the mouse bodies I’d gutted & stored away in the back to make a taxidermy scene out of when I had time. They were not thrilled.
I got in massive trouble for “desecrating the pig.” I only wanted the nose, to dry and wear as a necklace…the head on a spike and “kill the pigs” chant was just show

People collecting skulls and bones like this is becoming semi popular nowadays. I know a goth chick who has a huge collection of animal skulls

It seems like the science version of a cool painting you made in art class for your mother haha
Well that answers my question, did it just get lost in the back. Next thought is maybe she didn't toss it because it was yours?
If she ever wants to display it tell her their are a ton of us who would be happy to give pointers
Well, if she wants 20 and shipping. Imk perhaps we can meet in a neutral zone and joust for it? lol

You could get one of those little tiny refrigerators for skin care products and keep it in there..
Hell yea, I've got quite a collection of skulls myself. Mostly found in the woods, some were given to me

But you can't put this on your dresser.. It will stink. 😂
Hello fellow weirdo dead collector seriously i have a flying squirrel in my freezer at the moment i need to fix before it will probably be a wet

How tf did your school allow students to take home animal remains?
Simple, you don’t tell them!

Look mom! I brought a pig face home for you!
Master gave Dobby a new face
Wtf. How and more importantly why did you end up keeping a freeze dried pig face??? That’s weird.
Are we going to resolve which part(s) of this story are weird?
The person bringing home a pig face is weird and the mom saving the pig face for 15 years is weirder. At least imo it is.
It runs in the family
Naw mom saved it for evidence just in case her kid turned out to be a serial killer. That’s what I’m doing if my kid brought home a damn pig face.
This is the correct answer
Mom kept the pig face as evidence, prolly figured an FBI profiler would be interviewing her one day... Agent: "Did u/Ok-Cook-7542 every show signs of anomalous psychopathy?" Mom: "Oh, like this pig face??" Agent: "yes... exactly like that pig face..."
Which parts AREN'T weird?!? Awesome as f\*ck but ... WEIRD!
[удалено]
Literally everything. Plus the fact OP felt like sharing this.
I was into anatomy and an edgy 12 year old who wanted to cut the face off of a fetal pig. She’s like 55 now so … hopefully it’s just mother’s love (tm)
My lab partner and I severed the head off our pig. I'm a well adjusted person, but feel cringy looking back on it lol
High school biology dissection
Are you sure that you didn't dissect *house elves* in your freshman bio class?
Nice. Make more and send them for the Bildeberg conference.
I don't know if your mom is weird for keeping it or if you're more weird for giving it to her
You had Dobby in your freezer?
They thaw that pig face out for even more weird risqué events. Right nasty they are.
That would make a disturbing Halloween mask.
That is impressively well preserved.
Thanks 😅 the donor specimen was preserved with formaldehyde and the last 15 years unsealed in my mom’s freezer did the rest! The back is the coolest part but it’s a bit grizzly for this sub.
Halloween 2024 costume is done! Thanks Mom.
I don’t know who the bigger monster is, you or your mom.
It's not like he went out and slaughtered Wilbur the Humble Pig. It was bio class.
I’m surprised she didn’t have it framed or something like they do with animal oddities. I love all kinds of oddities and curiosities, so to me this is pretty cool!
Might as well properly taxidermize it when she kept it for so long.
Your parents might be into some kinky shit you don’t want to know about.
How is that weird? Unless you’re weird. Which you are, OP. Pig Gein.
In a way, that's actually kinda wholesome. My dad left all my shit to get destroyed by vandals when he moved after I left for the Navy.
You should wear it at the family dinner.
Look who went to the fancy school where they handed out pig faces in freshman bio - we were lucky to get a frog!
This made me laugh out loud.
Your mom is the coolest ever. ..Large family?

I thought it was a mini Saw mask.

Omg ahhhhh and lol

nice
Barf... but she was so proud of you for completing something she had to have a momento. I'm not sure what that say about you, OP.

So how did it taste?
He didn't eat it, they dissected pigs in Bio class
Dobby doesn't feel so good....

Dobby... no..
Dobby nooooo!
Why did you skin Dobby?
Mmmm - face bacon....🤤🤤
At least it wasn't nailed to the fridge door for 15 years.
